I want to offer some balance here. I agree with Min Theophilus except when it comes to music ministers.
The only expense for most other categories of ministers, other than time spent in training, is the freely given gift of the Holy Spirit which they carry. For the preacher/teacher, the additional expense would be the time invested in preparing a sermon.
For the music minister, it is not so. There is a serious financial outlay for producing music that people will be able to stomach, let alone be inspired by to worship God. It doesn't just take the singer's skill. That singer might also need to hire a music producer, music engineer and instrumentalists. You may add to that a publicist/promotional agent who will help their work gain virality on the internet. I don't want to add the cost of promoting on mainstream media cos that will be a whole different treatise. If that singer then decides to sign a record deal, then they owe their record label money automatically and as result must angle their careers in such a way that it becomes profitable for the record label and for themselves. At this point, the matter has become more complex than "I will wait for and accept whatever the people decide to honour me with."
Minister Theophilus had a unique path to limelight. It looks like he found visibility (perhaps through his close association and travels with Apostle Arome Osayi) before he was ever compelled to go into the studio to actually record a song. The likes of Pastor Nathaniel Bassey and Minister Dunsin Oyekan were also very accomplished musicians and songwriters with access to a lot of the tools of the trade. They did not need to sign record deals that "imprisoned" their souls to make music. They were already very equipped to make high quality worship music and had access to large platforms by virtue of their works as pastor/music coordinator in big churches. Add to that the fact that all these men already had highly developed walks with God, to the point where all of them heard God expressly command them never to charge for ministering. I deeply admire and respect them, but they are outliers.
I believe that every music minister should aspire to this depth with God as much as possible because the music ministry is a unique office that is essential to "conduct" the manifest presence of God into a gathering of believers. I however would encourage that more grace be extended to those who cannot afford to start from the same privileged positions as these men I mentioned. Let music ministers charge to cover their expenses and to keep themselves out of the red with their record labels if they choose to.
Instead of putting them all in a category and judging them all equally, I think the church should take up the responsibility to fund the music ministers from within their congregations early. If you notice a member of your choir who seems especially gifted in music and seems to have a special grace for saturating an atmosphere with God's presence when they lead worship, take that person as a project and fund them till they can stand on their own. It is my belief that every church should own, at least, a small recording studio to help such people so that they don't struggle needlessly or become forced to accept contracts from businessmen music executives who have no fear of God and have no business being gatekeepers of worship music. The House Of Salem is an example of a ministry that prioritizes music. It is not necessary for every church to copy their exact style, but every church should emulate their commitment to worship music produced within the fold.
If this happens, those who charge extreme amounts to minister without justification will fizzle out naturally and those whose purity hasn't been corrupted by greed will rise to the top.
    PS.
I am a music producer who at some point had to sell studio equipment to survive, so I understand the creative and economic costs of making music. I am in the process of creating a Christian music label that will produce ministers who do not charge, but I'm still working the details out with God.
