I like to think that Metal turned against Robotnik since his whole purpose was to kill Sonic, and with him gone, there's nothing left for Metal except serving his gluttonous creator as a personal bodyguard while Furnace does all the hunting and fun stuff, which we already know doesn't sit right with Metal. He has always been eager to do stuff, and with Robotnik being so cautious, he won't be able to do anything anymore. He realized that hunting Sonic was the only fun thing in his life, so he turned against Robotnik. Didn't fight him, but rather just left without any warning. If you go off the fan idea that Metal considers himself the real Sonic, that would just be another reason to leave Eggman.
The plot was that Starved set Metal up to search for Amy but couldn't find her (Furnace got her first) because Starved saw no use in Metal Sonic anymore so he sent Furnace to get rid of him.
Metal is even more Durable then such a Tin can as Furnace is. And further more, Metal sonic is FASTER than sonic in 2x times or more. Not only in speeds, but in reaction too. SEGA actually forgot about that, so metal sonic now is "lvl. 1" enemy in their games.
In my headcannon this takes place right as sonic is found by furnace and saves sonic: "defense systems activated" "Woah thanks metal head!" As sonic speeds off

I like to think it's related to that video where Amy rose helps metal sonic out of the snow since eggman abandoned him, but after he became starved, he got out of there, and wanted Amy out of there but didn't find her and now had to fight furnace, which could possibly be just from a older model, or a previous model of sonic since this once left
One problem: Starved takes place very early in the Sonic timeline, considering Eggman doesn’t even know about Knuckles. Sonic Mania adventures, the series in question couldn’t have happened yet as the starved story happens about the same time as Sonic CD

So anyways, furnace is chasing down Sonic and Metal intervenes, as he realises to beat both this universe and his own starved eggman, they have to band up and metal has most likely seen the future due to either the time stones or the help of silver, depending on what timeline this happens in, since this is my scenario i'd like to believe it happens sometime after sonic mania.

i came up with a take on starved where he eats iron: after the metal virus arc, a piece of the surviving virus gets on eggman, which does not infect him but poisons him, he began to thirst for iron and he began to eat iron walls and then he came across tails doll who became his first victim, and after he tore off the iron parts of doll he filled him with an organic thing, and he became the local furnace, after that they attacked a couple of badniks and invaded Scrapnik Island where they staged a massacre, after that they killed a couple more badniks, and EGGMAN wanted metal sonic, since his "power source" (which he received in sonic 4 ep metal) was "special" and the analogue of prey began, EGGMAN "sort of" called an unsuspecting metal on a "mission", which of course was a trap, and he was killed (I'm too lazy explain what happened in the next version of prey), this made eggman so thirsty that he and tails doll began a literal genocide of badniks. and then I'm too lazy to come up with anything, I can only say that in the analogue of fight or flight instead of tails there would be metal knuckles
Metal either destroyed furnace on impact or both machines exploded scrambling leaving Starved without time to prepare to hunt Sonic I refuce to think otherwise
And to add to my claim it took furnace less than 10 minutes to stop working and then repower to catch up to Sonic all metal has to do is continue moving forward long enough furnace will lose power and metal can destroy him

Furnace is built around the same point in the timeline as Metal Sonic, who (in his first iteration) is so weak he died from running into a wall, while Mecha was built after him on the timeline and is significantly more powerful.

so i hate to be "That guy" but im going to say it, metal sonic would NOT beat furnace. it wouldn't even be a close fight. and its not because metals weak, or furnace is too strong, its the fact metal sonic is made of metal, and furnace is burning with the heat to cook animals instantaneously.
furnace was designed to contain this fire, metal sonic is not, if metal sonic were to get close to furnace, his inside circuitry and other important parts would likely melt. even if he dented furnace with his impacts. and furnace is not stupid and would realize "hey, this past me isn't upgraded to contain this fire, guess ill just...open my hatch to force him to keep his distance, cover my arms in fire so my punches are lethal, and bam, were good."
furnace doesn't NEED power or speed, the nature of being "Something metal sonic cannot endure without specific upgrades" is a fact.
