    Interesting read.
Btw, one of this women's "makeup" is beet which women rub their cheek to make them reddish. They also used ash and chalk or flour to paint their eyes and whiten their faces. Many poisons paints been applied like antimony, cinnabar, lead salts and other. Makeup been applyed in the most crude and gauding way you could imagine.
It puzzled not only foreigners for which you can read Anthony Jenkinson, Samuel Collins, Giles Fletcher and others, but locas too.

Very interesting to hear. Really like that stuff. Maybe you should make a playlist with audiobooks here on YT. I'm sure many will like and listen to it. I'm half Russian, and never heard of something like that. I know how old Russian folk dressed(some) but what they did. I don't know. And my parents don't either, can't blame them, they lived in Soviet Russia, there was no room for own thought or real history.

Interesting stuff, I love old travelogues. But what does this have to do with the Talmud? I was expecting some juicy stuff, but didn’t see any references to the Talmud or Jews so far.

@@peterc.4143 Watch the whole series. There is a playlist. In one video I present Jews and magic, in another I present community organization under the Talmud, presided over by the Nasi. Then I present these. I say this is an example of Talmudic slavery based on what the Jewish Encyclopedia says about magic and the structure of Jewish communities.

@ ok but just to be clear, the system being described in this book is Russian feudalism, whereby Christian Russian peasants/serfs are feudally enslaved to the Christian Russian Boyar landed gentry class, right? So I don’t initially see the connection. Also, the French guy is describing his travels in Tobolsk, Russia, which is in Siberia, where there were few if any Jews at the time of the writing of this book (1790). Jews in Russia were restricted to the Pale of Settlement in the extreme West of the Russian Empire until 1861 when Tsar Alexander II lifted the settlement restrictions on Jews (as well as emancipated the serfs in the same year). All this is to say the area that the travelogue is reporting from probably had very little Jewish influence at this time. But I’ll watch the other videos in the series to see if I can make the connection.

This is off-topic for this vid, but it's getting creepy how much in common our past are.
Even down to the name of the woman who performed rituals to do me harm.. same name, but it has to be a coincidence, right?
A question.. is ebay your main source for old books? Have you had luck with estate sales?

    • @nerfytheclown

The estate sale companies unload older books to businesses that deal with that and you nearly never see them at the sales.

A leather scourge used for flogging.
A kind of whip for flogging criminals, formerly much used in Russia. The lash is a tapering bundle of leather thongs twisted with wire and hardened, so that it mangles the flesh.
