  • This is but a small sample of the scenic video I shot during my ride on Amtrak's California Zephyr from Sacramento to Chicago in early March of this year.
    Included is a complete run through Moffat Tunnel as seen from the rear car. Taking 10 minutes to traverse the 6 1/2-mile long tunnel, this is the time you may want to take that snack or bathroom break!

    I was surprised at how much of the Zephyr is single tracked.

    GREAT!!
    I liked the full time Moffat Tunnel sequence too.
    Thanks for not cutting it!

      Robert Steiner I only had two wishes: That there had been a way to turn off the overhead light outside that rear door. That messed with my focus on the camera going through there. And that the window had been a bit cleaner. But, sometimes, gotta work with what you have, lol! No way was I going to cut the tunnel, hehe!

    To me the P42 Genesis locomotive is the most beautiful out of all American locomotives. It's just so intimidating when you stand next to it, the videos don't show how it feels standing next to that beautiful powerful beast of a locomotive. The new Siemens diesel-electric locomotives that Amtrak bought looks like a cheap toy compared to the P42 Genesis. Amtrak should have rebuild all their P42's like Canada did instead of purchasing the Siemens locomotives, all though I think Amtrak had no choice but to by the Siemens locomotives because the government regulations require cleaner emissions diesel locomotives.

    Once while I was on the CZ riding in a sleeping car, I observed a live birth take place on the train, I’m not joking. Back in late March 2019, I was on the California Zephyr going from Davis to Glenwood Springs and on the train, there was pregnant 19 year old girl from SFSU traveling from Emeryville to Denver with her boyfriend. They normally fly home from college for holidays/breaks but because their due date was close (due date was April 5th and they departed on March 29th), they had to use the train since airlines do not allow women to fly in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. During the ride at 1 AM, the girl’s water broke and the attendant for our sleeping car (Justin Woods, a young guy in his early 20s) volunteered to deliver the baby since he had seen how it was done online. The girl agreed and Justin did so in which he went into the first aid kit, got his gloves on, then squeezed himself into the roomette to have the girl push while he caught the baby when she was born. The baby ended up being born on the train - a healthy baby girl in a ROOMETTE!!! It was a fabulous story and the girl, her newborn and boyfriend were taken off the train by paramedics at the next railroad crossing (train was in a remote location between Elko and Salt Lake City at the moment which required a helicopter ambulance to meet the train). As it is, I observed the whole thing as I was holding the girl’s left leg as well as recording this with her boyfriend’s phone. I’ve wondered - if you are female, suppose this happened to you where you (or your wife/girlfriend) suddenly went into labor on an Amtrak train and the train was going across a remote location at the moment. Would you at all be able to tolerate giving birth unmediated, while crammed into a Roomette, on a bed that was not flexible (unlike in the hospital), on a train that speeding up to 90 MPH, the baby’s umbilical cord having to stay attached to you until you got to a hospital (no scissors/clamps on the train), and the person delivering your baby is an Amtrak conductor/attendant with no medical training or license of any kind??? Seriously, this girl was incredibly brave and was lucky that there were no complications, PLUS it only took 20 minutes for her to push the baby out (water broke at 1 AM, and the baby was born at 1:22 AM) What do you think of all this!!!???

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  4 года назад +2

      Wow, that's an incredible story! Good that everything fell into place for the young lady and her boyfriend and she had a healthy baby! :) Kudos to the sleeper attendant for coming to the rescue too!

      +trainman1971 Aw, because I am taking a trip from EMY to DEN in December, and I wanted to know what the ride looked like from a coach seat. When you buy a roomette, do you get a reserved coach seat as well, or just a "first come first serve" seat or I am assuming lounge/dining car seating.

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  8 лет назад

      +Phoenix Eterna
      Ahhh, well, the roomette is reserved when you make the reservation and that is your seat and bedroom for the trip. Dining car meal prices are included in the cost. Dinner is taken by reservation, but breakfast and lunch is first-come, first-serve, and of course the lounge car is open seating as well.

    your calling it scenic, i suppose that if your coming from a sprawling industrial area, that to you, this is scenic. but what ime noticing, are trees needing more water, and you wonder why you had raging forest fires. you think, its always raining in little old england, but our scenic, really is scenic by comparison, and more history than you can throw a stick at, with all that snow around, is it the middle of winter? if so that explains the trees, but ive also noticed it, when it wasnt winter

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  6 лет назад

      Pat Rafferty It was too dark to shoot by then. We were almost 3 hours late at that time. I had enough trouble keeping an un-blurred lens in the tunnel, thanks to the light in the doorway of the car.

    I'm only 10 minutes into the video but am finding the frequent zooming in and out distracting. Maybe there's less of that later on. I'd personally prefer less of that.

    • @aeoliankid1
      @aeoliankid1 8 лет назад

      Right, Tom, the zooming ruins the realism of a train ride, and distorts the feeling of speed. See the German and Austrian DB videos, and the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) ones for a non-zooming experience. Otherwise, this is a really nice video.

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  8 лет назад

      With this video not putting the focus on the speed and more on the scenery and passing trains, and curve shots, the zooming was a necessary evil. Glad you enjoyed it otherwise.
      I've been looking for the CTA ones where they did head-end rides on their entire "L" network, line by line, but I can't find them anymore. Not sure if they have been taken down or not.

    What are you talking about did I say Hillary Clinton has to do with the railroad

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  6 лет назад

      You mentioned Hillary Clinton in your previous post way down, and the reply was because she has absolutely nothing to do with the subject, content, or post of this video. Nothing political to be gleaned from here. Your post, quoted:
      "liberals you 're not missing anything without Hillary Clinton as your president she would be a massive threat to national security humanity democracy and what not"
      The reply is basically asking you what does Hillary have anything to do with the subject of this post, in this case, railroads. And the answer is: Absolutely nothing. And nobody had mentioned her in the first place before you did.
      Nothing to do with liberals, nothing to do with conservatives, nothing to do with politics. Just a me filming the sights out of a train window as I head home from a vacation trip.

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  6 лет назад

      And your original post that started it all, way down, again, totally non-relevant to the post:

    • @trainman1971
      @trainman1971  8 лет назад +4

      I was in a sleeper, so food cost was not a consideration. That being said, I've been lucky enough to have never had a bad meal in an Amtrak dining car in 28 years of Amtrak travel. Even my experience in the Cross Country Cafe on the Capitol Limited, while not up to full dining car par, was at least decent.
      Now the cafe car offerings, on the other hand... with some exceptions, it's all the same stuff that I can only stand in limited doses. And that is why I'm not going to ever use the Silver Star for more than a day trip to North Carolina if the need arises... since there is no longer a diner on that train.
