My dog was caught in a steel trap for 4 days after she ran away from our back yard. She ended up being released by the trapper because the trap was set illegally, and coming back home with a shattered and mangled lower leg and gangrene. There's no way she could have pulled out of the trap herself. They had to amputate above the knee. She's 14 years old now and has lived as a tripod for 10 years. Trappers disgust me.

So, you just spent a minute using a trap to slice up vegetables and the most brittle bones you could get a hold of? They definitely hurt, but this blows it wayyy out of proportion.

It would surprise you to know that these traps actually can break the bones of animals they catch. Either instantly or soon/eventually after being trapped, depending on the animal. This isn't really a bad video

    • @lastonefishing
      @lastonefishing 7 лет назад +7

This is a flat out horrible video. Why would a trapper, whose goal is to hold the animal until they arrive, strive for broken and chewed off legs? You would never catch anything. I know, logic doesn't jive with the anti trapping agenda, but it could help you out if you seek it. Yes, if you MISUSE a trap that is far oversized for the species you set for, you could break a bone - but rational people don't hunt squirrels with deck-mounted 105mm guns, either...

This kind of traps, even if they were of normal strength, are actually illegal in my parts of the world because they are not selective and effective enough (we exclusively use live-catch box-type traps for certain small predators like foxes)
Mainly because we have way to high levels of people roaming through nature, who would in turn frighten the caught animal and make the chances of it hurting itself just too high.

    • @chonky2129

Many different strengths and that’s what most people get wrong when they assume that all types of these traps are inhumane. There’s lightweight rubberized versions now that don’t even cut off circulation and people still cry foul.

This trap is not up to standards. You have bought a trap that a) does not have any rubber padding or a wide enough jaw to disperse pressure and b) does not leave any space for smaller animals to get out. A trapper can not leave an animal in this for more than 24 hours. The trap hold the foot ONLY with minimal damage. It also has a few swivels to prevent the animal from breaking or twisting its foot. Also, this is a huge trap sized for a large animal. "Steel-jaw trap" is not proper vocabulary. This is a coil-spring foot hold trap. Do your research on state regulations before assuming anything.

That's steel jaw traps and I do not use that type of leg hold but use similar one's with padded jaws with the same power available and have caught pigeons with them by the feet unintentionally and when I have released the bird (was one of my own) pigeons had no ill effects or broken bones so I do not find them to be inhumane or barbaric. They are more selective on animal to be trapped and to me much better than a snare.

Those are illegal in many states however i would have no problem putting my hand in a lingspring foothold. Instead of getting angry id rather educate all who would care to listen.

Traps are not cruel.....I have caught myself on accident and on purpose many times and have never been hurt....Foothold traps apply constant pressure to the ankle of the animal and hold it there humanely until the trapper arrives early in the morning.....However....a trapper himself can be cruel.....if he leaves his traps too long or if he doesn't set it right....then yes....animals can be harmed...But that is like with everything....
Are cars cruel? No the drivers can be stupid....Are guns themselves cruel? No the user can be dumb...
See what I mean? It's all up to the user of the device that determines how it is viewed.....And tell you what...most trappers do it right...and are humane....There are only a few who ruin the reputation and image of the others....who strive to do what's best for the environment....like me

Actually it's a mountain lion trap. Believe it or not, wolf traps spring even softer.
Further more, leg traps don't get the chance to fully fire and thus exert all of their potential energy. At best if you have your set right, the trap will only fire 60% of its total energy upon closing.

Traps are designed to be just as powerful as they need to be for the species they are designed for. Using a wolf trap on a fox is just not appropriate, which is the equivalent of what you are trying to show here...Celery is the equivalent of a leg bone?... It is inflammatory drivel like this that propagates the ignorance surrounding trapping. Please, write us a scientific paper that proves the similarities between ball point pen plastic and celery as it relates to the density and composition of bone, surrounded by muscle and connective tissue, before portraying nonsense.

If he was concerned about the truth, he would have used offset traps which are the new humane version of the leg hold trap.
My beloved Heeler pup accidently got herself caught in a modern day wolf trap, an MB750 offset. She didn't like it but was not yelping and when released, didn't even have a limp. That is the truth, not manipulative propaganda.
