DIY Hexagon Wall Shelf

- I built this hexagon shelf out of old barn wood which gave it a nice rustic look. I built it to hold essential oils but you could use it to hold any home decor. 27 inches wide x 23 1/2 inches tall x 3 1/2 inches deep.
I am not an expert, just a regular woodworker, sharing my experiences with you. This is meant for entertainment purposes only.

GREAT IDEA of putting the painters tape underneath the joints to keep the glue off of your table top, really awesome idea!!!
Very nice. I'll give it a try this week. THanks
Taping on the outside is the right technique. A better way to glue end grain is to put on a "paint coat", wait a few minutes for it to suck in and then put on more glue and assemble.
Thanks for the tip
Beautiful end project. I'm sure you friend was delighted.
Perfect size and love the wood color! This is exactly what I wanted. ♥️
You totally need to make one. They are so useful and look amazing on the wall. Happy building 😊
@@AroundtheHouse working at it 😊
Great job 🤘
Nice job! You built it using the same method I normally use when building an oil rack: one piece at a time. That really makes for perfectly fitted shelves.
A few of notes (I know, you didn't ask... forgive me for over-stepping):
1. 3-1/2" deep seems a bit much for oils, unless the user wants to double-stack the bottles. I make mine out of 1x2 and the bottles fit perfectly.
2. 3" spacing on the shelves seems a bit tight. especially if you're building the shelves so deep. I suppose it depends on the bottles. I build my racks with a 3-3/4" shelf spacing.
3. Although I use 3/4" thickness for the outside border, I use 1/2" wood for the shelves. then I glue a 1/4" square dowel the the front edge of each shelf. That helps keep the oil bottles in place, without hiding the labels, and brings the shelf face totals to 3/4", to match the border.
I SO wish I had a planer. I could do so much more with reclaimed wood, like you did. I currently build my racks with all store-bought wood, and for one this size and shape, the total for materials comes to over $60. Ugh. :)
Keep up the great work!
These are great tips, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. It’s nice to hear from someone who builds a lot of these. 😊
I’m not a pro what I did to mine, I glued 3 at a time n brad nailed then connected the last 4 ends together. Nice video
Thanks 😊
Great project and a good way to recycle old wood for a rustic look!
Nailed it! Great idea for re-using some old wood.
I wish I could have such wood at my backyard here in Kazakhstan :-)
I am pretty lucky to be in an area where so many woods are commonly grown.
Nice job, I use clear packing tape for odd angle glue ups you can pull the tape hard and tight and comes off easy
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing.
Really loved the job. Thanks for taking the time to share your process.
You’re welcome, thank you for the nice comment 😀
Amazing project!!! Everything is great: the idea, the finishing, and of course a very useful artistic shelf!!! I do love it so much!!! Congratulations!!! And keep going this way!!!
Thank you for the kind words Galo, much appreciated 😀
Awesome job!
Brandon Evans thank you 😊
Nice job. Check out the Merele Band Clamps. You will need a few extra corner pieces but they are the BEST for situations like that. Enjoy your videos too.
That's a great suggestions. I am always looking for new clamps and haven't heard of them. Thank you for taking the time to comment. 😊
Looks great. Well done
Thanks Wayne 😊

That is just awesome!
Thanks for commenting Roger!
I just need to figure out how to hang a single rope shelf from the wall (Landlord is not cool with hooks in the ceiling) But the tips you shared will work perfectly ! Thanks for the awesome video! I feel like I could do this myself, but it helps give my husband feel useful when I ask ^^ He loves his tools, but doesn't share my enthusiasm for DIY projects XD 1:21
Your welcome. Happy building to you and your husband. 😀
Can we use a Brad nailer to keep shelf in place as glue dries
You could use a strap clamp that you use on a trailer or something
That's a great idea Diane. Thank you so much for the comment 😀
Cut a slot in both ends for a biscuit. Use a biscuit joint
That’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing
It looks really good .where do you buy ur wood tools from
Usually Craigslist or used from other woodworkers I know if they are pricey tools. For basic tools I get them on Amazon or from Home Depot since it’s close.
I have a question is that cedar or redwood looks a lot like redwood i made a crescent moon shelf and the wood looked like that one
Is there a link to the plans at all? Can't find the blog link?
