Thank you for the video. I use a line counter reel for when the fish are suspended. Great Lakes fish generally look up while feeding, so you don't want to be below the level of where the fish are located. I start jigging above the level of the fish and gradually work down until I find them. Which can be above or slightly below the thermocline; usually within about a 10 foot range. Fish will come up to feed, especially when aggressive, so use that first fish as a starting point for the best depth range. Keep an eye on your electronics for bait fish and structure. The Great Lakes are massive, so location is crucial. Especially when jigging, because you are not covering as much water as when trolling with multiple rods at various depths. But, jigging can keep you over fish for much longer once you've found them. Remember to punch in way points when you get hit. A controlled drift between way points is good for those days when wind is a factor. Drift socks help to slow you and I usually go with a heavier jig under these conditions. The same 1 to 2 ounce sizes work under most conditions. Check to make sure your line counter is accurate, especially after a fish. Simply zero out the counter on the surface before your drop.
I never liked my cardiff 400 LH since day one when it bound tight and I lost 80yds braid and a $13 spoon. After several lockups and no help from Shimano I decided to machine and tap the casing to prevent this which has taken care of the issue. Vert jigging is one thing, but if you go into the bays for pike you may eventually experience it. Great video!
Just a headed up bro from a lefty, right handed people use left hand retrieve reels and lefties use right hand so you are using the correct reel for your hand dominance, nice fish man
Good info, you make jigging in 100+ FOW look like a breeze! I know from trying to jig walleye in 40 foot that it's not the easiest thing to do. Throw in any kind of wind and now the work begins. Nice vid!
Those are diamond jigs I believe. We use them in the salt quite a bit. Especially in the fall on the beaches with a trailer usually of a fly that will mimic a sand eel. Striped Bass live them.
Nice video, appreciate the tips. One question: didn't see a BB swivel tied in there, do you recommend using one?...say 30# suffix 832, 20# flouro leader? +theconsumatesportsman
I just can’t understand how people find these places to fish, all my life I try to find places like this to have a good time and get some salmon. I myself can’t just pick up and drive my boat 5 hours away and go on water not knowing what the hell will hit me, or maybe just get skunk with no fish, I’m always trying to learn but idk I guess you have to meet the right person, no one wants to tell you what city or kind were to go fish, Bc everyone thinks the OWN the lake, and they don’t want ppl fishing there sport, they don’t have to say there dam exact sport, but it’s good sports when ppl help, if your a good fisher men then you will always find a good new spot to fish right? obviously I’m not such a great fisher men, but ya it’s kinda messed up, anyways This right here is one of my most favorite videos I watched, I just love the look of it, jigging deep water salmon, no big waves, it’s really a great video.
Spend a few bucks in a good tackle shop and they will put you on fish to get you back spending more money in their store. I learn a lot talking to the tackle shop owners.
You'd have some fun at Salmon River / Pulaski NY during the Salmon Run in the fall. Wading not boating. I usually go up for a week each year. You should hook up to a monster there.
The reason is you'll tell your buddy he'll tell his buddy and two years later this guy will have a day off and go to fish there and there's ten boats there. Any lake trout lake has jiggable trout. Study the water and lake trout behavior and you'll catch more fish. We have 20+ fish a day on lake Ontario and I wouldn't say a peep. It takes years to learn a body of water so don't be surprised when they don't tell you. Good luck
Are you running braid straight to your snap hook? I can't tell if you're using a few feet of fluoro/mono for a lead, or just using braid. Jigging for deep lakers is my second favorite type of fishing... after trolling for shallow lakers!
The Consummate Sportsman cool, I assume you're using an Albright to connect your braid and fluoro. What do you use to connect your fluoro to your lure?
Quick question, why wouldn't you put your bow mount in the water so you can see your jig and the fish, kind of like Ice fishing? And wouldn't moving around a little with the bow mount help? Thanks, John
Good question! My bow mount is a piece of junk, that doesn't have a transducer, nor does it steer. I plan to replace it with an iPilot system over the winter.
Do you have to cut the barbs off of your hooks when you fish lake trout? I've always gone up in North Western Wyoming and we always had to cut the barbs off and we always noticed we would lose more fish than normal
Iv been trolling on Lake Michigan for about ten years now and in the last two years or so are average has been about 4 now with lake trout I know u can only catch two but do you catch them right away or is it like trolling where on bad days you go hours without bites? By the way I really liked this video great job!
Nice video! I'm with you on the left handed baitcasters. I've switched all but two of my baitcasters to LH. Only a matter of time until I replace the last two. I'm a Lund fan, as well. I have a '93 ProV Tournament 1775 with a 70 HP Yamaha tiller. But, I'm a little wary of taking it too far off shore on Superior or Michigan. I'm heading to Milwaukee to fish the harbor in the next week or two. I'm going to have to try vertical jigging spoons, after watching your video. What model and make of camera do you use?
Hey there! I've done a lot of saltwater fishing and a lot of freshwater bass fishing but never fished for trout. Crazy I know. Anyway I'm going to be going to a lake next week that has landlocked salmon and brook trout in it. The lake is about 50-60 feet deep. Do you think jigging will work on brook trout? I'm sure they'll be deep because the water is warm now.
brook trout dont usally dive deep , they are shoreline fish. go very early in the morning and fish around rock areas and any entering streams or brooks
it's the fish changing it's air batter because they are coming up from 118 feet so the water pressure and stuff is a lot different then in 2 feet of water so it's them changing it
JB, Another great video. I would like to say it has been awhile since I have seen a video from you, however that would be far from the truth. So we have been in the process of moving to Missouri, and while the movers were at the house packing my son Jackson watched the Steelhead Fiesta video at least 400 times. He will watch the introduction and the part at tippy dam when you say Fiesta and F@@@@%%% within a few moments of each other. I don't know what it is but he is a huge Consumate Sportsman fan. In fact were are in Tennessee staying at my inlaws and doing some fishing. Every time he catches a fish I hear Fiesta from the back of the boat, thanks JB I think you have ruined him. Steve
I've come back to this video often since you first put it out. You got me hooked on laker jigging. Thanks.
Thank you for the video. I use a line counter reel for when the fish are suspended. as a canuck to the north you have the best american fishing show and hunting on you tube aye your friends from the north
Thank you, brother!
Nice work. Excellent job on the channel.

Jigging is defiantly the most exciting way to fish too. You always gotta be ready.
Looks like West Traverse Bay.. am I right? If so theres some great laker fishing in there.
Excellent tips and techniques on jigging! Nice black lab as well.
Good info, you make jigging in 100+ FOW look like a breeze! I know from trying to jig walleye in 40 foot that it's not the easiest thing to do. Throw in any kind of wind and now the work begins. Nice vid!
Love these videos love learning new tips and tricks
Those are diamond jigs I believe. We use them in the salt quite a bit. Especially in the fall on the beaches with a trailer usually of a fly that will mimic a sand eel. Striped Bass live them.
is this traverse city?
Great video dude, I thought it could be done, just never seen anybody do it. Hopefully, I can do this on Lake Ontario.....cheers
what rod and reel combo are you using?
very impressive ! I like to use left handed bait casters myself and used lil cleo glow in the dark spoons but never tried jigging spoons
Nice video, appreciate the tips. One question: didn't see a BB swivel tied in there, do you recommend using one?...say 30# suffix 832, 20# flouro leader? +theconsumatesportsman
+J Lee I don't use a swivel, no. Just braid to an albright knot, to floro leader. Line twist has never been an issue this way.
very informative, great video . going to try these techniques and see how it works for me
My dad just moved pretty close to the Milwaukee Harbor. I'm hoping to be able to try that once or twice now!
It's a riot! Going to try ice fishing for those huge browns too?
Hopefully! I'll have to check the ice conditions for when I go down there for Christmas.
Do you catch salmon the same way you were catching lakers? ive caught a bunch of lakers doing this but never got a salmon jigging in open water
could you use an ice combo with braide for jigging in 30-50 feet of water?
Yam hell yes u can
that looks like power island. is this grand traverse bay
what lake was that? great video btw
Ok thank you again great video definitely the best out there
Great video! Are lakers good to eat?
I just can’t understand how people find these places to fish, all my life I try to find places like this to have a good time and get some salmon. Areu Foreal ya that’s a good idea, I like that
Lots of guys would rather see the sport die out than share a little info
You'd have some fun at Salmon River / Pulaski NY during the Salmon Run in the fall. Wading not boating. I usually go up for a week each year. You should hook up to a monster there.

You are a good sport my dude
I love my lefty baitcasters too!!
Where have all your videos gone? Can’t find the borax one and others. Do tell, I miss them
Hey guys, another top video, nice trout, well done and much regards from the boys down under.
wow man thanks for this video resale changer my approach for hunting deep water beauties with out down rigging
Awesome vids bud!
I'm a huge fan of the show and looking for a new boat. I like the layout of yours! What kind of model do you have?
Thanks
Beautiful patterns on your lake trout. Love it!
Whats you goto jigging spoon? I live on Lake Champlain and want to figure out this fishery, great video thanks!
Depends on species, but you can't go wrong with Swedish Pimples!
Are you running braid straight to your snap hook? I can't tell if you're using a few feet of fluoro/mono for a lead, or just using braid. Jigging for deep lakers is my second favorite type of fishing... after trolling for shallow lakers!
+Addison Bell I run a 4' flouro leader.
The Consummate Sportsman cool, I assume you're using an Albright to connect your braid and fluoro. What do you use to connect your fluoro to your lure?
What size and weight jigs do you use for what depth?
NICE!! I'll be in Frankfort next month!!
Thanks for the tips... good video.
Hi....Are you running a leader to your Braid?..Thanks.
If you use a line counter reel you can target suspended fish pretty easily.
Makes sense man! I-pilot is awesome, that's what I want/need!
XTheBassAssassinX Absolutely the best piece of equipment Ive ever bought, the I-pilot!
Do you use the same rod for the 2oz jigs?
What kind of rod is that? What kind of rod do you recommend for jigging for lakers?
Great video! I really like your Lund boat. What model and length?
+William Reed Thanks! It's a 1675 Explorer
Great video. i look forward to this year's vids
What pound test braided line do you use?
That lake is huge!
Grand Traverse Bay.....a little cove of Lake Michigan...lol
Do you have to cut the barbs off of your hooks when you fish lake trout? I've always gone up in North Western Wyoming and we always had to cut the barbs off and we always noticed we would lose more fish than normal
+Taylor Jesse not here, no.
I don't think you have to but it makes it easier to get the fish off the hook after you bring it in
Great vid! Are you anchored when jigging or floating along?
+BariAbruzzo Thanks! Floating. I like to move around a lot.
Iv been trolling on Lake Michigan for about ten years now and in the last two years or so are average has been about 4 now with lake trout I know u can only catch two but do you catch them right away or is it like trolling where on bad days you go hours without bites? By the way I really liked this video great job!
If they're "on" you'll get bit as soon as your jig gets to the bottom. It doesn't take long!
have you ever tried butterfly jigs?
Can't say that I have. Not sure if I'm familiar with those...?
www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-XPSFreestyle-Jig/product/90542/?cmCat
Those would take some hits!
Nice video! I'm with you on the left handed baitcasters. I've switched all but two of my baitcasters to LH. Only a matter of time until I replace the last two. I'm a Lund fan, as well. I'm heading to Milwaukee to fish the harbor in the next week or two. I'm going to have to try vertical jigging spoons, after watching your video. What model and make of camera do you use?
+Alan Case For this video, I used a couple old Gopros.
great video!
Is it hard to release coming from that deep that fast. They seemed to swim off good
Lakers burp themselves
How heavy of line do you run?
Saw your question about Brook Trout. I use Swedish Pimples for Brook Trout up here in northern Ontario.
Thanks! I have some Kastmaster's and some other random spoons. I'm going to give it a go next week.
brook trout dont usally dive deep , they are shoreline fish. go very early in the morning and fish around rock areas and any entering streams or brooks
Are you just drifting along no anchor or trolling motor?
Is that near Charlevoix?
what is a good reel for lake trout
Doesn't pulling fish out of those depths kill them if you just release them?
We got some Monster lake trout On the Niagara & Lake Ontario
Shouldn't you let the fish decompress when pulling them out of water that deep? Or is that just for catfish?
Nice fishing my friend ! ;)
what size is your boat?!!
Would like a fishing boat like yours, maybe for 4 people. How many feet is that LUND ?
Is that your favorite lake fishing boat ,,,, or ?
That's a 16.5'. Perfect for 3 people, do-able with 4. One day I'll get an 18 footer though. Lund is the only way to go in my opinion :)
The Consummate Sportsman
Right on, thanks for the great info.
Boat looks wide though. 84"?
"Found these on craigslist, don't even know what they are." classic!
+Lucas Patterson Hahaha. ;)
Lucas Patterson kkk
Braid floats... wouldn’t fluorocarbon be better to go deep?
What was that sound at 3:04
it's the fish changing it's air batter because they are coming up from 118 feet so the water pressure and stuff is a lot different then in 2 feet of water so it's them changing it
the lake trout makes those sounds when they come up/out of deep water.
Awesome
JB,

Steve
Hahaha! That is great to hear Steve. I'm glad Jackson enjoys the videos!! Have fun in Missouri. I hope you can get into some big deer down there!
Beatle jigs.
you bring them to the top to quick you have to burp them if you do that and they still will probably die
some fish yes but not lake trout, they will often chase a bait a 100' off bottom in 15 seconds, they have no problem burping
false
Yea not true I catch them all the time and have to deflate them or they float
I fish around the cement factory..
Flouro leader?
+Andy Burton Yessir.
There called Buzz Bombs.
I didnt see any buzz bombs. Buzz bombs are diamond shaped.
Dude ... use your ice flasher ... Red Lines man ... Red Lines .
what do u mean?
Jonah jigs?!?
Thats eating size..
good video but your missing a key component to this technique. im surprised you have'nt mentioned it as its the key ingredient to jigging.
+william nolan .....?
a
bruh
awesome video!
Nice fishing my friend ! ;)
