I have a specific question about katana blade type. I prefer unokubi-zukuri katana. Are there any techniques specifically adapted for this type of katana that might not be widely known?
I like that he stressed the point that you want to be dodging the opponent's strike to effectively counter but the blade is in a blocking position as well.
Seki Sensei's movements and explanations of what he is doing (AND WHY!) are incredibly valuable for teaching and training. It's no wonder he is as renowned as he is. The emphasis he places on understanding why things are as they are, not just that they are, helps complete the picture for the student.
I always love the details that, Seki Sensei, explains for the techniques and katas. It's always the little details that will determine if you are successful or not.
That Shomen-uchi/Uke-Nagashi drill & its variations are classic - I first encountered it in the early 1990s doing Aiki-ken. It appeared again and again in other sword arts with pair-practices. And I used it while teaching a small group of students. Everyone I have encountered has always enjoyed this practice.
Hey Shogo Seki Sensei, one important lesson I learned from karate and Ryukyu Kobudo is the ability to practising kata by myself. I practice my kenjutsu kata, (both sides of omote kat of Katori Shinto Ryu) by myself so I can remember what I have been taught and don't lose it. It is a great way to visualise the combative applications hidden in the kata. Great introductory video, and I hope newcomers benefit from it.
It’s always good to practice them. I guarantee at one point, it will be engrained into your muscles fiber, and your muscles will remember them! Keep it up with the training.
That's why I always have a wakizashi in my obi, whether I'm using it or not that particular session. As there are no schools in my area, I had to learn all of this on my own, and from training videos that were inferior to your senseis.
I’m going to be buying a set of training gear from Tozando once I am back home from my trip and will be joining the online lessons, I am so stoked!! These videos are outstanding, thank you Seki-Sensei and thank you Shogo!!
Ukenagashi means "flowing block." However, it's important to note that it's more a deflection than a block, which allows for a quick counter-attack. The technique differs slightly according to applications. The important constant, as stated by Seki Sensei and my own MJER sensei, is not to actually "block" during ukenagashi. You primarily redirect your opponent's sword. On a separate point, these are great videos for training, but only in conjunction with practice in a dojo. Iaido/iaijutsu, like any martial art, required the pursuit (in vain, perhaps) of perfection of refinements. So it's important to have a trained observer or teacher to make observations and recommend corrections.
Priceless 👍 We cant get enough. This will really help with the online lessons, which are great. Thank you so much. And the t- shirts 👕 are really cool. Nice cutting Shogo 🤔 Do they do cutting in Asayama Ichiden Ryu? Take care. Stay safe 🙏 John and Kate
Watching seki sensei moving with his whole body is amazing.. truly a master.. you can learn so much just by watching him move.. thank you for sharing this..
Uki nagashi is a core principle in our system and it’s great to see a different system doing it almost exactly as we do. Suburb as well. Thanks for sharing.
I also come from an iaido background and, even without practicing a kenjutsu ryuha, came to the same conclusion as Seki-sensei about ukenagashi during my own practice. I would recommend to any practitioner of sword arts to try envision how their techniques would actually work against a resisting/attacking opponent and adjust them accordingly. Unless, of course, you can (safely) pressure-test them for real with a partner. If you don't have access to a partner, carefully observe paired kata or sparring footage online and analyze how techniques are applied in practice.
Thank you for this training video. ❤️ I remember doing some similar blocking and sparring when I was training with the wooden bokken sword several years back. But I also remember getting my hands hit. Always good to pay attention. 😄
I will move to japan and I want to learn with seki sensei. But I probably could not even join a dojo since I have tattoo. But still living in japan will be great!
Conceptually, ukenagashi is very similar to the hanging parry found in many european longsword treatises. I recommend studying the european hanging parry and how HEMA practitioners employ it in sparring, as it provides useful additional context for ukenagashi.
I don't have a katana but I do have a sword with a long enough handle to try these forms I did and it was very fun and need a katana so I can practice properly and thank you for the lesson
Like in Aiki Ken (which has its roots in Kashima_Shinto-ryu and other ryus), most important was body positioning. Moving to the side to clear the cut as you are countering and cutting back in the same action.
Hopefully your channel grows and Sensei can spread his arts and discipline around the world, i hope theres also a philosophy behind the art of the practice of this sword technique. Sensei can spread his thoughts and wisdom through words. Like the book of five rings of Miayamoto
Thank you for the video. It seems that I have some bad habbits. I have only trained in Aikido and even then, I didn't train in a long while. Every time I tried to train again, I just got sort of "homesick" for my Aikido-group. Do you have any tipps on how to get past such a roadblock?
Very educational video! I'm curious about the terminology in thr subtitles the teacher talks about blocking and parrying, which are generally synonymous. How does your style define each (or is it just bad autotranslation?). Thanks!

A small detail I'm wondering about. I often see when practitioners step in to do a straight cut, the cut comes just a moment after they step in. Wish to have a chance to practice and learn from sensei
So fortunate for those who are able to come to dojo
This is fantastic!
Honestly, I asked about at home training with a wooden sword just the other day!
You guys are awesome, thank you 🙏
I liked that kata so much! It looks so practical and fluid, just deflecting blades as simply as the ocean waves go to and from the beach.
Gratitude Honorable Teacher

Thank you for the lesson!
Thank you for this video sensei
He never crossed his wrists. The left-side parry would have, but he released with his left hand instead.
Thank you! Please, more of these videos! Looking forward to come in Japan 🙏
This helps a lot thank you seki sensei
very cool, thanks seki sensei!
I have been using a mirror and added a line of tape to represent my oppents attack to check that my hands are out if the way.
This is amazing! I actually can train, so this video is so helpful to me!🙏🙏🙏

Guys, I'd love to know what one calls the music that you use in these videos. What kind of music is it? I find it very soothing. Arigatō gozaimasu.
Masterful.
Hopefully your channel grows and Sensei can spread his arts and discipline around the world, i hope theres also a philosophy behind the art of the practice of this sword technique.
Sensei can spread his thoughts and wisdom through words. Like the book of five rings of Miayamoto
Insightful!
Thanks!
Amazing explanation. Question about the Zen Ken Ren. What should we change in the movement or the angle of the sword to make it real?
Brilliant!
Damn! I LOVE THIS!
A good video would be the katana vs various different weapons that where used during the onin war
thanks this is very helpfull i will prace now
Amazing
Please can you make a video of kenjutsu kata
good.
Thank u!
I always refer to Seki Sensei's dodge method as "Parting the Waterfall".
Got any tips for executing carrying with a katana, Seki Sensei?
>Home Kenjutsu Training Tutorial
Things like this are why you all are a cut above the rest. ありがとうござます先生!
Bought my own unsharpened sword just to train these techniques! Although I had a question: what should you do when fighting someone with a longer weapon than you?
For example if you had a katana and your opponent has a spear. Reach is often a defining factor of many duels in my experience.
Also curious about what to do when your opponent aims for your legs,is there a reliable counter to an attack like this?
Preferably something that does not target the face as my sparring groups disapprove of attacks to the head.
The European manuals recommend halfswording when fighting a spear.
With a katana we can't Block and push to side the enemy weapon with the Tsuba (like a sword) ?
A small detail I'm wondering about.
I often see when practitioners step in to do a straight cut, the cut comes just a moment after they step in. Some have explained that they use the momentum of their body to drive the sword. However, what I was taught was the cut and step are simultaneous because if one steps into the "danger-zone" (where both can contact each other) with a late cut, you will get killed or injured first.
Is this relevant I wonder?
Domo origato seki sun sensei san
I use a similar method in my own version of ken work in my own training in Tomiki Aikido... It just seems logical & obvious to me... Use the power of your opponents cut to add power to your own? 😉👐
