One of the responses was for the family to bring in soup and it was the incorrect answer. at the 5:16 mark you explained why 4 is not the correct answer but I am still having difficulty on why that is not correct because that was my initial answer. I thought interpreters are always the correct answer.
Look at the wording. It does not say “use an interpreter” It says “interact with the interpreter for all communication” and that is wrong. Even when you use an interpreter you have to look at and interact with the patient.
For the question regarding the patient who is not fluent in English, wouldn't the translator be the first choice and if no translator is available, then we use gestures and pictures?

@@jacobmicu3945 the reason that it is wrong is because you are supposed to be interacting with the patient, not the interpreter. The interpreter is a means for you to communicate with your primary focus which is the patient. Even when you are using an interpreter, you are supposed to face the patient and look at the patient when you are speaking (not the interpreter). Why? Nonverbal communication is way more important than verbal, so while you are making eye contact and speaking to your patient (while the interpreter interprets) you are watching your patient's body language and assessing for subtle cues just like you would any other patient. You absolutely can not direct your attention to the interpreter as it the patient is a bystander. It is all about the patient, the interpreter is just the vehicle/means to communicate with your focus which is always the patient. Does this make sense?
