The Saturn, PS1 and N64 all had a distinct feel to them, personality and even their libraries follow this line of thought. To me, neither of these feel like old machines, they feel great and have a lot to offer. Sometimes I see current games and it's amazing that what we wanted during the 90's was 'real' visuals, that's what FMV games tried to do as well, and now we have almost photorealistic capable hardware, the charm of what video game graphics/visuals is a lost art. But then again, this was written on the wall. Yes, I do enjoy many new games, but as far as video games visuals and sound goes, the charm of true custom hardware isn't forced, it's just how they are. I hope you do a similar homage to the upcoming PS1 30th anniversary as well.
@@KingStr0ngwhat's messed up I remember where I was when I saw on the news the Dreamcast was being discontinued just as clearly as where I was when 9/11 happened.
@KingStr0ng Sega was something special but they made some key mistakes with their marketing and timing. The dreamcast arrived too late onto the scene and was lacking by not having a dvd drive. It's sad we don't have Sega around anymore
Love the Saturn. I owned one when they were essentially giving them away in shops before the Dreamcast released. But when I went to Japan in 2016 and bought a number of Saturn games it rekindled my love for it. And now that I have a Saroo I play the Saturn almost every weekend. I absolutely love it.
I'll never forget it, 1995 I got the Saturn for a whopping $399 also along with the Virtua Stick that I believe costed $79.99. Couldn't afford to get extra games but that was alright because it came packaged with the original 1st Virtua Fighter. I believe that's also the only US Saturn title that's packaged like the standard Japanese jewel cases. I remember it also coming with a demo cd that showed the first Panzer Dragoon, Clockwork Knight and I believe Bug and my mind was blown looking at these new next generation graphics at the time. I still have that very same Saturn along with the packed in VF to this day. SEGA Saturn will forever be my favorite system of all time.
The CPI inflation calculator is telling me that $400 in January 1995 had the same buying power as $840 in October 2024. Do you feel that’s correct or is it off from what you remember? I was born in 1996. Any response is appreciated, thanks
@@KC-kp4vhOnce you add the tax in plus with the arcade stick you might as well say $500 total for everything and yes I feel that's correct. Fortunately for me at the time I had enough to splurge on new a console that I couldn't wait to get my hands on. I played Virtua Fighter all night that day.
$399 felt very expensive and out of reach in 1995. I was a kid, so I wasn't even thinking about Saturn as a realistic acquisition. However, the Dreamcast released for $199 in 1999. It was an incredibly affordable price point and the games were numerous and amazing! I was blown away by how well Sega launched the Dreamcast! The Saturn launch and that whole Saturn era in the U.S. was abysmal. But for the people who could get both Saturn and Playstation, they are very lucky.
I used to flip through Sega magazines at the time and dream about a Saturn (too expensive for me). And then almost convinced myself the 32x was good enough to the fill the gap... knowing that wasn't true. Ended up waiting and waiting until the N64. Probably because when I had the Genesis, I pined for the SNES games instead. Then while I had fun on the N64, I pined for the Sega/Playstation catalogue. Then I got the Dreamcast and PS2. It's really a pity that the Saturn and Dreamcast didn't fully reach their potential, or should I say the perception of them meant many gamers missed out. But those early days of 3D, staring at screenshots of VF and dreaming about a CD based console was a magical time.
I used to think nothing of the Saturn when I was a kid, even though I really wanted one back in the late 90’s. My journey began in 2016 when I visited a Stone Age Gamer store and grabbed a model 2. Since then I’ve become obsessed with the console. Everything else collects dust. The Saturn is such a magical and mysterious gaming system. I’ll never sell my Saturn collection. SLX makes me feel like I have a subscription to Saturn Magazine. Thank you so much Mel. Here’s to another 10 years. 🥳
The Saturn, PSX, N64, Dreamcast and PS2 era was really a golden age of innovation, charm and creativity, from the first early steps with true 3D gaming in the home, to decent arcade conversions, to 3D becoming the de facto way games are played. Everything since (hardware and software) feels iterative, and many of those titles created in that era still remain all time classics. I don't understand why no one is making a "new" updated Saturn/Dreamcast console with an updated version of the games for HD already.
This video made me cry. Im not even kidding. I had so much of the games on this list. And I loved every single one of them. One day my parents decided to move houses and my console simply vanished. They had been going through financial dificulties and I think they sold everything without telling me. I miss my saturn so much. My parents never told me the truth.
My dad got me the Saturn when it came out and I missed it for so long I bought another one in a used game store many years later. Lately I’ve had a thing for the capcom fighters on it
I was 15 when the Saturn was released. I still pull out some of my Saturn games to play on an emulator from time to time. My 14 year old saw me playing Burning rangers and was intrigued. I told him it plays better on the original hardware. Before you know it, I was committing to him to set up my old Sega Saturn and an old CRT monitor so we could play virtua Cop together! I'm glad I could share this wonderful system with him. And I'm glad I still have all my old games and peripherals!
LOVE the Sega Saturn. I have 3 and still play the system. The shooters, the Fighters, the Sega titles and games like Saturn Bomberman. A great staple in gaming history that was under appreciated.
Back then I was renting the Saturn quite often and was generally shocked at its discontinuation I thought most games for the Saturn were great and we cannot really blame the hardware and its capability's more the management of programming and advertising it was a sad goodbye to that system and I had no choice but go the Sony route thanks Sega Lord X for all your hard work producing awesome content
I ADORE this episode of the show. Saturn was a pretty big chunk of my experience as a gamer, and I'm always hungry for new coverage of the system. Congratulations! What a well-chosen subject.
As a gamer of the 90's, i originally grew up with PS1, however, during those days, i managed to get my hands on a Saturn, and as they say, the rest is history. I currently have 2, one Japanese and one North American one. Going full swing soon for a full NTSC Library of games for it.
I'm surprised that Astal hasn't been remastered for modern platforms. I agree that it's a beautiful game that holds up extremely well. It deserved more.
I got a Saturn because the guy at the game store stopped me from buying a PlayStation. I had a stack of capcom fighting games and he set me straight. I loved the system (picked up a PS1 finally when Resident Evil 2 came out)
Sega should do something grand for the Saturn birthday! Maybe a modern collection of Saturn games for modern systems. I would love to play Panzer Dragoon Saga without paying $1,100.
30 years… I don’t think I’ve felt this old in a while…. I remember playing a demo for the first time in a sears where they had Panzer Dragoon. I picked PlayStation at the time, but later on I purchased one for $100 from a coworker at electronics boutique with about 20 games and some accessories.
I have a modified Saturn I purchased from E Bay, which has a Fenrir Duo ODE. Has a lot of games in there I loved when I was younger, still the best system ever made in my opinion.
As a young Sega fan back in the day, I was furious I couldn't get the Saturn at launch. This won't be a popular statement, among Sega apologists and revisionists, but so be it. I love Lord X's videos, it's good enough for me.
Hapyy birthday to my 2nd favorite console the sega saturn behind the dreamcast. Damn shame the saturn never had a chance in the west and pal region after the suprise launch. Also, took advangtage of the 5th gen video game software boom of the late 90s from the ps1 and n64.

The sega saturn is still my favorite sega console. I really thought is was gonna beat the OG playstation when it came out. Much love to the ps1, but I still prefer the Saturn
I have to say xbox market place has been releasing saturn tribute games. Wolfang/ skullfang just a week ago and assault suit 2 earlier in the year. And more from last couple years, witch as been the only way I can play them.
I got mine for christmas (1995). I only had a couple of games. Some of them were Duke Nukem 3D, Fighters Megamix, Mighty Hits, Deep Fear, Kaio Flying Squadron 2.. just naming a few.
I wish the Saturn Shinobi let you sprint like Shinobi 3. Lots of people like the walking pace like Shinobi 1 and 2, but the sprint slash got me into Shinobi 3.
Sega Saturn with Netlink and keyboard plus mouse adapter and games like Warcraft II and Command and Conquer made it feel, in a brief little window around 1997 to early 1999 like a cheap little computer to get online with.
When it came out in Australia I would have just left School at 16 and I can never recall ever seeing in a store. I am not sure I just miss remember or it just had a small release here.
I'm looking forward to the Dreamcast anniversaries. Jedi Power Battles, Tony Hawk 2, Virtua Fighter 3, Spiderman, Super Runabout, Trickstyle, Rainbow Six.. we were just out of luck if we wanted an EA Sports game.
I’ve recently been considering getting a Saturn myself. Would a Saturn all in one Cartridge (With Psudo Kai) be good for that? In case I import games or get a Japanese Saturn
