OMG.....I am a newbie to quilting. Recently bought my first jelly roll and you can see the confusion in my head. There's a lot of video tutorials, but it made me more confused. Now I found your own tutorials and I enjoyed very much. Showing the mistakes and how to correct them is also a plus. Thank you.
I agree with Katie Bruder, I have watched a couple different videos on making jelly roll quilts and this was the easiest one to follow. Thank you so very much for sharing your video.
before seeing your tutorial i Made a jelly roll quilt using polka dots as well, i was laughing because i thought i was the only one that was that in love with polka dots, your tutorial was amazing thank you.
My grand daughter has followed this tutorial... she is 14 and sewing for the first time... she's so excited how the quilt is transforming right before her eyes!! Thank you for the instructions
Thank you so much. I'm teaching myself to sew. Your video is great. I've watched many others. But they were much to fast and did not have the same camera angle. Thanks again
Thank you so much for your tutorial. The other ones out there are too quick and hard to follow. Thabks to you I am making my first quilt! I will put the picture up here if someone can tell me how to do that! It's my boyfriend and I's two year anniversary . He can buy anything he wants so I thought, why not make him something special? Now hell have a new quilt all thanks to you!
Thanks for posting this!! Was great to see this from a beginners point of view as I'm really wanting to take up quilting. I've never heard of jelly roll quilting before and it definitely looks like the perfect project for a beginner : )
Nice video and good explanation. Great machine too! One difference I notice between this and others is, after all the strips are sewn together and before joining the first set, I've seen other tutorials where about 18 inches is cut off before joining. What that does is offset the strip seams and prevent them from being close to the edge.
I cut all my strips in half, sewed a white squares on one end, then sewed them together. Seems the white squares add just enough length to the whole strip to help offset the ends. Don't know how, or care. But my white squares are evenly spaced, and I didn't have to match any seams in the whole top!
I so enjoyed this video. I made my first jelly roll today. I got a little flustered when at the end it was twisted and I was a little nervous about the cutting. I took a chance and just cut across the fabric. It worked out just fine. Looking forward to finishing it.
Two years ago I taught myself how to make quilts using RUclips videos. I've been sewing since I was 10 but two years ago I made my first quilt and it was a quilt using the jelly roll method, only I didn't use a jelly roll. I used a small portion of the 8 years worth of scraps I had built up and was storing for later use, so all the strips where various different lengths so I didn't need to do the "cut 18 inches off" thing. But it was a lot of fun and I have since made about a dozen quilts of about every size and used different methods. And I can confirm that it did take me longer than the quilters on RUclips to make my first quilt since it was, again, my first quilt. But since I had been sewing for 8 years (about 10 years now, I'm 20) I got the hang of it very quickly.
Thanks for showing where & how u stitch or cut. So many other tutorials do not show you how, and if you've never done it, it helps to actually see it! So thank you!!!!
Thank you for such a lovely patient full explained video ... Other videos we're little confusing but this was a pice of cake ! FYI love the turquoise machine color and the stained wood ... Surely a beautiful Christmas gift. Do post if you have any other quilts in making. 👍🏼😊.
fun video...showed what to do if you forget to cut off the 18 inches before sewing the first two strips together.. Add some boarders if you want a larger quilt top. I had my granddaughters sew jelly roll quilt tops just this past Christmas when they were her for a visit.
I love your instruction video. I'm new at quilting and bought some gorgeous jelly rolls but wasn't sure what to do with them. I'm going to try your quilt. Thanks so much. Happy Quilting!
I really enjoyed your jelly roll tutorial. I'm really going to give this a try. But I'm going to cut my own jelly roll strips wider probably 4 1/2 to 6 and 1/2 inch strips and use your method of sewing them together because the fabric I'm using has a larger print and I want to be able to see the print better but your method can be used on any fabric it's really awesome thank you for putting this tutorial out there and yes it is an easy one to follow
Thank you! This is my first sewing project after failing to get the hang of my sewing machine years ago and being forever depressed about it. I'm terribly impractical, and yes, I sewed a few together the wrong way and accidentally wound the bobbin reel instead of the bobbin, but thanks to you I did it! Step by step. Most videos assume you're basically competent which clearly I'm not! Thanks for breaking it down slowly and being really relaxed if you made an error, it was inspiring when I did. I now have a lovely quilt top. Now I just need to work out how to sew a border without sewing myself to my chair...
I have two variations to offer people who enjoy this method but prefer smaller, scrappier pieces in their quilts instead of long swaths of color. After completing the Jelly Roll Race top, cut it apart (GASP!) either perpendicular to your strips, or on the bias, into strips as wide as the originals. Then re-start the Jelly Roll race using these newly created strips. One variation gives you a wonderful quilt full of dancing scrappy squares, the other gives you excitingly scintillating angles rippling through your quilt. The bias version is an excellent place to use the Continuous Bias Binding method for cutting the strips, if you know how to do that.
@@kellycluett9593 I wish I could show you! I don't have a clue how to upload a photo or video though. You're going to have to just try it yourself to see. I suggest doing a little sampler version out of a few small scraps rather than a full-sized quilt.
Fun! I would definitely press as you go as I find it easier to press in sections being careful not to stretch the cross grain edges, rather than waiting until it is complete.
thanks for the great tutorial! i ordered my first jelly roll and am so exited to do my very first jelly roll quilt 😊 how big is the finished quilt top? it's really beautyful!
And yes your sewing machine is one to be owned it looks like it's in good shape from what I can see I learned to sew on a old singer similar to what I think yours might look like it was black and had 1929 printed on it I think in Gold letters with a foot treadle it was my great-grandmother's it was a beauty I would be interested in seeing a post of what your machine looks like from a front view and a little bit of history about it that would be awesome if you could do that thanks again
Cool old machine, and fun video. Those older machines have such quality! I have been sewing for over 50 years and I like to make jelly roll quilts. They are simple and so fun. They turn out so bright and pretty!!! I was just working on one today of bright jewel tones, with mermaids on it, for a little 4 year old girl I know who doesn't have much. I hope she enjoys it. My son found an old machine in the shed of his "new" house, and I took it. I have to fool with it and see if it works. I have also discovered "book pillows." They are fun and easy to make for kids. Little kids just seem to love them. Check them out and have fun sewing!
Thank you for showing this way of making a jelly roll quilt. It was fun and entertaining and it encourages me to try one myself. Thanks again. Greetings from Germany☺️
your video was much easier to understand than a few others I have watched. I am working on my first quilt, not using jelly rolls, and this type of quilt would have definitely been easier for me to try than the one I am currently working on.
At about 16:25 the video shows why you are supposed to cut 18 inches off the end after sewing the strips together on the first go round. At that point you only have a single strip where you cut off the 18 inches. I never understood why you would do that as most people just tell you to cut it off, without explaining why. Thanks
They all say it doesn’t take very long. They do actually. :) too true. And just remember too, some of the video demonstrations use industrial machines, that sew a lot faster than domestic machines. If it takes you 12 months, it doesn’t matter, so long as you have fun.
You're a beginner? My gosh, job well done! I'm a beginner and very nervous about starting a jelly roll race quilt. Looks easy but looks can be deceiving. Thanks for sharing.
No need to be nervous! It was so much fun to make. It's takes a lot longer as a beginner, but the straight stitching with the strips already cut make it super easy :)
I am also a beginner and just learning to do all this. Your video is very helpful for me it looks fun and simple. I am just wondering what the next step is for the actual quilt to be made.
heatherrn65 Thanks for watching! It was a great first quilt for me and I really enjoyed making it :) After I finished the quilt top, I used a fusible cotton batting between the top and a backing. The fusible cotton batting means you just use your iron to stick everything together, which I found easy. Then I quilted everything together following the straight lines of the fabric and used the fancy stitches I had on my machine. I then squared up the quilt and added a binding. Sorry, but I didn't film the rest of the quilt part! I'll try to remember to do that part the next time :)
Hi. Really liked your sewing video. Keep up the great tutorials! Walmart has some Christmas honeybun rolls for $5.97. Not the best quality, but great for practice. I started a new pattern on my own and not ashamed of my mistakes. At least I was brave enough to start something new. Happy Thanksgiving and Blessings!
I believe this makes the size of a twin. I would like to make one but more of a queen size. If I sewed two jelly rolls together and followed the same directions would the quilt top be the size of a queen or would it just be longer? I wasn't sure of I should just to two seperate ones and just sew them together
If you put the first end under the needle and presser foot to hold it, then straighten out the whole strip First, you Won't Ever have issues with twisting. I know it takes time, but it is well worth it!! Then you won't have waste because of jagged edges. I don't understand the need to see how fast one can sew this together. The whole top is pretty quick anyway. But taking extra time to keep things straight in the process will be more satisfying in the end.😊
I must say I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I have seen others "How to do jelly roll tops", but this is the first time watching someone do it for the first time. I'm just starting to sew again after many years of being inactive and I want to make quilts; and this one did look like an easy one to start out with. I had my doubts that it would go as quickly as other videos made it seem. Frankly, I think that it will probably take me longer than you to finish. I had wondered about at the very beginning of seeing these kinds of jelly rolls quilts, how you'd keep the strips from being twisted at the end; no one ever mentioned it in the other quilt videos. Nice to know it is just a matter of cutting the ends and untwisting it. I do have a couple of questions. What was the size of the binding? How large was the finished quilt? I read in your response to heatherrn65 that you has essentially "stitched in the ditch" to quilt, but used the fancy stitches that came with your machine. Any chance you could show us what that looked like? It sounds like a really great idea. I really liked your choice of the fabric pattern of dots, I thought it came out really well. Thank you for sharing this.
AthenaSchroedinger Hi Athena. Thank you! My binding was 2.5" wide and then I folded that in half (ironed it) and then sewed it onto the quilt. I ended up with 1/2" on each side of the finished quilt. This quilt was made with one jelly roll and ended up about 63" x 47". Here are a couple of photos of the quilting: i.imgur.com/Pr6yGZ7.jpg?1 i.imgur.com/e5G8Cg9.jpg?1 As there's a lot of color and pattern on the top, you can see the different stitches much better on the back of the quilt. This was a super fun and easy quilt to start with, so a great quilt to start with :) Cheers!
Do you have to use just 1 jelly roll? Can I use more strips and make a larger quilt? Total newbie and I would like to make a queen size for my son! Thanks for any help! :-)
+Deborah Ring I haven't tried a queen size version of this jelly roll quilt yet, but I have found this amazing and detailed explanation/formula for making a queen size. You basically need to make two separate (and different sized) jelly roll quilt tops and sew them together. weefolkart.com/jelly-roll-race-quilt-changing-quilt-size-determining-number-strips/ The whole article explains why and how and is worth the read, but this is the summary paragraph: "Your queen sized Jelly Roll Race Quilt, with horizontal strips, and no border, will take 64 strips for the initial quilt + 32 strips for the add-on section = 96 strips need for the whole Jelly Roll Race Quilt top. So you need 3 fabric jelly rolls (with 40 fabric strips in each jelly roll) to make this quilt." Cheers!
I think you could make it any size you want by sewing a lot of strips together, but not cutting them until they reach the length you want. It would take several jelly rolls. You could look up the measurements of a queen size quilt and go from there. I don't think that would be for a beginner, tho, if you are one. You don't have to sew them in the "chain piecing" manner, just sew several together until you get the length you want, then do it again and again and again. I hope that makes sense.
Very nice. Thanks to show troubleshooting for twisted ends ( which was a sure question for me ). Would you please tell if those 18 inches will not get cut , will there be any issue?
very glad to see your tutorial for beginners, but i want to buy these precut fabric like jelly roll ,layer cakes & charm squares, pls send me the name of the store or shop so i can order..im frm the philippines 62 yrs old & a retired nurse..thank you very much..i have an fb account..i hope you dont mind.
I'm clearly an idiot, and still don't understand, once you've made your strip and sew it in half, long ways, when and where do you make the cuts after this???
Angela McAlister Hi Angela. I haven't tried a queen size version of this jelly roll quilt yet, but I have found this amazing and detailed explanation/formula for making a queen size. +charlotte barnes This is a great website that shows how to calculate what you need for other size quilts - weefolkart.com/jelly-roll-race-quilt-changing-quilt-size-determining-number-strips/

Depends on your sewing skills. The people I watched said that it takes about an hour, but as this was my first one, it took much longer than that. I also didn't finish the quilt in one day.
I think if I were to do it in an hour it would be full of mistakes. I have been quilting for a long time. Take your time and do it right and enjoy the process.
I liked your video because you shot the video from where we would sew. It did take more than an hour. I wish you would add that you need to cut the 18" off once you sew all the strips together to the beginning of the video. I should have watched the whole video before starting to sew. Thanks!
I love the way she didn’t edit out her errors. Makes me feel a lot better lol.

Very interesting. Thank you for being brave enough to make your first one on video. Watch Donna Jordan from Jordan Fabrics.
Well done and very helpful! I love the viewpoint of someone not as experienced as the professionals.
Before you sew the first ends together, you need to take about 18 inches off of one side. That way they will be staggered strips.

Here are a couple of photos of the quilting:

As there's a lot of color and pattern on the top, you can see the different stitches much better on the back of the quilt.
This was a super fun and easy quilt to start with, so a great quilt to start with :)
Cheers!
mrs gooses goodies Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it. I also like how those stitches looked as well. Very clever way to quilt.

The whole article explains why and how and is worth the read, but this is the summary paragraph:
"Your queen sized Jelly Roll Race Quilt, with horizontal strips, and no border, will take 64 strips for the initial quilt + 32 strips for the add-on section = 96 strips need for the whole Jelly Roll Race Quilt top. So you need 3 fabric jelly rolls (with 40 fabric strips in each jelly roll) to make this quilt."
Cheers!
Thank you so much. I was able to fallow you. You are a awesome teacher.
Brilliant tutorial thank you

Looking this Vidio..my question have any answer..thanks you very much..it's so clearly....big hug's from Indonesia.......
The rolls of fabric Ive seen only has 20 strips.......where do you get the bigger rolls?
+Sandra Rue I usually search for "jelly roll fabric" on Amazon. Here's a similar spotted pattern to what I used - amzn.to/24VVJ0V
Sandra Rue if you want beautiful fabric I recommend Missouri Star Quilt Co. and Fat Quarter Shop on line. They have sooo much variety!
How can you make it wider, like for a queen size bed?
I think you could make it any size you want by sewing a lot of strips together, but not cutting them until they reach the length you want. It would take several jelly rolls. You could look up the measurements of a queen size quilt and go from there. I don't think that would be for a beginner, tho, if you are one. You don't have to sew them in the "chain piecing" manner, just sew several together until you get the length you want, then do it again and again and again. I hope that makes sense.
What size does this quilt make please
My finished quilt was about 63" x 47" with about a 1/2" border.
Also, is your machine a cog machine?
How many jelly rolls does it take to make a queen sized quilt top
Angela McAlister Hi Angela. I haven't tried a queen size version of this jelly roll quilt yet, but I have found this amazing and detailed explanation/formula for making a queen size. You basically need to make two separate (and different sized) jelly roll quilt tops and sew them together.

Great job
how could you directions for a twin size quilt
+charlotte barnes This is a great website that shows how to calculate what you need for other size quilts - weefolkart.com/jelly-roll-race-quilt-changing-quilt-size-determining-number-strips/
can you just iron it because i try to cut it and it just came apart
What size does it make please
My finished quilt was about 63" x 47" with about a 1/2" border.
40 strips makes a quilt top how big?
My finished quilt was about 63" x 47" with about a 1/2" border.
How many times do you cut the quilt for a twin size bed?
So, can I just clear this up, once you join the rolls together, you cut off 18 inches, before sewing the ends the second time?
Youre actually suppose to cut the 18" off the first piece. She said she forgot that step.
De cuánto es el largo de cada tira que viene en el rollo y el ancho también esto es para las que van a usar tiras hechas en casa, creo que son importantes estás medidas.Hablo español por eso no sé si lo dijo en la explicación.Gracias.
You have to flip the first on one the bottom
How long does it take to make
Depends on your sewing skills.
Thanks!
