Thank you for your question. I am a bit uninformed on the topic but this is my understanding. STOU THOMA or AT THOMAS’ is a revered song from the inspiring 1983 Costas Ferris movie REMBETIKO based on the life story of an expatriate Rembetika singer Marika Ninou. REMBETIKO of course is a form of “Greek Blues or Roots Music” which originated in the Greek diaspora of Asia Minor’s - Smyrna and Constantinople in Turkey in the early 20th century. With the Greek Turkish Population Exchange in 1922 between the Greeks in Asia Minor returning to Greece and the Muslims in Greece returning to Turkey, the Greek diaspora that settled in the ports of Piraeus, Volos and Tessaloniki in the main nurtured and fostered Rembetiko music. This regeneration particularly took place in the back streets of the refugee and working-class neighbourhoods of Piraeus Harbour and the abandoned fertilizer factory Lipasmata (lipasmatapark.gr/en/ - now turned into a park and a cultural music venue in summer with free concerts) in the Municipality of Keratsini-Drapetsona on the stunning ocean-front outskirts of Athens looking across to the seminal ancient 480 BC naval Battle of Salamis site. Definitely worth a visit to Lipasmata on a balmy summer evening while being hosted by some amazing and diverse Greek music of many complexions (lipasmatafestival.gr/events/). The famed and eminent composer and living legend, STAVROS XARHAKOS wrote the brilliant soundtrack to that movie which included this song. It has been covered many times. Perhaps the quintessential and arguably the best version is the final scene of the film at Marika’s funeral - ruclips.net/video/IBuHk2lTd6o/видео.html&ab_channel=MikeKapsalis. Stou Thoma was also sung at the 2004 Athens Olympics by the revered singer Georgios Dalaras ruclips.net/video/WOhgnbGEydY/видео.html&ab_channel=PANApao13. Other brilliant and admired songs from the film include MANA MOU HELLAS the incredibly emotional song and scene of Marika’s murder ruclips.net/video/k8nLLqMibc8/видео.html&ab_channel=sarperka. Again, this was also sung at the 2004 Athens Olympics by Georgios Dalaras and equally revered Haris Alexiou ruclips.net/video/NXj8pPx94ls/видео.html&ab_channel=AlexFV. Another cherished song from the 1983 film is TO DIXTY or THE NET ruclips.net/video/4H4_jMH5cPE/видео.html&ab_channel=8eodwros. Hope this helps. Enjoy immensely.
