The National Grid has to transmit huge amounts of power to supply the whole of the UK and P=IV so ideally we would need a high current and a high voltage to generate the power needed. However, when high currents flow through wires, they generate lots of heat (because of the resistance in the wire) reducing the efficiency. To stop this from happening, we need to keep the current really low, meaning that to generate enough power, the voltage needs to be really high. The step-up transformer increases the voltage before the power is sent to people's homes, increasing the efficiency.
