The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Anyone born in the 50s , were the luckiest people on earth. Our generation got to experience the finest of everything
1952 girl here! I agree!
I was born in 1947. The early 60’s music was the best imho.
Yes! Yes! Yes! 1958 😊 ❤❤❤
Or 40 ties
1955 😁
I love this song. And im still listening to it in 2024
some of the best music to grow up with from the 60s
ME TOO❤
YES !!!!!
YES !!! always !! rwee
how we use to dance !!
Me, too - 3 years after I posted some "background info" about this live performance.
I don’t care if I’m stuck in the old days.
Me either..that was when music was great
Me too. Best music, fashion and able to do our own thing! 😎
Nothing wrong with that. I'm right there with you.
Me too...stuck there that was great music
we all are and i love it !!!
Being a teenager in the 1960's was a special & unique thing.
Absolutely right. Pity my children could not see what we had in those times. Perfect. So lucky I was around at that time
Absolutely
said very well and a fact others will never know
I listened to all these songs on my little transistor radio. I stayed up many a night late, listening to music.
And the severnties ❤
Boy that Gary Puckett could sing the hell out of a song. Smooth as velvet.
Yes !! His Own !!
@@mitchmartin2659 Johnny Rivers!

When music was music
And they had clothes on.
When we were teenagers we thought music would always be this good. We were so wrong.
We lived in the best of times.
it was good music
Our generation had the best music….🎼🎼🎼❤️
How were you wrong? And try to answer without sounding even more like a blinkered, prejudiced, rose-tinted snob than you already do
😂. We really could not have imagined that we were experiencing the epitome of greatly talented musicians 🎶🎵🎶🤞🏻💪🏻🙏🏻👍🏻
I'm willing to bet that less than half of today's entertainers could sing this song with this much emotion and power without passing out or needing a break. That guy had lungs.
true that !!
You're so right ! But he could sing to me my husband sang it to me 54 years ago. Still does !
Amazingly, I get the sense that there was more in reserve if he needed it, but Gary wisely held back a little, so as not to over power the song.
He's amazing, never get tired of listening to it, wished I could see him live
@@blockcl Absolutely spot on correct! Those pipes combined with his pulmonary volume were a gift from god to us all. I've always thought that, IMHO , he had the best voice in rock/pop. I still do.
Have you ever noticed that when you hear certain singers it takes you back to the first time you heard their voices. Memories run down my face remembering friends no longer here and the good times that were had
Fantastic memories
Your absolutely right
The list goes on and on....
This is some of the best music of all time .
Hi Caroline hope you are fine
Hi Caroline how are you?
I’m fine how about you ?
How are you Morris ?
Hello Morris how are you ?
Could listen to Gary Puckett and Karen Carpenter All day, The 2 best voices ever.
Completely agree
Agree….
Gary Puckett and The Union Gap should be in the Hall of Fame. Fantastic voice , great musians and singers also.
The best band for 60's / 70's nostalgia.
As a black boy from an predominantly soul music listening environment I became a solid fan of Gary Puckett and The Union Gap at 8 years old in 1973 and still a fan.
I am very surprised they don't have their booking in the music HoF because their music stood a test of time and for a person growing up in the 70's for that moment they place me in a much better more innocent USA.....
They are crap! I was asked to watch this. Without the big band behind them. They would sound like a rough pub band! Seriously😂
NO ONE today can even come close to his sound and talent- forget it! :P!!!
If they're not in the hall of fame it's their loss--not Gary's. Just shows that the hall of fame isn't cracked up to be what it's supposed to be.
@@brucknerian9664 Unfortunately it goes to show u it is politics & who u know just like everything else.

No lie, he is one of the greatest singers and he melts my heart.🥰
Am 63 luv this guy 💖🦋🌹
I agree, brings back being a teenager in the 60's. Great times
same here do you remember listen to them on 4 track car tape player
I heard him often when a senior at Illinois State University in 68-69. I went east to college from Dan Diego where Gary and the "Gap" played at my high schools senior prom.
I still get chills listening to this classic. Memories of a much more innocent childhood.
@@twowaditty8325Same!! I cried when I started listening to these songs again. It’s bittersweet. His voice is amazing! I had a big crush on Gary. ❤
I'm 61 but I grew up listening to him with my Mom. It was a way different time I know that now. I still cannot understand HOW WE ENDED UP WHERE THIS COUNTRY IS.
SMH
Yes!
not quite so "innocent" when you really listen to the lyric. Not really.
@@jimquantic Neither was Lou Christie!
In a period of time when there were dozens and dozens of great singers, Gary Puckett still has to be at or near, the very top of them all.
I played this 45 constantly as a young boy. Then I progressed to Steve Perry & Journey. Didn't realize how much they resembled each other tbh.
GARY PUCKETT REMINDS ME OF BILL MEDLEY''S VOICE A COUPLE OCTIVES HIGHER.
BOTH GREAT SINGERS.
❤❤❤ Gary Puckett ❤❤❤
Between Gary's fantastic voice and Jerry Fuller's beautiful songs ...I mean , come on ! ❤️❤️❤️
A song that touches the heart. Love their cloths and class act.
My husband sang this to me when we were dating. We wound up getting married. Our 37 th. Wedding Anniversary would have been the 16th, of this month. He died last year just before Christmas. This song brings back some sweet memories!

My sincere sympathy. You had so much more than most ever will have..tenderness endlessly.
So sorry for your loss. I know how it feels, I ost my Wife on Feb 19 th after 48 years. It’s devastating.
Perfection, is all I can say. No grandstanding or showing off. Today people scream as loud as they can and fake emotion to get the attention they crave. Gary Puckett was not a showoff ... he just knew what he had, and that was enough.
Great voice
Iv loved Gary since I was young, bought all his records, I still get goose bumps when I hear one of his songs....❤
He still does!
Without a doubt one of the most underrated Performers ever

Gary Puckett’s voice is pure gold! Now this is singing! So glad I grew up listening to music with talented singers!

Never again...golden age of music 🎶
My goodness, Gary so effortlessly belts out this one so perfectly knowing millions of people are at home watching his every move. The man is a living legend.
How do we know he's singing live? Seems like a recording to me. They did an awful lot of lip synching in those days.
@@landztranz In the performance right before this one, of "Young Girl", Ed asked Gary to change one of the lyrics of the song which he found suggestive, and Gary obliged, so it was a live performance.
Interesting. But how do you account for the fact that there are instruments that aren't there onstage, and also the microphone in front of the guitarists is far from them? Something's definitely not live.
@@landztranz - This comment thread was about his voice. Who cares if the instrumentation is live or not. Gary may not even have sewn his own clothes. Oh mercy! LOL
@@landztranz Sometimes, the lead singers would sing to recorded backing tracks, so the lead vocals would be live. I think it was done because live shows often had troubles micing each band member, as evidenced by some of the earlier appearances by bands on Ed Sullivan.
You can tell Gary has a great singing voice as this is no lip sync and his vocals are freakin' clean with less than studio quality everything, its impressive.
2022 still listening to this classic song.
This was recorded in mono just before the performance, as often happened on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Thus, it is a lip sync.
@@gmail4218 How can anyone "not" see that? 🤣

This guy has a amazing voice full of emotion not like todays songs
Hello Susan how are you?
God I miss the 60s and 70s music. Best ever.
Wow, I had a major crush on an older guy at 15 and he sent signals back. But….he sat me down to talk and basically spoke very similar words to “Young Girl”to me. I am forever grateful he did. But boy that song takes me right back to that place and time. Thanks for the memories Gary. God bless you
I'm 68 and when I was 65 I met a woman who was 30. She and I were close, but friends. Her mom was my age. But I remember the emotions I felt that took me to my youth. I was so happy to be her friend. That was enough. Just beautiful! I'm happy for your experience.
One of the greatest ever. You won't hear todays music being played 60 years from now.
You definitely won't hear today's music, which is far from music being played 60 years from now.
Or six years from now.
There are bbn if any classics being created today. Old school music brings back pleasant memories. Today's music nightmares and sadness
I'd be happy to not hear today's "music" today.
I can't remember today's music now let alone 60 year time.
Reminds me of when I was 17 and my boyfriend was 21 can’t forget the feelings that were running through my body how I loved this young man and we have been married 52 years now soon to be 53
Wow man. This is actually live! Puckett was the best in the business, hands down. No one could compare during this stretch, it's almost ridiculous, he was so frigging good.
YES the best, also youtube at its greatest
All performers on the Ed Sullivan show were live ..no lip syncing allowed.
@@Luke-PlanesTrainsDogsnCars Wow, I didn't know that, thanks. Ed always cleaned it up "the way of life"." He might actually sound better live than he did on the studio track!
@@jacquelinemcgowan8164 Yep
@@jacquelinemcgowan8164 He hung on too long, but when he was at his peak I don't think anyone could hang with him. Tom Jones, Humperdinck were great, Johnny Maestro, Burton Cummings maybe. But Puckett was probably the best.
Just listen to that complete, intense, on pitch, harmony background vocal arrangement through the verses and chorus...an amazing performance, recording, mix and production. Totally unique for the era. And Puckett's range, power and tone? No one could touch it...

One of the best vocalists of 60s pop
Pop in general ☺️
In 1968 when this song came out the Ed Sullivan Show was the premiere television show to be on but Mr. Sullivan was also known as a stickler for family friendly so anything suggestive was frowned upon. He asked that Gary Sing different words deemed too suggestive so "the facts of life" was turned into "the way of life" and Gary gladly obliged because he knew he and the Union Gaps performance would be watched by millions and millions of people and this became one of their biggest hits peaking at #2 on the charts!!
Gary's vocals are unbelievable for a live performance and I doubt there are many that could sing as he does today!!!
Such a powerful voice. Love his music.
What makes Gary such a awesome singer is the way he sings with his heart into the song. He emotionally sings and his expressions really shows his feelings when singing. A GREAT SINGER NO DOUBT !! I GIVE HIM A 10+
As Judy Garland said, sing it like you mean it.
Totally agree!!❣️
1,000% AGREE. Great Singer. He should be in the R&R Hall of Fame.
I thought they used autotune on all his tracks...and used someone else to hit the highest notes during live concert?

The sixties saw three major political assassinations, a deadly foreign war where over 60,000 Americans lost their lives, riots that have never been matched to this day, a civil rights movement unequalled in human history, massive political dissension, college students killed for peacefully protesting the Vietnam war, and out of all of this some of the best music ever recorded.
