The voice of the WWE, Michael Cole, stops by After O&A Live with Sam Roberts to talk about Jerry Lawler's heart attack, feeding him tater tots, his Wrestlemania match, heat he's gotten, and a lot more.
For more on Sam Roberts check out notsam.com & @notsam on twitter.
"Jerry had a heart attack live on television and turned me into a babyface overnight" lol
+KalvinEllis lol have to laugh, because he was feuding with him at the time...
+KalvinEllis More like "Jerry had a heart attack live on television and saved the WWE because the annoying as hell Heel Cole ended, making the show watchable again." Am I right?
cheezeofages
More or less.
cheezeofages I'm the only one who liked Michael coles heel run. Trust me I'm not proud.
Lol I read your tweet as soon as you said that.
He announced SmackDown in it's best years.
him and tazz the best
One of the best team announcers ever 2002 to 2006 :-( time just gets away from us
yup man it sucks
No doubt
@@TheSmedina27 "WILL YOU STOP"
If you grew up and watched the WWF/WWE during the Attitude Era, you have to respect this guy. He, along with Jerry The King Lawler and Jim Ross fucking kicked ass. I didn't have cable for many years, but I incessantly watched Smackdown and some of the best moments I remember were with him behind the announce table. Michael Cole fucking rocks.
What people don't realise is the pressure he is under during the 3 hours. Vince/producers barking in his headset constantly and informing him of the next segments while he is calling action and plugging stuff for 3 hours is no easy job.
If commentators weren't fed lines constantly maybe they'd sound better. The WWE commentary team sounds so fake because they're saying what someone wants them to say instead of giving their own reaction. If they were allowed to do their own commentary they wouldn't sound so bad.
Yeah... same goes for the wrestlers too. As Cole said, it is very much "a business" now, so people aren't allowed to do their own thing anymore :(
It's always been that way. You see them feeding lines from Gorilla in Beyond the Mat.
Be that as it may, they're more micromanaged than they've ever been in the past. Rather than being fed specific lines, they seem very strictly dictated in terms of what they have to promote and what they can/can't say. It robs a lot of drama from certain big matches, to be honest.
David Hadley I think they should do something similar to Mike Goldberg of the UFC. He has notes of sponsors, stats, facts, specific things related to the fight. They should have highlights of when a certain move is made say x, but have improvised parts where they genuinely give an opinion as if they didn't know the outcome of the match. If that makes any sense
***** JBL is the one tied directly into Vince, actually. So anytime he says something offensive, there's a 75 percent chance it was Vince lol
i dont care, but michael cole is the voice of smackdown growing up for me.
It is nice to hear Cole admit what a disgrace his match with Lawler was.
PanzerblitzRnR His honesty was refreshing, he even mentioned how they didn't give Daniel Bryan more time in his match too.
It's a classic to me priceless funny
I know Cole is no JR and never will be. But am I the only person who actually thinks Cole's announcing isn't as bad as people make it out to be or hell I think Cole does a pretty good job. Why people hate him because he isn't J.R. is ridiculous
He's a good announcer!! I like him a lot!! He's really funny :) Greets From Hungary!!!
He needs to turn heel.
No, there's a reason why the brought in JBL
True. Fire Jerry Lawler then !
JR is legend, but when Cole and Tazz are together, they're the LORDS!
Honestly, I think Michael Cole gets a lot of undeserved hate. He really is a good announcer. He's no JR, not even close, but he's good. People are still talking crap about Cole like it's 1999-2000 and he just got called in to do commentary in JR's place. It's 2013! Get over it. He's been in WWE for nearly two decades and he STILL get crapped on. Whether you like it or not, Cole's the top announcer now. I am a JR guy, but I've accepted it. Others need to do the same.
He's not good. He's a professional but his announcing is sometimes simply moronic and reduces the quality of the product heavily. Present day Lawler sucks too. Look at how their announcing was before JBL came in to save them.
Hermit Stargazer SAVE them?! JBL has no business behind an announce table. He was terrible in 2006-07 and he's bad now. Cole and King are carrying him.
Oh wow. If you think that then we have no common ground to argue on. JBL is a great colour commentator. King is carrying him? Seriously? Cole does the announcing and JBL the color commentary. So their jobs are different and there's no possibility of one carrying the other. But King... I don't know why he still has his job. He simply seems uninterested in the matches and never has anything to say except ridiculous jokes. Face King and face Cole were the worst commentary team before JBL came in and that commentary team was a big contribution to the bad quality of the product. JBL is the most entertaining commentator and he puts over nearly everyone.
HardcorePuckhead LMAO.
It's now 2018 and.... yeah...
Cole is great on commentary. The hate is undeserving
The hate was part of his old gimmick, the only hate he gets now is from JBL, try watching wrestling and then commenting
Luc Fox He for some reason likes to get into arguments with JBL while JBL tries to call the match down the middle
beyond, only play by play commentator with enough charisma to go heel. would of never worked with JR
Psychotracuer Are you being sarcastic? Because JBL is brutal in his love for ALL the Heel wrestlers. Always agrees with their dirty tactics, and talks them up to be the best.
I thought he sucked in 1999 and I still do today. Even when it became cool to "hate" him I wasn't going to join the hipsters and start liking him. The whole Raw booth is terrible at times, really. Even JBL who I was happy to see back has been brutally annoying with his "UH OH! UH OH!" before every big move. I'm not going to give credit to Cole for being the only heel play-by-play guy. All his did was prove that it doesn't work and his same bit of lame fat jokes and super cheap heat made me turn off the TV more than anything else I can think of in recent memory.
Michael is like alan from 2 and a half men
Hasel I KNOW. How the fuck has nobody else realised this!!!!!!!!!!
"I've covered wars, you know." Maggle West
Frank...
@Paul Bell You know it
John Cena can not turn heel , does so much amazing charity work, will happen later on like kind of how Hogan's career was (With Wrestling) lol
they said the same thing about Hulk Hogan
Sure he could, He didn't want to because of the children
It's nice to see Cole taking the negative bullshit into a positive thing. He laughs it off when people hate on him... I respect Cole & not only that, he's one of the few guys from the Attitude era.
Cole has that fuck it mode, whatever they say about me fuck em. I'm not losing sleep on them fuckas.
I had no idea Cole covered the wars before wwf/wwe. Learn something new everyday.
@@jameslightsey1761 he was commentating one of the biggest moments during the Monday Night Wars, aka Mankind winning the WWF Title and the proof that Michael Cole isn't bad, he's just being fed lines that suck
I'm no fan of Michael Cole....but this is a great interview - way better than i expected anyway. I think he should do more of these, the man barely holds back...just a good, no bs interview.
16+ years in the wwf/e....the stories he must have would be priceless.
He just hit year no.25 this year. Cole's a legend, man.
@@SamuelDuplessis12hope they’re a fan of cole now
Sam you have one of the greatest jobs in the world
JBL and Cole are actually pretty entertaining together.
Michael Cole is actually a very good commentator. Heel or face.
As a heel I can't stand Cole.
But outside of his character Cole seems like a really cool and nice guy.
+Rob Weck LOL no he's not.
+Rob Weck agreed dude, if you listen to some of his early attitude era stuff, its like night and day. best example: the Raw Mankind beats the Rock for the WWF championship
+eljono1 He's good but shouts the same thing to many times "OH MY!"
😂😂 Please tell me you are kidding
Look, people need to understand that Cole probably has Vince yelling in his ear telling him what to say on commentary
I'm not a fan of his commentary on WWE , at all, but I enjoy and will enjoy listening to the man himself outside of WWE. I'm starting to come around to the realization that it's not him I dislike, it's how he's produced/presented.
JR is a legend i admit that, but at the moment Michael cole is the greatest commentator. He is the reason that the main events become so anticipating, he is taking on Jim Ross's role in the PG era and without Michael Cole WWE will go even more down the drain
Michael Cole doesn't get enough credit for his work in WWE. 21 years he has been there. He rarely took days off. And he handled the Lawler heart attack brilliantly.
I would have loved to have seen Takers face when he seen Cole in his singlet lmao
"What has this business come too" 😂😂😂
Cole gives whatever lines VKM gives him. It's not his fault that he doesn't have the charisma to pull off some of the things they've had him do. I don't understand why Joey Styles is put in a room with a computer hidden from the world, but both sides seem happy with that arrangement. We all have to live with the fact that Gordon Solie, Bob Caudill, Lance Russell and Jim Ross type sport based announcers are gone and never coming back.
He seems like a pretty decent guy.
he is lol they're normal people outside the shit company standards
michael cole is such a chill dude
No one interviews WWE Superstars like Sam. He knows his shit, knows what he's talking about and has a passion for wrestling. I love his interviews.
I think Cole is so underrated
When he would start that he was a war correspondent, knowing nothing of his background, I always thought he was referring to the Monday night wars. 😂😂😂
I really like Michael. He played a brilliant heel, his play-by-play is fantastic and he's a really good guy behind the character we used to see. The hate for him only comes from idiots who think he's still 2011 Cole and people who mock him for mentioning sponsors.
Cole is good at his job. It's not his fault they give him completely awful scripts.
will love cole now he is so much fun here he could have been defencive here but he is making so many jokes that he comes across like a really nice down to earth guy
Wow, I never thought WWE employees were allowed to go to such shows and openly talk about "heels", "faces" etc. This was interesting. I actually like him alot as an announcer, don't get all that hate towards him.
Kayfabe has been dead and buried for quite a while now, so there's little point in dancing around the scripted nature of the business these days.
The internet has killed kayfabe.
Vince mcmahon voice: "michael cole! ..... SHUT UP!!!!"
I don't think Vince would ever put Jerry back in the ring... if you remember he was freaked out by the possibility of Ax of Demolition having a heart attack in the ring because of some health issues that came up with him. Then Crush came along and he got phased out.
The problem with Cole's commentary is the micromanagement, in JR's interview he stated that him and King were given more freedom, partly due their experience and probably because there wasn't as much to advertise, these days everyone is just so scripted and railed that it's hard to get anything genuine from them, when Cole commentated the UK tourney, he felt more natural and gave a great performance, I'd say him and Nigel made a better duo than Nigel with JR, as JR hasn't really been in the swing of things on commentary (Due to the tragic passing of his wife) So I feel they should rotate between Cole and JR until JR gets his full mojo back
I got to admit when Cole isn't stumbling on his words he's actually funny to listen too
I love the interviews that separate the person from their characters. Gives you a glimpse of who they really are
He has made WWE more money than any other performer in history. Your feelings towards him do not reflect his status. He is a legend because he has been the face of WWE for 8 years.
Sam gets the best wrestling guests of anybody. Really enjoy his stuff.
People, me included, may hate Cole on commentary most of the time but as a person he's one of the most likeable ithink
Fast forward to 2017 and Sam is a returning guest at PPVs, it's awesome!
I hate & cringe at Cole on commentary these days, but Cole seems like a great guy & I like his earlier work from when he was on Smackdown with Tazz. If only WWE would let him say what he wants instead of scripts of bs.
Michael Cole is better commentator now
Cole is a great guy, so many marks around that hate him just because of his heel character.
I know JR is a legend but I feel cole does a good job at commentary. I don't understand the hate he gets.
It's the people and vince on his earpiece that force him to say certain things. Otherwise he is a good commentator.
michael cole was someone my crew hated, but we ended up liking and respecting his work. he got better over time.
+mufflerstien Your crew? lol
mufflerstien MY CREW..............................DUN KNOW YA GET.
“What has this business come to?” - Undertaker
King was the best when he was a heel commentary.
Does anyone know where we can see the episode of WWE Off the Air that Michael Cole is talking about at 15:04?
Came here from the podcast!
I love Cole. Doesn't take himself too seriously like a champ!
8:58 jerry lawler heart attack
good interview. but a think brad Maddox is genius on the mic he plays his character well
Really enjoyed this, as well as your other vids. Subbed for more.
you don't understand what i am saying. I am saying that at the moment in the pg era out of the king jr , jbl and Michael cole Michael cole is by far the best. Yes jim ross is a legend. plain and simple
Cole is awesome
no way Michael cole is the reason that wwe becomes exciting, his enthusiasm
I wasn't talking about that comment to the one when he said that John Cena is the greates WWE Champions of all time he is one of them but he was saying that Cena is better then Bruno Sammartino Hulk Hogan who helped put the wwe on the map Undertaker The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin who helped save the wwe in ratings from WCW who was whooping they ass for 82 weeks
301 views... good job Sam. More views than all of Sirius...
Why did he get hate? Hes great and doing hes job very good!
I love him!
RedCowCat Because everyone thought he was inferior to Jim Ross. Which he is ... but MC is without a doubt still a great announcer. I loved him and Tazz together. They MADE Smackdown.
@@LewisMarien ok but i dont agree michael is better
he is a nice guy
22:15 - three years on and Cole is still having to spin the same spiel about mixed reactions for Reigns now. Or maybe he just lets JBL handle it now.
Cole is still the voice of WWE!! 🎤
yeh i see but jbl and jerry are quiet and are like the backup commentators when somebody does a good manouver for example however Michael Cole is the main commentator who talks throughout the whole entire match and advertisers wwe
Cole is a great commentator he makes the wwe great along with jbl great team
ive always found cole funny to see.He is a great commentator and funny guy.
@juliful it was the segment when Brad Maddox came out and forgot his lines so everyone was rambling
doesn't matter how he looks like, he's a great interviewer and not bad looking at all
Excellent interview
For as shit as he is on commentary (because he’s told to talk a certain way by the higher ups), Cole is a really good commentator and deserves a ton of praise for his work. If he didn’t have Vince scripting his every word and making him scream all these shit catch phrases like “ThE BiG DoG!” and “BoSs TiMe!”, he would be seen in much higher regards by the fans. As far as this interview goes, he is very well spoken and seems like a great ambassador for the company.
no that is for a promo not for the commentary, the commentary is unplanned and they come up with it on the spot because they have no idea what the wrestlers are going to do and there maybe someone on the headset giving them helpful "suggestions"
Does anyone know what segment Cole and Roberts were talking about Chris Jericho and Michael Cole
Michael has changed over the years. he use to be a douche. but he has became a very respectable human being
Cole is in ridiculous shape rn.
He seems like an awesome dude!
Okay so I know you guys remember Jerry The King Lawler having a heart attack on Raw in Montreal but is there anybody at all remember them using that events as part of their storyline
Trying to listen to heel Cole was the worst years of WWE I ever had the misfortune to watch. yeah he was basically just doing what King did in the 90's but at least King could pull it off, all Cole did was act like a gutless coward. Not to forget he basically BURIED Bryan, Punk & ESPECIALLY Zack Ryder after their TLC wins
he did the exact opposite to burying them.
I'd have to disagree with you. He pulled that character off, and really put the heels over. ESPECIALLY The Miz. When he turned face it was a very dark time in commentary. We had two face commentators burying heels and pushing Cena to Mars. (Which didn't help much since all the heels where booked as cowards)
No. Heel Cole was great. He just had really shitty Face commentators to work with, that could never keep up with him or challenge him. Plus, play-by-play guys should NEVER be the Heel.
I always thought it was weird that announcers look at their monitors when the action is in their faces. But I guess because when they are in the opposite direction you can't see it. Now when Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross were moved by the entrance way which they had to hate I got why they looked at monitors. It was Eric Bishoff idea to put them back there because in WCW the announce tables were away from Ringside. They kept it like that for many years. I hated it but at least I didn't confuse the Raw and Smackdown and later ECW announcers. But I heard Jim Ross say he hated it. Don't know about Jerry Lawler. I guess it had good with the bad Jim Ross said. The only thing good about it he said was you were not right next to the fans. So you felt safer Because you never know when you will get a crazy fan. But you had a different problem. Pyros. When people came out and it is not time it would sometimes scare the hell out of you. Especially Kane or Booker T or Undertaker or Chris Jericho who all had the explosions. And the Dudley's I forgot he said too. So you never knew when an explosion would go off and they would sometimes slightly hit us. So as much as we loved those characters we were glad to get their entrances over.
cole a cool calm guy..i always like cole when he started the wwf
Michael cole should do more interviews with sam roberts on this show
I grew up with tazz and Cole always liked Cole back then
Man Cole is funny when he's not commentating
for as much shit that he gets, he seems like a genuinely stand up guy.
I want to see cena on your show!
Michael Cole is a great a commentator.
“We know where he’s going” 😂😂😂
To you, probably not. To WWE and their fans (mostly the children), it matters A LOT.
I wish he could be himself on wwe tv
Entertaining interview thank you
Cole is cool guy :)
maybe i'm being too sensitive cause Jerry wouldn't be, but when they started poking jokes about Jerry's heart attack, that was really uncomfortable :(
great to see cole talk out of his wrestling caracter
I love Michael Cole and just about any broadcast partner except JBL. JBL's heel commentary is a little too heavy handed sometimes.
hes the best and you cant change that and thats why he is competing for the tittle everytime
I've always suspected that Cole is a cool guy, and is just paid to be a twat on television. Another great interview, Sam. Always love your wrestling stuff.
the thing about cena is, they dont have to turn him heel. they just need to do something interesting with him. add some depth to his character instead of him being the guy that makes lame jokes that nobody gets and constantly overcomes the odds. he's just not fun to watch and that's why the majority of people that boo him dont like him. ive just given up on wwe doing anything remotely interesting. ive finally realized that im not the target demo for wwe.
See cole is a normal guy i think its funny how people cant see the difference between real and character
Actually when he was in the hospital the food didn't look the healthiest when he did an interview. Even I was like why is he eating like that. He is definitely braver than me. If I was in the same situation I don't know if I would be the same. At least not for awhile. He was smiling acting like nothing happened weeks later in that interview. I Wish I could be that calm. All joking aside God must of been watching over him that night. Others who were in the back said he died for awhile. They were EMP's so I am sure they would know.
Sam should have asked Cole how'd he felt about the whole 'hendenrich' segment experience. lmao I couldn't believe WWE put him through that.
Idk why but I like his voice 😂
