I am a die hard fan of voices of music, and to be honest I came here for Tanya Tomkins... Cynthia is brilliant and I love her perfomances... but Tanya is always playing so hard and passionately and for me she is the backbone in several videos of VM... Merry Christmas from Mexico City. Namaste.
Schubert's largest body of works is his songs, which he wrote from a young age. This is how he developed his incredible lyrical quality, his beautiful melodies, and the directness of the drama so prevalent in his music.
I love everything about this performance. The pianoforte has such a massive sound! And the tempo is precise, yet it drives the whole piece in a new direction. I listened to four other "majors" playing this piece and this one is hands down the best, making those other performances sound lazy by comparison. The players here are all on point, playing with fire and verve. Schubert would approve and I think this is what he had in mind when he composed the piece!
Okay, after 5 years, I became a part-time piano technician, and was lucky to do small repairs and tuning for a 1876 Blüthner today. Used this piece as the final test, and it sounds exactly the same with that overdamped bird-cage piano action and straight strings!
Thank you for sharing your story. Last year I discovered historical performance and since then I have become really passionate about it. Sometimes I feel alone sometimes because nobody in my school orchestra knows or cares about historical performance. This video reassures me that there are other young people like me out there.
My beloved Schubert's piece, always will be connected for me with "Barry Lyndon". Stunning performance, I especially love how delicately Mr. Zivian plays fortepiano part in first half. So subtle.
I watch your performances all the time, when im studying or when im at my bed. Im a beginner at violin. It was your Canon performance that got me hooked. I watch it multiple times everyday without fail. And I found all your performances equally beautiful.
This is fascinating and beautifully played and of course the piece is gorgeous. I love the sound of period instruments in general but am still trying to educate myself about the sound of the fortepiano. To my unschooled ear it sounds clink-y. I always imagine that the composer would have loved to get his hands on a modern piano if given the opportunity. But, who can ever really know that?
It's an interesting question, I suppose it would be similar in a way as to whether a modern composer would prefer a piano or a computerized sampling keyboard.
Gloriously beautiful and definitively performed. Pity the description doesn’t include more about the period piano that is being played. Zivian will always do this in live performance. Not having that undermines the very reason that Valley of the Moon Music Festival exists, to promote performances of late Classic and Romantic music on historically accurate period instruments..... ESPECIALLY the pianos!
probably the closest rendering to how it actually sounded back then, when the piece was composed and actually performed for privileged people. brilliant idea not to use a modern piano for this performance!
This piece is under-watched by the public. Once you here it you’ll come back over and over for it’s perfection.
Oui c'est UN classic...tres interaissant...mais il NE faut pas oublier Jc Bach mozart et Vivaldie Des quatres putain de saisons..
Cynthia Freivogel is so lovely. The music she makes, even more lovely.
me too
I would say Cynthia is AS lovely as her music .. & the music is quite exquisite! 😄👍
I love Cynthia Freivogel. What a woman so elegant and distinguished

Schubert's chamber music is one of the most fantastic works of classical music

Thank you very much!
So nice to have this movement on line with my favorite musicians. Wonderful, wonderful, and yet again wonderful!
Thanks, David!
Just magnificent, Ms. Freivogel. BRAVA!
Many thanks! Beautiful synergy among the players....
My two year old was captivated for the entire performance. I think that's some kind of measure of success.
My dear friend Freivogel is really one of the most interesting baroque violinists we have today.
Agree!
Look up Freivogel playing Vivaldi’s “Winter” from the Four Seasons masterpiece. No one does it better. Stunning!!
Truly surprising no one has commented on out-of-this-world sound (in a good sense!) of the piano! The bass at 4:15 and 7:58 is absolutely phenomenal!
Okay, after 5 years, I became a part-time piano technician, and was lucky to do small repairs and tuning for a 1876 Blüthner today. Used this piece as the final test, and it sounds exactly the same with that overdamped bird-cage piano action and straight strings!
This trio is a splendid accomplishment by Schubert and played superbly here, about as good as it can get. Bravo!
Thanks so much!
Such a wonderful performance! This piano is so perfect for Schubert; what a great sweetness of tone.
Neither the hardest rock band could lift my senses like this trio interpretation
great Masters,
The wavy interplay between the piano, cello and the violin is fascinating.
I keep watching this again and again. :-) So beautiful.

Beautiful work on one of my favorite works for cello. i love Tanya Tomkins playing - usually she plays a baroque cello

the song is an entity, a conscious being in itself and it presents to us so well thru these instruments.
Can’t get enough Schubert. Sublime

Extraordinară muzică! Tristă, dar armonioasă; gravă

back then, their piano WERE modern.

I love the musicians of VOM!
¡WOW, ME ENCANTÓ!
Oh, Barry Lyndon! No wonder I recognize it! Perfect evocation of tragedy.
Kubrick had very good taste in music.
Woow ese piano , debe ser de la epoca de schubert.O sea que debe ser una reliquia de casi 200 años.
Oh what a treat! Are you not planning to make a Schubert album? Folks need that!
La música sale perfecta, porque los tres son excelentes. Una de mis preferidas.
Awesome
Perfection 👌
I LOVE IT, IT HELP ME TO STUDY
Me too
