Wow! I was about to purchase the Lifetime Dual Compost Tumblers, so glad I saw your video. Thanks John for sharing! Back to searching for the "perfect composter."
IMPORTANT UPDATE! The morning after posting this video I was contacted by Lifetime Products. First, I need to apologize, as I made a mistake. My email is overfilled with emails and I never get to see the majority of them. I did submit my original inquiry to them in Mid January. they responded a few days later asking for "model #'s" of my composters from the instruction manuals. I did not see this email, so they DID respond to me. So I am publically apologizing for this. That being said, I no longer have the instruction manuals and other than owning the composters now, I have no idea of the #'s they needed. I figured if I made a detailed video showing the composters as well as stating where I purchased them from, they would know which parts to send, and they would have sent them. So this is my error. So They DID originally RESPOND via email. I expected them to ship the correct parts. This did not happen. So I returned the composters as shown in the video. After speaking with them today, they did apologize for this situation and agreed that they should have sent the parts and they dropped the ball. They offered to give me a full refund for the Lifetime 80 gallon composter I still own. I said, despite the problems, I still like the Lifetime 80 gallon, and I would rather have another one, so they are sending me one instead of a refund. In addition, they are sending me new latch arms for the existing Lifetime 80 gallon composter which was my previous issue with that model. I also made recommendations to improve their current composters so that people do not have the same problems with them in the future. They said one of their engineers may contact me for my suggestions. One easy change is to change the philips screws that hold on the bands on the 60130 composter to a hex head to get better tightening ability. At this point, I can recommend the Lifetime 80 gallon composter, and hope they improve their other models and become more proactive about customer service in the future.
In light of this situation, I felt compelled to also change the original title of this video, as Lifetime has taken care of me as best they can at this point as a customer.
Buyer beware for sure! Thanks for sharing this. Good job for documenting it as well. These days there are far too many stories of crappy customer service.
I have been watching your videos for just a year now and am really enjoying them. I had a very nice vegetable garden once many years ago and covid has set me up with extra time at home. Now I am so excited about getting back into growing my greens. I hesitate to spend so much money on a composter but agree with you about "you get what you pay for". Actually 338.44 out the door isn't too bad. . The only thing I worry about is putting it together. Little old lady here. They are still honoring your 10% discount which helps the sting a bit. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. You have so much energy.
Thx John I've been trying to find a Lifetime dual composter for nearly a year... I have finally bit the bullet and ordered the Joraform Composter. I am sorry I waited so long. I really appreciate your videos and your product reviews. Regards
I have the lifetime triangle composter like the first one you showed. It’s probably close to ten years old. My only complaint when it’s fully loaded it’s tough to turn. It sits outside in full Western NY weather. I’ve been pleasantly surprised it’s lasted this long.
Thank you John. I have 2 of the 80 gallon. One being perfect and one with a latch that pops open occasionally. Never occurred to me to write the company. Will do. Thank you John.
I've had the Lifetime Dual Composter for a few seasons and it's starting to come apart. The corners are weak, and the lids are becoming precarious to open/close. Also, I've had chickens for a couple years, and am about to add a rabbitry to my suburban homestead, so my manure composting needs are increasing. I'm just going to set up a couple bins with pallets and do it the old fashioned way with a pitchfork. It may be more work, but the exercise is good and I'll be getting a lot of good compost.
Hey John. Love your channel and the content. Very glad Lifetime contacted you, and you're a good man for posting an apology as most people would've kept silent. Am considering the 80-gallon unit, but the 65 gallon may work too. Thanks again.
We have the black one and it's doing ok. I read Amazon reviews about the rust problem, and most have said that parts were replaced promptly when CALLING customer service. We have two of their deck boxes as well. One arrived with a part missing. No response to email, but the part was shipped out the next day I called them. Apparently they simply don't respond to emails.
They are idiots to not respond to you, they could have saved so much bad attention for just a few cheap parts. Now they have almost 400k angry people who will never buy their product. Shame on them for using the name "lifetime" on something that won't last 5 years.
I'm pretty sure it was way past his warranty period. I'm also sure it was a regular employee that took his complain, because someone in the management would of acted like you said.
I originally had the same problem with the double-barrel composter. You really need to tighten the screws on the metal straps using the right screwdriver bit. I also put some old trailer straps under each metal strap which has really held it together well for about 2 years so far...
Can someone please tell me if I can put meat or milk products in the compost? Also, throwing a pie manure from a clean source into the compost bean, along with my waste: a) hurts bacteria b) doesn't hurt but takes longer to brake c) is recommended Thank you to whom takes the time to respond!
dvdrwsor the knee jerky reaction most people will say no. However after lots of RUclips I personally do. I compost EVERYTHING that comes from my kitchen. All leftovers. yes this may cause critters to come. But I haven't had a problem and it will result in a more diversity in your nutrients in fresh rich compost.
I can already assure you that you're going to get a lot of mixed responses. If you ask John he'll almost certainly say no since since he does his best to stay away from GMO and Hormone additives. On the flip side, you can compost any formally living tissue. I would just make sure to cover the meat/dairy products well inside the compost pile to avoid rats, dogs, etc. As far as manure, I would go with B & C. As a bio major I'm kind of overly concerned about parasitic microorganisms. There are several ways to safely use manure for compost. This article is a good read regarding that topic: topics.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/08/manure-safe-or-not/comment-page-1/?_r=0
Thank you both for responding. Very nice link you gave. So no meat because of the GMO. Good to know. Also, E. coli is the danger in manure... A year old manure left is the sun is safer as I understand, or a way to sterilize it before I add to the pile of compost. I googled B & C , but with no success...
The GeoBin compost bin is the best on the market in my opinion. I have a few that I fill with shredded leaves and grass clippings along with some coffee grounds, and it usually gets to about 140 degrees. I turn it after about a month, and let it sit, and then add a bunch of nightcrawler earthworms, and it turns into black gold about 2 months later. So, it takes about 3 months total.
I haven't gotten compost yet from mine but started them last fall with leaves and grass, I mean tons of leaves.. I filled 3 geobins to the top. I also have the Jora but for the cost it just makes so little compost, no way could I put all my yard waste into a tumbler. Geobins seem like a great product, the company was responsive too when I got one off amazon missing the keys, they sent them right out no delays.
Will give it a try. Not sure if it will work for the John because he said he wanted an enclosed tumbler to keep the bad insects out. Would be nice for me since I have a pretty big yard and like to keep it neat (only part of it is a garden until i get more free time).
Hey John I really enjoy your videos, I've been trying ,without success in finding a lifetime duel barrel composter. I'm thankful I saw your video on the long time review... I bit the bullet on the Jora NE271.. I love it. It's fantastic. because of your video you saved me $239.00.. THANKS JOHN
Thank you for this information. I bought the Lifetime dual composter over 5 years ago from Costco and one of the bins is unusable because of rusting. I bought a standing cylindrical composter, without a bottom, from Canadian Tire today as I have one of these already and I get great compost from it. One question I have is, can you remove the bin that isn't working so you can use that space?
I have the lifetime dual barrel style composted and have had similar challenges. Compost falls out of the seams when I tumble it. Was also a major pain to build.
Thanks, I was disappointed that I missed out on the dual composters last year at CostCo and was planning to buy them this year. I will look for something with better reviews!
Unbelievable Lifetime has not responded. Shame on them. And hooray to Costco - how did we ever live without them. BUT, I was wondering ... there isn't a lifetime return policy at Costco ... is there? I thought it extends for one year. Would love to hear I'm wrong. I'd also love to afford that big badboy from Jura, but ... the Lifetime at less than half the cost will have to do for now. Thanks so much for all your input. Although the Lifetime isn't the Cadillac, you have me feeling more confident about IT over so many others. Happy gardening! And thank you!
i just use the old fashioned square shaped composter, still doing its' job. The only thing different is that it doesn't rotate, involves elbow grease to mix in, we use a pitchfork or shovel.
Thanks for the heads up. I have the lifetime 80 gal. Seemed like a good place to start as I have no experience with composting. We have about 16 pine trees in our yard though, and I thought all that pine straw would work as good as leaves and wood chips. A year later, and I still don't have any usable compost! Now I know pine straw slows down the process. Any recommendations for getting this thing going without starting over from scratch?? :(. What should I focus on adding? I started adding food scraps in again. And how often should I be turning? I thought I was suppose to just leave it alone after it was full and after further research, it seems like it should be turned a few times per week. So confusing!
I have those lifetime double composers you got at Costco. Not only are my handles rusted, but the hinges have rusted through so the lid just comes off in my hand.
Thinking of buying the Lifetime double bin and was about to click the buy button until I saw this video, I'd really like to buy the Joraform but that currently sells for £999 in the UK and the Lifetime double is just £261. Is the extra expense truly justified or can you recommend the the cheaper one now they have tried to fix the issues? Love the videos, keep making great content.
Wow I was just going to buy a lifetime composter this weekend based off your recommendation. Thanks for the heads up, I will look to invest my money elsewhere.
Been watching your videos for years and I got into juicing and bought my first juicer from you. In the market for a new composter and like that you, I live in a hot climate, Phoenix AZ. I replayed this video since I am a subscriber. John, why do you need insulation inside the composter in Vegas or Phoenix, cold is not one of our problems most of the year. does it protect the compost from our never ending 115 degree days we are now subjected to? Seems it takes up and wastes space? Plus how can it not rust having wet stuff inside? Lastly, living in vegas how often do you add water to your composter both in the summer and winter? I have the cheap plastic ones and they have done OK but it takes me 6 months to get out any product so it is time to upgrade. let me know your thoughts if you see this
This is exactly why I dislike these big corporations; because there really isn't any benefit to "competition", as they seem to have a "race to the bottom" rather than "race to the top". When one sinks to a new low in quality and customer service, other companies generally think they can get away with cutting corners too. I don't have a big growing operation, just growing residentially for my own food but am starting to try composting. I have a question for you? Is there a way to prevent compost from stinking like the worst sewer ever? I am trying to use fruit and vegetable scraps and really can't afford a composter. Are there household additives I can add to cut the smell while things are decomposing or will adding dirt from outside do it?
Good for you. 8 Franklins for a composter and you've got 2 & 1/2 of em, and you say maybe a third on the way. I've always wondered why you didn't just buy an acre lot (or more). Thanks for the vids. I can scratch lifetime off the list. What happened to the insulated Good Ideas composter you looked at a show last year I think?
My sister uses a tumbler type composter. I hate it. There just seems to be no point. It is too heavy to spin. I just have a compost pile in the back of the yard. It has served me well for years.
I was ready to pull the trigger on the 270, with your awesome coupon code, until I found quiet a few complaints about rust starting by year 1 and then rusting out by the 3rd or 4th year. Could it be that they are not composting the correct ratio? How is your Jora doing now? I think you are in Arizona, so rust probably is not an issue. Update 7/13/20 The company contacted me via a phone call the next day. They confirmed what I had expected, lack of carbon/poor composting ratio. After talking with a very informative representative I feel confident in buying the 270.
hi , another great video , i have lost the screw bolt with the cross head that holds the metal band around 1 side of the life time composter barrel from costco, bought 5 yrs ago lol ,, do you know the bolt screw im refereeing to and where i can get it in the uk ? cheers
my mom just uses an old garbage can with the bottom cut out. It seems to work. they get rich black compost out of the bottom. I was thinking of getting one too.
Thanks, I did see these last year but did not get one. I also loooooooove Costco's return policy. Great Company, can't say enough good things about them.
Thanks, John! I was just about to buy that life time dual composter. Should I buy it knowing or being aware that it will fall apart eventually? I don´t think so. Even if they have a good customer service. Best regards from Mexico!
Seem like you could just take a $15 water barrel holding 55 gallons and cut a door in one or 2 sides to hinge open for adding compost to. Then just roll the whole thing in the ground. Paint it so uv won't damage the plastic type or put a tarp over top for longer lifespan.
send this to costco so they won't sell their products. this company is apparently flaky. even if they do respond after this pressure they are flaky and most of us don't have a channel to put pressure on them. costco don't sell products from this flaky company.
You're right about the price of the big Joraform being pricey, $799 is no joke. I wonder how much finished organic compost i could buy by the yard for that money? Oh wait i already know. Organic mushroom compost costs $35 a cubic yard so i could get approximately 24 cubic yards of compost for 800 bucks. I do like how you hung out to dry the bogus company on their failures.
John, Can you post a link to purchase the Joraform composter? I went on their webpage and they don't have a section that allows us to purchase the. Thanks for another great video. I was going to buy a Lifetime Composter this week but not now!
The large one I use in this video is at: www.compostingwarehouse.com/Jora-Compost-Tumbler-400_p_18.html The mid size is the other size I recommend for most people: www.compostingwarehouse.com/Jora-Compost-Tumbler-270-_p_19.html get free shipping and use coupon code GREEN10 for 10% off your composter I do not recommend their small size as I believe its too small.
Man I have such a problem with my compost I made homemade compost bin . I put grass clippings and I put some leaves and a little bit of branches and i put a little bit compost in there to get it started it didn't work so I put compost starring that I bought at Orchers and it instill doesn't seem to be getting really hot I notice a lot of Nats around there the been I think I'm ready to give up
those type of composters are really designed for small gardens. at your scale I would consider it worm composter much faster. and more appropriate for your scale. look how much space they take up .
True. There was a time when I typed all caps to pursue ease of reading later. I think small character can be converted to caps though by using find and replace.
sorry to hear they didnt respond to you. i emailed them for replacement parts for mine & they mailed them out. they didnt respond & i just got the parts in the mail a few weeks later.
Whether they responded or not, a person should not have to spend so much time on a product return. They should invest a minute on development, by asking people who will be using them for input. That being said, I wonder why John doesn't simply repurpose an existing barrel, maybe he isn't handy, but buying and returning new things just encourages consumption.
Another company I won't buy from, now, although your more recent video now gives a model (no longer available) since you're no loner recommending Jora. Oy vey! Thanks for the tip on Costco AND the philosophical reminder to de-clutter ;-)
Wow! I was about to purchase the Lifetime Dual Compost Tumblers, so glad I saw your video. Thanks John for sharing! Back to searching for the "perfect composter."
John is pissed, lol. Lifetime Composter stock drops 85% overnight. John is the man. I'll never touch a Lifetime product. Thanks for the video John.
Thanks, John. I was just about to order a Lifetime composter.
At this point, I can recommend the Lifetime 80 gallon composter, and hope they improve their other models and become more proactive about customer service in the future.
In light of this situation, I felt compelled to also change the original title of this video, as Lifetime has taken care of me as best they can at this point as a customer.
They also sent me replacement parts for my 80 gallon tumbler. I got them 10 days after speaking with their customer service dept.
Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens your so awesome!
Lifetime Dual barrel computer model 60130U
Joe Spr , Give the guy a break. The man is pissed, and deservidly so....

I have the same Lifetime dual composters and experienced the same exact problems with them.
I agree, Costco is great.
Thx John I've been trying to find a Lifetime dual composter for nearly a year... I have finally bit the bullet and ordered the Joraform Composter. I am sorry I waited so long. I really appreciate your videos and your product reviews. Regards

So noted, John. Thx for the heads up

Lol, I wonder if this company responds.

c) is recommended

I googled B & C , but with no success...
Happy Easter John I hope you make a new video soon and I hope you enjoy this Easter day with your family and friends
John, I appreciate your honest review. I'm not buying a Lifetime composer ever!

The company contacted me via a phone call the next day. They confirmed what I had expected, lack of carbon/poor composting ratio. After talking with a very informative representative I feel confident in buying the 270.
I have a joraform composter one of the foam pieces came the top ... should I contact joraform?
hi , another great video , i have lost the screw bolt with the cross head that holds the metal band around 1 side of the life time composter barrel from costco, bought 5 yrs ago lol ,, do you know the bolt screw im refereeing to and where i can get it in the uk ? cheers
my mom just uses an old garbage can with the bottom cut out.
Best regards from Mexico!
good to know about the lifetime dual barrow. I was planning on getting one for myself. keep up the videos
DUDE! Awesome channel all the way around. Thanks for your expertise.
Great video, as always! Thanks, John!
Coccanut oil and a scrub brush to remove the rust and the oil should give a little protection
Seem like you could just take a $15 water barrel holding 55 gallons and cut a door in one or 2 sides to hinge open for adding compost to. Then just roll the whole thing in the ground. Paint it so uv won't damage the plastic type or put a tarp over top for longer lifespan.
how easy (or hard) is it to empty the ready compost from the Joraform composters?
send this to costco so they won't sell their products. this company is apparently flaky. even if they do respond after this pressure they are flaky and most of us don't have a channel to put pressure on them. costco don't sell products from this flaky company.
lol wut I don't entirely agree with you but your comment was good.
I’ve been looking at compost and was came across a lifetime dual unit I was thinking of getting but definitely won’t now.
John,
Can you post a link to purchase the Joraform composter? I went on their webpage and they don't have a section that allows us to purchase the. Thanks for another great video. I was going to buy a Lifetime Composter this week but not now!
The large one I use in this video is at:
www.compostingwarehouse.com/Jora-Compost-Tumbler-400_p_18.html
The mid size is the other size I recommend for most people:
www.compostingwarehouse.com/Jora-Compost-Tumbler-270-_p_19.html
get free shipping and use coupon code
GREEN10
for 10% off your composter
I do not recommend their small size as I believe its too small.
Good there is a Costco return policy. Would not buy a lifetime product.
Aloha John: I live in Hawai'i and they do not ship the Joraform here,Do you know where I might be able to order one on-line???
Appreciate you John. Good wisdom, helpful info.
Completely agree. Mine did the same thing
do you have a video about how to dechlorinate tap water so it doesnt ruin your compost tea?
Hey john one question do you still pro rockdust? Do you still put them in the compost like in the past?
Everyone should go to their website and review and rate their products
you "kaled" it John! keep up the great work.
Thanks for the tip on lifetime. Thanks for your great videos.
Man I have such a problem with my compost I made homemade compost bin . I put grass clippings and I put some leaves and a little bit of branches and i put a little bit compost in there to get it started it didn't work so I put compost starring that I bought at Orchers and it instill doesn't seem to be getting really hot I notice a lot of Nats around there the been I think I'm ready to give up
Thank you, you just saved me from making a mistake!
It makes sense not to use plastic for composting. Heat causes plastic to break down.
You're so funny! Yay! You got to return. Wonderful ;)
I like this channel. I learn a lot from you!
those type of composters are really designed for small gardens. at your scale I would consider it worm composter much faster. and more appropriate for your scale. look how much space they take up .
All caps are handy for the visually challenged people. So instead of looking at it as shouting, think of it as a way to help the visually impared!
True. There was a time when I typed all caps to pursue ease of reading later. I think small character can be converted to caps though by using find and replace.
id love to know how much money you spend to grow a few dollars worth of food
thx for feedback , I will never ever buy from them either .Hate this type of companies.
sorry to hear they didnt respond to you. i emailed them for replacement parts for mine & they mailed them out. they didnt respond & i just got the parts in the mail a few weeks later.
Haha ... there was a RoundUp commercial at the beginning of the video
got a ask you ...we have a bad bind weed problem what would be great to get rid of it.
chickens..
That's what I was thinking I don't really want to use any chemicals in my yard so I will be letting my chickens over there
theyh really clean up the bugs as well, havnt seen earwigs in a long time.. they fertilise the ground and turn weeds into eggs
they work for me ;)
That they do..they get all my scraps just need to move them to that side of the yard
really enjoying the shorter videos, keep it up! :)
Invaluable. Thank you.
i saw going to buy one off amazon but know i wont. maybe i will find another one
i was going to get a lifetime
thats the exact reason I make my own compost bins
well, you gave them every chance to provide good customer service and retain some good will with you... sucks for them
I returned mine last year. Just wasn't worth f*ing with.
ima try the 37 gallon amazon choice composter
really great video - good review
Very helpful Thank You
I got the same one from Costco and it is indeed a POS.
Tumba take it back. Tell costco to not buy thrm
Thank you
Another company I won't buy from, now, although your more recent video now gives a model (no longer available) since you're no loner recommending Jora. Oy vey! Thanks for the tip on Costco AND the philosophical reminder to de-clutter ;-)
"This composter is dead to me" LOL ;-)
Lifetime... of aggravation!
Jeepers, John, you're about the nicest guy in the world. And these guys treated YOU like this? Thanks for the heads-up ...
good to know info. thanks
just pile up your compost in a pile if you got the room! compost happens!
GOOD JOB
Thanks!!
Do mobsters in Vegas use Joraform?
Just return them to Costco and get your money back! They can look up the receipts,
Oh now you just said that - ha
Got compost?
