Welcome to the weekly live Q&A with Pastor David Guzik, author of the Enduring Word Bible commentary. After our lead question, Pastor David takes questions via the live chat - simply add your questions & our moderators will arrange & deliver them to Pastor David according to theme or subject!
This week, Pastor David's lead "question" comes from Aviva, who left a comment on a video in our Geneis series. Their comment addresses Pastor David's commentary on Gen 9:5-7, which deals with a people’s duty to capital punishment, and the idea that “a land is defiled without it.”
    Aviva writes:
"I'm sorry but no. You can't take something from the old testament and apply it to your life or All our lives. Yes, the Bible says capital punishment was required back then but remember it also said that you had to kill your daughter if she had been promiscuous. The message of Christianity is not to kill bad people, since Jesus has died for them. The message is to love."

    This week's questions:
    0:00 (Delayed) Greetings and Introduction!
    3:50 Lead question
    14:45 Concluding thoughts
16:51 Should Cain’s life have been taken? Did it not happen bc there was no government?
19:10 Can you explain why David or Cain didn’t receive Capital punishment? I struggle with this
20:36 What do you think about forgiveness with the argument of reconciliation? In some cultures, rather than applying the punishment according to law, forgiveness is encouraged to prevent hatred/revenge.
22:40 Here is a controversial question: Should people who have had or promoted an abortion be prosecuted for murder and be subject to capital punishment?
24:38 What about the so-called "morning after pill"?
    25:13 Wasn’t David’s murder of Bathsheba’s husband Uriah premeditated?
27:30 In Psalms 29, it says the voice of the LORD shakes deserts and breaks cedar trees. In 1 Kings 19 we hear that the LORD was a still small voice. How should we be expecting God’s voice?
32:23 How do you know if it's God talking to you and not yourself talking to yourself?
34:00 The sins I have done against someone when I was a 10 year old child still bother me. I was exposed, then exposed others. I have confessed my sins, and asked God for forgiveness but still have memories. Is it necessary to revisit this with anyone? The person that this was done to? Although we were children?
37:33 A girl in our youth group was sxlly abused by her father. He went to prison for this, but is being released soon and she says she has forgiven him, and is excited to see him. Is this right or safe? Is it wrong for me to continue to be angry? How do you know when you’re feeling righteous anger and the desire for justice & when you’re feeling hate or a grudge?
40:04 Is it true God will give us peace about directions to take in life?
41:27 How can Christians make sure we "make it to the end"(Matt 24 :9-13), especially in light of the "great apostasy" warning for the last days?
45:31 Would you say the wrath and love of God are 2 sides of the same coin?
47:25 Is wine necessary for communion, and how frequent should communion be taken?
52:13 What should believers do so they cannot be deceived by the devil?
54:05 Regarding Hebrews 12 : 10, what does it mean for God to discipline us? In your commentary you say God doesn’t make us pay for our sins through discipline, so how does discipline work for someone living in sin?
57:02 Were years in the time of Noah the same as Years are today? Asking since the Bible says it took Noah 100 years to build the ark.
57:42 How can the omniscient God the Son not know about His day of second coming?
59:17 Can Satan heal a person in order to deceive them to make them believe they are worshiping the true God?
1:00:20 Do I put God to the test when I ride thrill-rides in amusement parks?
1:01:30 I've recently discovered that there are people who are afraid to study the book of Revelation. The reason I was given is Revelation 22 :18. What are your thoughts on this?
1:02:35 Hi Pastor, I'm unsure about this year's presidential election since neither candidate seems ideal. How can I vote in a way that aligns with my faith and honors God?Thank you.
1:04:33 Mr. Guzik, help! Silly question - Are snakes inherently evil?? I sometimes feel bad for thinking they're cute when a serpent is the first enemy in the Bible!

I think that Cain didn't intend to kill Abel but fought with him in hatred and was an accident. The reason I think this is because God treats Cain like a manslaughter case we find in the law. He was banished and not put to death.

I think when sin entered his heart it was bad enough for God to dislike. Remember when Jesus said that if we hurt our brother/sister by simply saying something with our tongues we have committed murder in our hearts. We have the spiritual aspect of sin and we have the natural aspect of sin. What I am trying to say is forget about how Cain executed his hatred or dislike the issue started at the heart . We humans always see things in degrees but God sees sin at the heart. Remember Jesus could tell what was in every person’s heart. Therefore I came to the conclusion that the new covenant is a lot harder to follow than the old covenant, Jesus elevated the law by teaching us about matters of the spirit or heart. You don’t need to go sleep with someone to commit adultery. You don’t need to murder someone to commit murder. God is preparing us for holiness and this is why the apostles would say “who will be saved”? Jesus replied ,that with men’s effort no one. But with God’s help anything can be accomplished. The sabbath rest is spiritual. God has done all the work of salvation.

Mr Guzik, about Revelation, in relation to the other person about reading the book of Revelation, on the live session. In the past i have made notes of my understandings and underlined my bible. It was just for me, for my understanding not sharing with anyone else. But, a few months ago, i had my guard down, and I continued on to the book of revelation. I dropped my pen down, right away and that warning popped into my head, as i have read parts of revelation before. I was really worried and it wasn't intentional. Now I just don't mark any Bible anywhere. I got a new bible and have the fear of even discussing revelation. I hope Jesus will forgive me , it wasn't intentional. It was just me putting my understanding in notes in my own personal bible. I just had my guard down, when it came to revelation, as I pondered at one or two points. It wasn't intentional, I had my guard down.

For most situations, everything I need to know is in the Word. That is God talking to me. If I need an answer, i can pray, and he will lead me to the answer in the Word. On rare occassions someone may need to move quickly from danger. Soldiers have experienced such warnings. And there is a relationship with God like the prophets had. They wrote down what God said. If Moses and the prophets did not hear God, why would we have a Bible at all. And then there are those like Job..

There was a Binlical death penalty. And it was to be judged and carried out by those without sin. So, it should behoove rulers to understand who are those without sin. These are judges who have sinned (because all have sinned,) but at the time of judgment, they are free from sin. I agree we need to make the system more Biblical. Jurors and judges should be believers. Lawyers would need to be believers under a lot of prayer if they are going to select godly jurors. It's a good thkng to help young Christians with the cost of law school. Police academy is a good investment. Help where we can.

What if someone is truly repentent of their sin ? For instance, if someone maybe be waiting a long time , to be put to the death penalty.

Good question. I wonder if there's an appeal that could move someone off death row and into general population. Even then, we can't deliberately endanger the other prisoners.

Pastor Lance replies - As Pastor David said, one can be forgiven by God for any sin with genuine repentance. But a debt to society is still owed. If you knock over a previous vase in a store and apologize, the manager can forgive you - but you still have to pay for it.
