  • None of the 8-Bit versions of SoC were using actual emulated NES soundchips. This video fixes that. The arrangement of the notes is very emphatically not my own. You can find it's author here: • Soul of Cinder - Dark ...
Regarding the graphics, also not my work. They were posted on a forum without attribution: if you know the source, could you comment so I can link to it? Thanks!

Q - "Download links do not work! What do?"
A - Leave a comment on this video telling me! I'll fix it. If I don't respond, I am also availibile on Reddit - send a PM to /u/cyaed.
Q - "Which format for the win?"
A - FLAC. Highest quality, lossless codec, best dog. OGG and MP3 are about equal - they are smaller, they may sound very slightly worse on sufficiently hi-fi equipment because they are lossy. The quality on each was maxed, so they should have equivalent sound. Use OGG if you like open source free software; use MP3 if you like IP law.

This makes me think back to Boktai on GBA, because of the older hardware music and darker feel. Something else in there, too, I had in mind but can't seem to remember. Lost it shortly after I thought of it.
EDIT: Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring on GBA. That's what it kinda made me think of.

Actually, if you don't mind, what is going on here? I'm really happy people are enjoying this thing - it's the best possible reward for the time I took tinkering with emulated nes soundchips and things - but don't understand what's driving its apparently newfound visibility. By the way, thank you for listening!

I did, though. And then I couldn't find it, but I did find Max's 16bit chiptune version, which led me to UprisingGrand, who published the underlying note data. I knew just enough about LMMS (a music composition program) to bring that note structure in, tweak it verrrry slightly, pump it through emulated NES chips, and then do a bit to master the output and give it some pop to make it sound like a real recording instead of just digital waveforms being pumped through your speakers (a tiny bit of reverb does wonders for making chiptune music have that pop - I learned that trick from, of all things, the official OST for the gen 1 pokemon games).
But yep. Did search, couldn't find, but by grace, luck, and good people sharing their skills, I could make this. The internet is so freaking cool! Imagine how much stuff like this just wouldn't exist if not for some DARPA geeks in the ninteen seventies!!!

There are a lot of options. Most faithful would be using multiple different famitracker modules to voice. Most user friendly would be LMMS. But if you allow multiple famicom voices (needed for the polyphony we have here, ultimately it doesn't super matter. Famitracker is only necessary if you want to compose inside the contraint of a single nes instrument vs as an orchestra. This peice is a nes orchestra.
