The DO35 is king that’s for sure. When we got our new caravan home the first thing I did was ditch the ball coupling. Never looked back 2.5 years later.
Look into the ozhitch. Very easy to connect (self aligns the last little way), and is a VERY solid, completely visible primary connection and secondary lock. Also can eliminate towball / coupling rattle. As a side benefit because they are relatively uncommon, it makes it more difficult for old mate to knock off your trailer in the middle of the night. And not stupidly expensive.
I am not aware of any alko fitting with a pin, I know they make an “off road coupling” that utilises a tow ball. That said there are several companies that make “hitch pin” type couplings, I am not sure of their details the most common by far is the DO35 and thats the one I am obviously most familiar with.

ALKO also make a pin type fully articulating coupling which you can tell is connected correctly. Significantly less expensive than the DO35.

G’day. Very informative thank you. Have you found the interaction between vehicle and van on the road much better? Cheers 😎
During towing I have not noticed any difference
Was the $400 total cost for van hitch and tow vehicle tongue?
Sorry for the tardy response it was for the hitch only, which includes the tow ball / pin that mounts onto you existing tow tongue.
