That's really kind of you but Drew, Alex and I work as great team and of course you have got to give credit to Cam and Seb, photographers "extraordinare"
This is the most beautiful little sports car ever. It is perfect from any angle and in engineering terms it was years ahead of its time. I would argue that it is the best looking car ever.
There's a confidence to this series, that's just so impeccably right, I agree I'd like to see a Contempory elite. I was tonight just speaking of that big engined Elite story, great to have stumbled upon this.Last weekend in a trio train of cars heading an returning from Prescott, whilst sat passenger in a mustang Mach 1 it was fun to follow an Elan takeing raceing lines within its own lane, there's something in that. Bentley continental s1 another great act of liteness.
I REALLY love this series! Just get Charles Morgan talking about cars, any car, and film it.. It will be interesting to listen to! I imagine he's an extremely busy guy, but there must be some way to convince him to do some more episodes
I agree with those who have said Charles makes this series great. I would love to see one on the Rover P5. It's a car we don't get to see often in the US and I think they are wonderful.
Thanks for the review. I would like to see a review on the 1984 GTO Ferrari. Very few have been done on this car which was way ahead of its time in relation to engines. I also liked how tough it looked.
@@malakiblunt The Elise Mk1 weighed 700 kg, the Exige Mk1 was 780 kg. Then they complicated it and added the heavy (iron block) Toyota engine in place of the remarkably light Rover K-series. Colin would not be pleased at the added fat
Brilliant. Though I do not agree with the conclusion (to answer to your the last comment on the video: it's to your right), it was a very well done test. I'd love to see more of this.
Got to love a Lotus! Sorry, I have not the money, so I settled for an MR2 Spyder SW030, laid out by a Lotus engineer. When I pivot this little thing through a corner it is pure magic. Dream on for an Elise.
The Elite is a technical tour de force, strikingly beautiful, with flaws. There were many problems with the fibre-glass bodies, it needed heaps of maintenance, and it was noisy. More a race car for the road than a road gt or sports car. I wish I could afford one....
"Adding power makes you faster on the straight. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere." There is not real arguing the benefits of reducing weight. But Too many fanboys ascribe only to the latter and do not consider a third part: "Being lighter does you NO good if you do not have the power to take advantage of lower weight."
Carfection essentially gave a big middle finger to the naysayers bitching about the name change. I think the contact is at least on par, if not better than the original
It was very expensive at the time (close to Jaguar E type ) could be fragile and very noisy as it was aimed at competition usage. With the big development budget of a mainstream factory these issues could have been overcome and the Elan that followed was also intended to be a GRP monocoque. This being a convertible stretched the principle further and before solutions were found a fold up steel chassis was added to enable testing to be done. Unfortunately (in my opinion) This was considered so successful that it was adopted for production and became the Lotus way until the advent of the Elise chassis. Since then the GTM kit car company has produced several convertible GRP monocoque tub models with power units and suspension attached directly. Again unfortunately with their takeover by Westfield following the untimely death of designer Peter Beck, no one has continued with this product line.
a pity that the quality never matched the design. Chapman was supposed to have said that a good feature of a race car was that it fell to pieces after crossing the finish line in first place. Unfortunately the road cars partly shared this feature.
No, it's not a type 105. firstly elites never had 105 hp. The most poweful road versions had 95 hp. They can be identified by a small naca duct on the hood, which this does not have.
This was NOT the first monocoque 'mass produced' car ! The FJ Holden was made using a monocoque chassis, nearly 10 years earlier in 1948. And it was produced in huge numbers unlike the Lotus. Just sayin'..
Lancia are the ones I have seen credited with the first monocoque construction on the 1922 Lancia Lambda though I am not sure how many of them they actually sold. I know the Citroën Traction Avant was also a monocoque and they starting making that in 1934 and they made a lot of them so that might be the first really successful monocoque
I'm sure the Elite has more boot space, even without leaving the spare wheel at home (an exige never offered a spare?). The Exige is too wide, too loud and too fast for UK roads. Elite is far better.
I own several vintage cars, ranging from XJS V12 to an MG Midget, and I do agree with this statement. I would much rather drive my new Volvo in the winter and summer heat in traffic rather than an Austin Healey. These old cars are just stepping stones of advancements that lead to the cars we have today. 50 years from now, I would pass on my Volvo as something 20 times better will have come out for daily use. I take my cars out on the weekend, cautious with them trying not to break something, and avoiding small bumps in the road, to avoid breaking a wheel spoke, and I do feel stubborn for bothering with old cars, but I don't really know why.
More in this series please, I love hearing the history.
AGREED!
Had an opportunity to drive an Exige 350 on Hethel track. Such an epic car (as long as you don't go for an auto gearbox). Love the Lotuses
this is the best series on this channel
That's really kind of you but Drew, Alex and I work as great team and of course you have got to give credit to Cam and Seb, photographers "extraordinare"
Mr. Morgan, this series has become one exemplary YT class act, thanks for another great episode. Please keep them coming.
I'd quite happily sit and listen to Charles talk to me about anything. Great video gents, looking forward to the next one.
Charles Morgan does such a fantastic job presenting this series. Absolutely brilliant presenter!
That old lotus oozes class.
Wow! That was one of the best reviews I have heard in a long time. Well done Carfection. FLD R.I.P.
Charles Morgan is brilliant on this, he really need to do more.
I did enjoy a lot the Mercedes-Benz one
Thanks. Which Benz should be next?
Perhaps a 300SEL 6.3?
This is the most beautiful little sports car ever. It is perfect from any angle and in engineering terms it was years ahead of its time. I would argue that it is the best looking car ever.
This guy is awesome! Please make more videos with him!
What a splendid car review, TV quality on RUclips! Keep up the good work Carfection, i've been watching for years, and you never let us down!~

Damn, this guy is good! What a beautifully shot and directed film!
Bloody hell. Carfection just gets better and better.
The Elite is THE most beautiful Lotus ever!!!❤
such an easy presenter to watch really enjoying these videos
Gosh the sound of those Carburetors! So beautiful & Magical!
More of these please! They are wonderful.
Am really enjoying this series...Great Work +Carfection!
I've never seen before Carfection/XCar do a video about Austin Mini / Rover Mini such a legendary car besides lotus
Lotus for life
Another brilliant video from Charles. Thanks.
Charles Morgan's a brilliant presenter and this series really deserves high praise indeed. Well done! Can we have him on Top Gear, please? :-)
Near the top of my prettiest cars ever made list !
Thanks, great video of a superb example of the Elite.
Watched it twice . Good stuff.
I REALLY love this series! Just get Charles Morgan talking about cars, any car, and film it.. It will be interesting to listen to!
I imagine he's an extremely busy guy, but there must be some way to convince him to do some more episodes
One of the pretty cars of all time…the Elite type 14 that is
I cant imagine what it would be like to drive a 1959 Lotus Elite at 174mph... terrifying springs to mind, it weighed bugger all and had no downforce
I agree with those who have said Charles makes this series great. I would love to see one on the Rover P5. It's a car we don't get to see often in the US and I think they are wonderful.

probably the only two cars I have ever seen where the modern car doesnt look like an absolutely bloated whale compared to the vintage machine.
RIP Dodge Charger(Challenger).
and yet its still twice the weight of the elite !

Excellent poduction and music choice in the intro, keep it up :).
Thanks!
I have to say, I think Charles would make a magnificent adding to Top Gear!
The Exige Mk1 weighed 780kg. Fitting the Toyota engine in place of the Rover K series was a significant part of the extra weight. Most of it
That Elite is one of the nicest cars ever.
The Elite is a technical tour de force, strikingly beautiful, with flaws. There were many problems with the fibre-glass bodies, it needed heaps of maintenance, and it was noisy. More a race car for the road than a road gt or sports car. I wish I could afford one....
Just superb!🏆👍
When will the Q and A be uploaded?
Somebody,that understand cars👍🏆
wow I never knew the elite was THAT light, 503,5kg acc to wiki!
Does anyone know the Soundtrack starting at 5:17 min?
I do! I edited this film and that little track is called Glitch Lab. You can find it on Audio Network.
Thank you :D
Lotus Elite= every little sports car that came afterwards!
….owes a debt and perhaps has not moved the game on as much as you would have thought X
Does anyone know the song at the end of the video? Please someone help because i cannot seem to find the information anywhere!
Charles Morgan should be the next Top Gear host.
More Charles Morgan , please .
what engine makes that beautyfull sound in the intro
How much does the old one cost?
OMG what is the name of the song in the beginning and who is it by?
Its a section from Vivald i-The Four Seasons-Summer
whats the piece played in the intro? I tried to get it on my phone but i got three answers which makes me no trust it haha
The violin piece? It's part of Vivaldi's Four seasons (Summer)
Brilliant
I too would like to see a future version of that car, but they would probably rebadge a mx-5 instead :P

9:08 "worlds first monocoque" What about the Lancia Lambda ?
I think someone meant first GRP monocoque along with the often ignored Rochdale Olympic.
The question is, when is Morgan going to review a Morgan?
If I was a Top Gear producer I'd look at Carfection, Petrolicious and Car Throttle for inspiration on how to do it properly.
How about doing a Morgan one day?
"I want to see a future version of this car" - Look behind you?
Carfection essentially gave a big middle finger to the naysayers bitching about the name change. I think the contact is at least on par, if not better than the original
Only 1000 made, but why so few?

Chapman was also genius lotus 25 or all these beauties bye the flying dutchman
I love the classics, far more interesting and definitely more beautiful. To be honest I'm bored of new cars.
What... Alex didn't drive a Lotus... Alex come on ... 🤓🏁
No, it's not a type 105. firstly elites never had 105 hp. The most poweful road versions had 95 hp. They can be identified by a small naca duct on the hood, which this does not have.
Charles Morgan looks like everyone's father should look and speak like...
👍❤️🔥
It's like a baby Jag.
Umm, Mr. Morgan, wouldn't the Evora 400 be the fastest car Lotus makes today?
It's so much bigger. Not sure
+Alex Stern Didn't think of that. My bad!
Exige has the motor behind the driver.... like the Europa. Elite is amazing, but not the right car to compare the Exige to.
would love to drive a 1100 pound car, especially one so beautiful
i came here for the classic car
This was NOT the first monocoque 'mass produced' car !
The FJ Holden was made using a monocoque chassis, nearly 10 years earlier in 1948. And it was produced in huge numbers unlike the Lotus. Just sayin'..
!941 Nash. And it was also a production car. There may be earlier examples from other makers..

I thought it was the first monocoque composite chassis - not the first monocoque.
Agreed....but he just said "monocoque" in the vid.
I'm sure the Elite has more boot space, even without leaving the spare wheel at home (an exige never offered a spare?). The Exige is too wide, too loud and too fast for UK roads. Elite is far better.
The Elite is beautiful as much as the Exige is ugly .
Black wheels on any car are a disgrace
i hate modern day fussey styling
Lost all interest when you went to the modern car
no thanks.... older cars sucks thats why there are new models released every year.
wow
One word IDIOT.
Learn to respect your elders. Your modern cars wouldnt exist if it werent for them.

Old is gold
