- It was a night full of emotions at the Greenwood High School graduation. Seniors walked the stage to get their diplomas but it was the special guests who made the night even more memorable.
The Greenwood Class of 2012 had many reasons to celebrate on Friday night.
Seniors anxiously awaited their high school diplomas while special stories played throughout the night.
Senior Jeff Hankins was diagnosed with leukemia a couple years ago. Since then he's been in and out of treatment, missing his senior year but not his big day.
"It's amazing," Jeff said. "It feels great you know."
Students wore orange ribbons to support their classmate.
"Just don't give up, keep on fighting," Jeff said.
Jeff's brother couldn't be more proud. He shaved his head to honor his special graduate and their mother who is battling breast cancer.
"He's been bald before so I'm doing it for him and for my mom," Aaron Hankins said. "It feels amazing knowing that my brother is gonna walk the stage, it just lights me up."
And another brother was full of nerves during the ceremony.
"I'm excited because I just talked to my parents and she has no idea I'm even coming," Mitchell Adams said.
Adams is a sailor and flew in from Norfolk, VA to surprise his sister, Kaya.
"It just feels good to be a part of it, it's kind of a blessing so," Adams said.
The excitement of graduation turned into overwhelming joy.
"I'm speechless, I'm so excited," Kaya said. "Of course he told me he was gonna be out. I was like what the heck where is he and all of a sudden I see him walking up the stairs and I'm like oh my gosh he's actually here."
The special guests made graduation a night these seniors will never forget.
"Oh this topped it, oh my gosh, I don't have any words," Kaya said. "I'm so mad at you right now!"
When we hear all of the bad news about today's youth, I listen to a story like this and see hope and greatness. I see wonderful family members and graduating seniors who are good people, who will become leaders. I see a school who has banded together for one student fighting an illness. I see a lovely young woman happy to be reunited with her brother. You are champions and make America great! God bless.
Its so cue, and i love how she pushes the guy away
she missed her bro that much
I love how she just pushes the guy handing her the diploma.
Once you start watching these videos, you cannot stop. I might cry myself skinny, lol.
For those of you wondering, this is Greenwood High School in west Texas near Midland and Odessa. I know because Kaya is actually a friend of mine. This was my freshman year and Kaya was a big help to me in my first year of high school. We were in band together and she helped me a lot with my marching. It was amazing watching her run across that stage to her brother. We are such a blessed country to have such brave men and women fighting for our freedom.
Awesome, shipmate. Well done.
Welcome home sir and thank you for everything. To the family fighting cancer i hope you both beat it and live a long life.
Great video. Nice to see how special your graduation was. We love you, Kaya and Mitchell!
Love, Uncle B. and Aunt D.
this is the best story ever. LOVE IT
Love how she more or less push the princibal out of the way to get to her brother.
It seems like that, but she wouldn't "push" the principal, I think it was planned by her parents and telling the school staff that their son will surprise his sister on graduation day
Lol I wish I loved my brother that much.
She is gorgeous. Congrats on your Graduation
your sister is so beaUTIFUL
next time you see a soldier weather it be a marine, navy, army or airman just walk up to them and give them a handshake or a high 5 or even a fist bump. they are putting thier lives on the line for us so please respect them.
Well done son. Welcome home sir.
i'd like to give Jeff a hug too
nice job mitchell and kaya thats what suprises r for love you all and may god bless you all
How a family deals with a mom with breast cancer and a son with leukemia is beyond me...That's just unbelievably hard
I love how she just pushed the principal out her way like "get the hell the hell out of my way I'm trying to get to my brother." Hilarious
