Do I Always Have to Choose the "Best?"

  • Fr. Pine answers a surprisingly illuminating philosophy question: are we morally obligated to always do what's best? In other words, should we feel guilty for not doing the most extreme "good" thing we should do in every situation.
Pine reminds us that every moral decision should be made in context; that we should seek holiness in the sane and mundane. Remember, God gives us abundant resources to reach holiness. Seek Him more fully every day in your proper way and you will be spotless before Him.

Thank you so much Fr Pine! You really helped to shed light onto an anxiety of mine. I've been struggling with the whole concept of "how to attain heaven". It's been an anxiety of mine, and I've even been afraid to pick up the bible or listen to priests. I've been praying for the souls in purgatory, and my mother told me that it's Satan that causes such fears. It like this: I been afraid. Afraid of comitting sins. In the sense that - I've been too afraid to watch a movie or laugh at jokes or listen to a song or to talk because I've been afraid it will lead me to sin. Now - I can breathe. Thank You Fr. Pine and THANK YOU Matt!

Praying at all times isn't so much literally kneeling and reciting prayers non stop, it's more a habitual practice and piety of praying daily, regardless of how you *feel* about it; and and habitual practice of doing all things for the glory of God and recalling His presence as often as possible; ideally at all times.

This discussion calls to mind The Good Place, especially when you discussed the "buy local" question. I think many of us think of moral obligations as this web of consequences that we somehow have to untangle in order to consider any action good or evil. We are like the characters in The Good Place, constantly worrying and regretting how our decisions adversely affect people across the world from us. Now, it's not wrong to consider those people and care about them and try to do them good, but it's so essential to have a hierarchy in one's own life that places God, family, and vocation higher than those other concerns. We must discern whether our overly scrupulous purchasing decisions, or even prayer habits, are hurting our family financially or taking time away from them, for example. Very good and helpful discussion, Fr. Pine!

I'm realizing I'm replying to an old post, but I think he made a reference to condescension.
Which is a fascinating topic I suppose. Like in the Transfiguration, the two disciples up in the mount with Christ literally could not even raise their heads. Day to day, Christ limited his almost- terrifying greatness.
Edit: Maybe not? I'm not well versed on this. Condescension is about God reining in His greatness in His speech and appearance so as to be not only relatable, but possible to behold. The Son was not entirely contained in Christ, yet the Son was Christ. But the Son remained in Heaven the whole time as well. This is trinity stuff, and in fact required for all this to work.
An example of God's frightening power (1 Kings 19):
"And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And when Eli′jah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave."
The winds, the earthquakes, the fires, those were nothing. That whisper, however, terrified Elijah. Go read the whole passage if you wish.

Genuine question: why do we call priests “father?” God clearly condemns this in the Bible. I’m Catholic, but I feel that the church is becoming more and more like the Sanhedrin during Jesus’s time. The church is so focused on its own tradition and trying to fit into modern times than actually studying scripture and pursuing the highest truth.
    Matthew 23:9
    King James Version
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
I am grateful for any insight you may have. I’m just a fellow Christian seeking the truth.

I also recommend listening to the Catholic Culture Audiobooks podcast where you can listen to the earliest Christian’s such as Ignatious of Antioch, Justin Martyr, the didache, etc. I think you’ll find that Catholic tradition is the tradition of the apostles

Call no mere mortal man the origin and source of true authority and instruction. They are stewards of our Heavenly Father’s authority and instruction.
Is that helpful? And it’s not only Catholics that use a paternal title for clergy. It’s an apostolic tradition. Saint Paul in scripture tells a congregation to regard him as their father. “Pope” is “papa”. The Coptic church, which separated from Rome over 1,500 years ago, also has a “pope”. The Orthodox have patriarchs, another fatherly title.
If our clergy are focused on little insignificant problems while neglecting love of God and neighbor, we are becoming like the Scribes and Pharisees. Not because we call priests a paternal name.

    • @NTNG13

Jesus is speaking in hyperbole, otherwise all Catholics would be blind and have their hands cut off because He said to do that too. He used many different techniques in his teaching apart from parables, like hyperbole, allegory and even puns in the original aramaic. A strictly literal reading of Scripture is more of a protestant thing, the Church recognizes 4 ways to interpret a passage: literal, allegorical, moralistic and eschatological.

In my experience, it's better to stay at home on Sunday than go to the Mass where people/or priest only are agressive, have evil eye or nurse hatred in their hearts.

Well, every mass has the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist... that's literally the most amazing thing ever we can have, and this of course outweighs anyone else at mass. That being said, even so, we owe assent to our priests anyway and we also must not have evil suspicion towards others either, such as saying people who carry evil in their hearts, because this is either rash judgment, which would be sinful, or even if true, it would be gossip to tell others these people are bad. We also of course have our Sunday obligation, which means we are bound to, so can never say it's better to stay home, and finally, it's good to always receive our Lord in the Eucharist even from "bad" priests, because it witnesses to others that the sinfulness of a priest does not affect this and it witnesses to the priest that you recognise this and respect both his authority and ability to perform consecration regardless.
