    1. Nerds create hobby that is fun and interesting. They establish rules that keep the hobby as good as it is.
    2. More nerds join in and follow the rules. Hobby experiences its golden age.
    3. Newcomer nerds advertise the hobby to their normie friends. Normies enjoy the hobby but don't care as much.
    4. Demographics shift and there are more and more normies enjoying the hobby. They attract even more casual audience.
    5. Casuals find the hobby fun but demand it to be dumbed down and rules to be relaxed so they can enjoy it.
    6. Corporates take interest in the hobby and approach nerds. Corporates bribe nerds and take control of the hobby.
    7. Corporates dumb down and deregulate the hobby to increase mass appeal. Normies and casuals outnumber nerds.
    8. Hobby is no longer recognizable. Many nerds leave in disgust. The audience becomes more and more casual.
    9. The creative spark of the hobby dies. It becomes corporate and sterile. Normies lose interest and leave.
    10. Hobby slowly dies. Casuals leave because everyone else leaves.
    11. Nerds look for ways to create something new.
    12. Repeat.

In one of my college business classes, we were shown a video of some dude dancing by himself until more and more people joined.
At first, it was just a few extra randos jumping in with everyone doing their own thing independently, but next to each other. Eventually, enough people joined and they were able to form a sort of group dance dynamic that was clearly fun for them. After that, a swarm of normies descended upon them and began doing the most generic "pretending to wave a lighter in the air" move collectively, and the spirit of the dance was gone completely.
It was a brief showcase of how most people are basically sheep waiting for the rest of the herd to lead them into the next set of lowest-common-denominator, safe, sanitized "fun" within the scope of what is socially acceptable. None of the guys at the beginning were particularly good at dancing, but at least they were genuine.

This is true for any medium. Games, comics, tabletop RPG, certain movie genres should have remained "underground." I hated when said things began to gain more and more popularity as I saw the writing on the wall.
Gatekeeping exists for damn good reason. Ptolemy, well done again. I also agree the some type of gatekeep and something that cannot be subverted is immensely needed. I just have no idea how one could ever succeed in making a product that could forever follow that. this is why gatekeeping is good. internet was better off without normies. now its nothing but corporations and political shills, all the fun of the internet has gone away.

Interesting you spoke on the subject of Gatekeeping. TFM last night talked about this on his stream on why hobbies, shows and movie are going woke. He brought up the Asch Conformity experiment on basic how the powers that be used gaslighting to change the perspective of the group to make it hard for dissenters to point out what’s wrong and a particular hobby or genre? We see this irl with what Lucasfilm and Disney Star Wars. TFM pointed out that the alphabet agencies believed that young men were being radicalized by certain games, movies and TV shows. So the intention was basically to make all these properties woke to pacify the potentiality of aggressive men in the culture. So basically no property of film, games or genres are not safe from this tactic. His solution was simply this, If some goes WOKE, Don’t buy that new stuff. Don’t engage with woke crap in your media. Interesting theory, which is certainly possible however I feel like if true then agencies are even more stupid then I gave them credit for because what I have noticed both in myself and other men irl around me is that as our distractions get killed off and there are less ways to distract us we are instead turning more and more agressive and dissatisfied. I've definitely been seeing a correlation between an increase in violence paired with the increase in wokeness. So instead of pacifying men I've noticed more men acting out. Joining gangs, causing riots etc. As well as other unsavory things I rather not even type out as my comment would get deleted by YT for sure haha. Almost all men nowadays are also fanatical gym goers who do at least a combat sport or two. So basically if pacifying men was their plan then at least locally it has horribly backfired.

I think that anime is broad enough that there will always be sections of it which are _highly_ mainstream (usually Shonen adaptations like Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, etc.), while others are relatively niche, such as mecha, obscure 80s/90s OVAs, cyberpunk, etc. As with most entertainment, the majority of the really good stuff is from 20~30 years ago (at least, that's what I seek out).

You can gatekeep locations but you can never gatekeep an idea.
I remember when youtubers couldn't make money off their videos. I remember when the floodgates opened in 2011 and suddenly a lot of previous youtube viewers started to make videos once they realised they could make a sustainable living from it. And then i remember the next generation of creators who saw people get rich & famous off youtube started to make videos to take their shot at getting rich and famous rather than being genuine fans of the medium. At that point I have to accept that the mainstream site culture no longer catered to the original audience.
There isn't really a solid answer to this other than to never let yourself get too emotionally invested in ideas that you don't control. Maybe consider creating the content that you wish to create in your designed medium. It's not a perfect solution but the less reliant you are on a world that doesn't care about you the better.

Sadly it's true, I see comments on a certain website all the time when some hobby goes bad and people say "should have gatekept harder". But there really is no way to do that. All it takes is one video to go viral or one company to make something tailored to the masses and it's over. You are never getting your comfy hobby back. I've seen it happen multiple times growing up, watching things I love turn into things I hate. Because the new "fans" don't actually care about what you loved, it's just the temporary thing they use as an excuse to hang out. They will move on as soon as there is a next thing to plunder. But sometimes it takes so long before they move on that the original thing is all but lost and forgotten.

Here in my area, we never had that cliquey sort of funnel of people into certain hobbies. We didn't habe jocks, nerds, whatever other ridiculous stereotype other places had. People just didn't what they enjoyed. Farmers sons liked world of war craft. My brothers now a civil engineer and did very well in magic the gathering, yet he also loved combat sambo, out door survival, etc. Heck, at the magic the gathering meet up comic book shop, which was located in downtown gang territory, some of the locals from those clu s got into magic the gathering. The owner couldn't really tell them no. Some of them apparantly invested a very large amount of money into the hobby, which I'm sure the owner also enjoyed being that he sold the cards aswell. I know many guys that enjoy hunting and quacking, that to this day still sit down and read a green lantern graphic novel in the evening. Iv goke to comicons however, and habe gone with my brother to his magic the gathering tournaments in other locations. Yes, it seems that for some reason, our oasis is a bit different, and you don't see any fellow guys that do combat sports.

I used to enjoy gamedev and programming. Used to. It went mainstream sometime in 2018-2019 and now you look at gamedev forums and its either dudes talking about how to properly market their game or a ton of un answered questions because the wizards of back in the day have all realized that these people dont care about the hobby anymore. You used to actually have to be smart and put thought into your creations and do research but once it went mainstream normies started making bite sized content and reduced game developement to another hobby that anyone could do.
State of the hobby now? Complete lack of community and no one really cares about the art of any of it anymore. People now sell asset packs instead of making informative write ups / tutorials like back in the day (they did it because of actual passion). Engine producers are now scrambling to find ways to monetize their engines even further and if you actually make anything interesting youll have one hell of a time trying to sell it because everyone is trying it now.
I swear normies only purpose in the world are to make things worse so that real people have to overcome trials to prove themselves to God

The only gate you can keep is where your attention and money go. Even with that, taxes and the need to work for a living prevent you from possessing absolute power over you money and attention.
Your goal in life is to devote as much attention to your interests as possible while keeping other's interests from impeding upon your own. I chose a job that interests me for a living. It also pays pretty well.
Taxes. In CA I was an independent contractor and could deduct my significant business costs. CA changed its laws so now I can't take those deductions anymore. I'm in the process of figuring out my exit strategy while working remotely.
This is gatekeeping 101 -- keeping other's interests from side-tracking yours.
I don't play any video games so I had nothing in that domain for them to take from me. Hollywood has destroyed the movie industry so I no longer buy their product.

This new generation of "comic book geeks" doesn't know anything beyond what happened in the Disney movies and shows and have never even been anywhere near an actual comic book.

Which Spider-Man villain joined Silver Sable's Wild Pack?

What false identity did Matt Murdock use in the '90s when he had faked his own death?
Which super hero team did Night Thrasher use as the inspiration for his New Warriors?
Who replaced Batman when he broke his back?
You don't know, because you never did any of the the actual work and just watched some movies and shows, yet you dare call yourself a fan?
Well, cosplaying as an Avenger or Harley Quinn and buying some Funko Pops does not make you a comic book fan.

I realize the following is a controversial point but one could argue that "grifting" began with comic books way back in the late 1970s - early 1980s when they began to serve as a form of softcore pornography for teenagers who were either too young or ashamed to purchase mainstream adult content like Playboy magazines, a development largely driven by the creative output of writers and artists who often drew from their own experiences with sexual frustration and self-inserted themselves into the stories they created. Of course, they also realized that "sex sells" - as the saying goes - and they had bills to pay like everyone else.

You know, ever since I was little, I've had this odd behavior where I've never been into anything that becomes too popular for some reason. I always thought this behavior of mine was a odd back in the day.... like if there is something I like, and it becomes super popular, I generally lose interest. For example, I never liked World of Warcraft, but I've always been a DnD fan. It's become clear to me that I just have a natural instinct to avoid all the poser-normies and their completely fake attention seeking, ego centric, version of reality that just ends up being a whole bunch of white noise to someone like myself who's very much only interested in objective reality and not some fake "me centric" reality that all the normies live in. These people are a disease on my mental capacity to think and reason clearly... which obviously translates to my instinct to lose interest in anything that becomes too popular. I need these people as far away from me as I can so I can think about things that matter and not think about things that don't matter. MGTOW has the distinct advantage here, since it will never be mainstream as normies will never understand these advance concepts, or even if they do, they will never agree with them and will always reject MGTOW out of hand because of it. Thus MGTOW will live forever as a place for intellectual conversations and debates, which is one more reason MGTOW is great!

    • @JohnnyThund3r
      @JohnnyThund3r Месяц назад

You know, taking this concept one step further, MGTOW really is my people, and this is my home, because we are talking about stuff that actually matters here. The media portrays us all as losers who just hate woman, and maybe the Media is doing us a favor actully "Yeah were all sad losers who hate woman and are gay, now FUCK OFF!" is what we should be telling every normie we see. Sadly these human parasites will probably smell our raw intelligence and start invading our spaces to pretend they are anywhere near as clever as we are. Me must guard against their invasions.

You need the normies for the hobby to breach obscurity. It becomes worthwhile for companies to produce accesories and items to play the hobby. Innovation occurs. There is enough interest you can book events and convention, having famous and key people attend. Once it grows too large, it needs more people to grow and you start pandering the the lowest common denominator. Then yeah, it's gone.

The only way to fix this is to change IP laws things shoulfmd go public domain the minute the creator dies and IP should not be sellable so no corpiration can have exclusivity over it absent a temporary license from the author.

I wanted to be hopeful and deny this for a while, but it's true, I always knew in the back of my mind that no matter how aggressive are the repsonses they get, nothing will change for the better until they get and remain in positions of power in companies. I already see the cracks im the Godzilla Fandom thanks the the American Monsterverse movies, and especially because of the Monarch show.

collecting vinyl. In the past eight years....when women deemed collecting records was now cool.............said vinyl geeks, music lovers now have to "be nice" and teach them and the like and women then have the nerve to say "female artists" are not represented enough in the stores. Not enough "female owned" record shops. The usal griping they do when they enter any area.

I used to follow marvel comics religiously in early 2000's. I was a big nerd for DeadPool I knew if others knew I would have got wrecked. It's weird seeing people running around with tattoos of marvel characters now.

I believe comics, video games, and rpgs became normalized due to the demasculation of society. People used to call such things "girl-repellant", now most guys are so invisible to women why would they even care?

i would also like to note you cant gatekeep what you dont own many of these hobby's many of these franchises are not owned by the fans despite what the fans think they are most often own by the IP holder, corporations and individuals and are at the mercy of such if they desire to burn it down or change it to something thats no long recognizable they can do that and there is nothing the fans can do, as i said you cant gatekeep something that doesn't belong to you or you dont own and thats a bitter pill fans are going to have to swallow.
