Is the "squish zone" a shelf so the piston physically can't hit the spark plug?

as far as im aware all the squish is is the clearance between the top of the head and the piston at tdc

Nup. If the piston hits the squish zone you have big problem. The squish zone is meant to direct the fuel/air mix to the middle to ignite
