Hello everyone! This movie was so stressful and John Malkovich gave me the creeps!! Overall had a great time and would love to hear more Clint Eastwood suggestions! Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)
Of course you'll want to do the 3 "man with no name" movies: 1964 A Fistful of Dollars 1965 For A Few Dollars More 1966 The Good, the Bad, the Ugly Also, some of the Dirty Harry movies: Dirty Harry, Magnum Force and The Enforcer. In addition I highly recommend the following: 1971 Play Misty For Me (one of the original psychotic female slasher movies) 1973 High Plains Drifter (western with a supernatural feel to it) 1979 Escape From Alcatraz 1976 Outlaw Josey Wales. Also Gran Torino is a must. So many movies, a massive filmography.
There's been some uproar in Hollywood about the age gap between the leading men & the leading ladies. For good reason. & You caught that here. At movies release, Eastwood is 24yr-wait, make that almost a quarter century, older than Rene Russo.
I had the privilege of seeing this film on its opening weekend. Clint Eastwood did several good films in the 1990's, this one, A Perfect World, Bridges of Madison County, Absolute Power. And John Malkovic! Every time I see him, I flash on In the Line of Fire and Con Air!
"Do you have what it takes to take a bullet, or is life too precious?" "Well, I'll be thinkin' about that when I'm pissin' on your grave." Fun Fact: This marks the first time that the Secret Service offered its full cooperation in the making of a movie. Music Enthusiast Fact: Not widely known, but Clint Eastwood is a proficient jazz pianist who did his own piano playing in this movie. Action Star Fact: The 62-year old Clint Eastwood (with the help of a safety belt) actually did hang six stories above the ground on the ledge scene, although stuntmen did the jump and the fall onto the fire escape. Making Lemonade Fact: John Malkovich improvised the scene where he puts the gun into his mouth. Executive producer and director Wolfgang Petersen liked it so much, he left it in the movie. Apparently, Clint Eastwood started laughing off camera, that's why you see Malkovich smiling while the gun is in his mouth.
In my comment about The Fugitive not long ago, I mentioned this film as been a great film to react to. So pleased you found it, and had a great reaction to this.
Oh I love this movie. Good choice bro. I think it's this first time I ever noticed John Malkovich. Loved his calm demeanor. For other Eastwood movies, I'd like to suggest Unforgiven, Bloodwork, Space Cowboys, Absolute Power and True Crime. The last 4 do not get suggested much but I thought they were entertaining enough.
I started watching you when you reviewed Wrath of Khan but stuck around as I like your insights. The piano song was “As time goes by” which is known for its line “a kiss is just a kiss” and is the song that Humphrey Bogart says to “play it again Sam” in Casablanca. It isn’t well known but one of my favorite Eastwood movies is a one off called Play Misty for Me. That movie is creepy. I watched all of Eastwood’s stuff a while back and that one stands out. I’m not a cowboy fan but those good bad ugly movies are kind of what he’s known for. I really enjoyed the Dirty Harry films so maybe check out the first one of those and see what you think.
"Why is this movie so stressful?" Because this is what we call a thriller. Wolfgang Petersen was mostly known for directing 'Das Boot' ('The Boat' 1981), though if you do that, get the 5 hour version which is usually listed as a mini series. All versions were filmed together, but the mini series was released later, but it is worth it. I have heard that if you don't speak German you should watch it in German with the subtitles, but it's not a must. As fro Eastwood, there is the 'Dollar Trilogy which started the Spaghetti Western Genre, though the only connecting part of the trilogy is that Eastwood plays the same character more or less. While he has a big name for his western movies, he was also great in the 'Dirty Harry' movie series and other movies like 'Escape from Alcatraz' (1979), Where Eagles dare (1968), Firefox (1982), Gran Torino (2008), Absolute Power (1997) to list a few examples.
As a kid at that time i knew about eastwood, he was already a meme and quoted in pop culture all over but this was also my first clint flick and made me a life long fan of his : )
In my country Clint Eastwood is most famous for his Dirty Harry movies. 5 in total 1. Dirty Harry 2. Magnum force 3. The enforcer 4. Sudden Impact 5. The Dead Pool But my favorite Clint Eastwood character is Gunny Highway in Heartbreak Ridge.
STRONG recommendations: Dirty Harry (the first film in the beloved franchise), The Outlaw Josey Wales (my absolute favorite Clint Eastwood Western!), The Bridges of Madison County (romance! - and Blue Ribbon Award winner), Unforgiven (Oscar-nominated for Best Actor, and won for Best Picture & Best Director), Million Dollar Baby (again Oscar-nominated for Best Actor, and again won for Best Picture & Best Director), Gran Torino (the film won the César Award and he won Best Actor from the National Board of Review), Honky Tonk Man (he portrays a guitar-playing country singer), Space Cowboys (playing an astronaut - won Best Foreign Language Film at the Kinemo Junpo Awards), and one of my all-time favorites, Heartbreak Ridge (he's a Marine at the real-life invasion of Grenada). And that's not even a third of his starring roles or a third of the films he's directed!
Clint Eastwood plays a grumpy young man in Kelley's Heroes (1970) - a great world war 2 dark comedic drama, with an amazing supporting cast in the form of Telly Savalas and Donald Sutherland (woof woof), amongst others - plus a cool score from Lalo Schifrin. Totally agree with others, would love to see you react to the Dirty Harry movies.
The movie was nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Original Screenplay, Jeff Maguire (Lost to The Piano) Best Film Editing, Anne V. Coates (Lost To Schindler's List) Best Supporting Actor for John Malkovich( lost to Tommy Lee Jones, The Fugitive.)
Great Clint Eastwood film Oliver and great reaction. This film terrified me when it was first released for some reason! I totally forgot that Tobin Bell (Aka Jigsaw from Saw franchise) played a villain at the beginning!!
YES!!!! THIS WAS THR VERY FIRST CLINT EASTWOOD MOVIE I SAW ON TV! I remember watching this movie on NBC then I watched in 2013 on AMC for it's 20th Anniversary. I finally got it on DVD a month later at a thrift store.
I saw this movie as a sneak preview, having won tickets on the radio. I took my mom, who was definitely a fan! But, we both enjoyed this movie big time. John Malkovich is such a good actor, making interesting choices. Wolfgang Peterson just died last year; I saw him in the In Memoriam section at the Oscars last night.
Ohhh man I was so excited to see you review/react to this movie! It’s one of my favorite Clint Eastwood films, as a kid it made me want to be a Secret Service agent.
Great reaction. Malkovich is a beast of an actor. I don't know if you seen him in Shadow of the Vampire. The Dollar trilogy is a go to in Eastwood's portfolio. The last of those -the Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the longest one and a classic. Though I like all 3 for different reasons. The 1st is a remake of Yojimbo and the 2nd has the character Mortimer, which I love. I would also suggest The Outlaw Josey Wales, Play Misty for Me, Dirty Harry, Every Which Way but Loose and Space Cowboys for some eclectic choices. Also some of his directorial movies you should check out Bird, Perfect World, Unforgiven, and Million Dollar Baby.
A film I'm certain you'd enjoy where John Malkovich plays a side character that's important to the film is called 'Rounders' from 1998 starring Matt Damon. Ed Norton is in it as well who plays one of the most annoying characters on screen IMO lol. Also, a movie that this kind of reminds me of 'In The Line Of Fire' is called 'The Jackal' that came out in 1997 starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. Sidney Poitier plays the FBI agent or the Deputy Director to be more precise. It's not a bad movie that's loosely based on the film 'The Day of the Jackal' (1973) which is the superior movie out of the two. And while we're on films about America's intelligence agencies, there's a thriller starring Will Smith called 'Enemy Of The State' that came out in 1998 that's pretty entertaining.
i like most Clint Eastwood films. Every which way but loose, is a good one also. Also watch these non Eastwood films. Bless the beast and the children, Summer of 42, the other side of the mountain, freebie and the Bean, The Little Prince (1974),
"How did he know there was nothing in there?" One of the silliest tropes in movies is handing someone an empty firearm. Bullets are heavy, made of lead, and the weight of an empty firearm is easily noticeable to anyone with a passing familiarity with firearms.
Another silly trope is "tracing the call" as the phone company will not put a call through without knowing who to bill for what. Every call is traced for billing purposes. For the police tracing a call means getting a warrant for the call records and presenting it to the phone company.
@Bent Ed I doubt he would. 70s contemporary movies are usually not socially acceptable to young audiences. His comments on the relationship verify that.
This was one of my favorite movies in the 90s. (I can't believe I missed this when I was watching through your catalog!) I wrote a character analysis on this for a film class in college.
Here are some classics of the Clint Eastwood filmgraphy that you cannot miss: The Unforgiven Dirty Harry Pale Rider Heartbreak Ridge Paint Your Wagon Kelly's Heroes The Rookie
While his Dirty Harry, Man With No Name, Any Which Way But… franchises help make him, I tend to prefer him in different kinds of roles, like Escape from Alcatraz, Play Misty for Me, Million Dollar Baby and A Perfect World (for Kevin Costner as well).
if they made a X-Men movie in the 1970's, Clint Eastwood would have made a great Wolverine (if they made X-Men in the 1980's or 1990's then Kurt Russell)
Like to recommend my favorite Clint Eastwood Movies 1 Pale Rider 1985 2 Kelly's Heroes 1970 3 Where Eagles Dare 1969 4 Gran Torino 2006 and the Man With No Name Trilogy 1964 to 1966
35:20, (SPOILERS) he'd rather die than go to prison or in a mental hospital, knowing that he wouldn't survive. Not only that, his former CIA colleagues would have had him killed already.
LOL, surprised you weren't getting that Malkovich's character was just using different disguises. I don't think I've ever seen that or ever even thought of that myself.
48:10 My mother's first husband was 32 years older than her and they started their relationship when she was 16. So this age disparity doesn't appear weird to me at all. 🙂
You picked an AMAZING film to be your first Clint Eastwood movie. One of my favorites. I hope you are able to react to all of the Dirty Harry films as well. There are 5 of them.
Eastwood is a great director and pretty much all of his directed films are at least watchable and most a good. If you're going to watch the movie that made him a mega star, Dirty Harry, then you should also watch the sequel Magnum Force. Dirty Harry has the unfortunate distinction of birthing the vigilante fad of the '70s and '80s which Magnum Force is a very passionate and intelligently written refutation of. The rest of the movies in the franchise are just lazy cash ins and can be skipped.
This film was released when I was in junior high. It marks the slow and gradual switch of him branching out into non-western films, including drama and action, even a sci-fi film. He did make a western in 2021 called Cry Macho. However, as tge actor has gotten older and older, he done less action-y films. He still has dine actuon films in the early 2000s. Other than Cry Macho, he has done a western film in 25 years. Besides Cry Macho, the other major film was Unforgiven a year before In The Ljne of Fire. He is 92.
@@5hanesBoard Mainly because she was young enough to be his daughter, and it's just another example of a movie that forces a love interest when it didn't need it
Now I remember why I never watched this movie a second time. Too much profanity. A little emphasizes true frustration or grief. Too much just shows that the script writer has a weak mind and is trying to express himself forcefully.
To me, Clint Eastwood is politically a joke and completely wrong but, he is an amazing actor. He gives a four-star performance to a one-star script. He really does nail it each and every time.
ITLOF, your first Eastwood movie...? How can you like movies SO MUCH (apparently) and know SO LITTLE about them ? ^^; Hey, better late than never. Just... you shouldn't try so much to be funny, it's just awkward most of the time, and you miss dialogues.

Where Eagle Dare
Magnum Force

You have NEVER seen eastwood? I demand that you spend the next month watching as many as you can.
I just came here to say it’s called a wig! He wears them to disguise his appearance. 😂
Great movie. You should also watch Clint in Absolute Power which is a great movie and Mystic Reaver which is a great movie Clint directed.
I recommend the dirty Harry film, "Sudden Impact". It's excellent, and is late in the Dirty Harry series. Eastwood is great in it.
Sudden Impact has Sandra Locke looking hot.
For your next Wolfgang Peterson film, try Outbreak.

Now you have to see Being John Malkovich
Blood work. Is a very good Eastwood movie
I think Frank’s actions are true to his character.
