When I first heard this song , I jumped up and started dancing . Later on during the day , I was at the bus stop . And I started singing this song , and slapping my leg to my surprise the people around me were feeling my vibes and grooving along with me . Let see action ! I felt so alive . And that's alright by me .
Pete is the Beethoven of our time, and getting to witness him playing his works in concert is like getting to witness Beethoven or Mozart playing their own piano sonatas in person. Those geniuses lived and died before audio or video recording was available, unfortunately. So every time I have gotten to see The Who, I am fully aware of how precious the experience is, and I'm so grateful to be alive in this genius's time on earth. Long live rock, and long live Pete!
saw them at the garden, it was right after keith moon died, unfortunately, but they still rocked i'm thinking 78, one of the loudest concerts i ever went to
I had the immense privilege of touring with the Who in the summer of 1976 as their opening act with my band, LAW. I saw them up close and personal for 8 shows and got to know them all. I never thought of it quite this way, but yea...you're right. Makes me feel all the more privileged and thankful for the experience.
It tis Pistol Pete without the band, what a wide range of transitions in this song, that's what makes it special; and he played all the instruments, not many solo artists do that (McCartney did in his first solo).
I remember in the early 80s I had some people over and this girl asked if I had any Pete Townshend in my record collection. So I pulled out this album and she said "what??" She was expecting Empty Glass . Nobody hardly knew this album existed!
It's just that the kids listening to Empty Glass and Chinese eyes just didn't know or care about music that came out of the Woodstock era, which encompassed the early 70s as well as the sixties.
Follow the money. It might have diluted Who sales. Your flu shot works on Covid. But it doesn’t generate the same cash. ‘Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!’
I recorded this off the radio 40 years ago in late '72, loved the song and got the album. It's become part of the bedrock of my musical and spiritual life; to this day I never tire of listening to it. Thank you Pete T.!
The last two minutes of this great song is possibly the best musical expression of creative, bold group action ever made. The instrumental arrangement throughout is incredible.
Bought it when it came out. Who's Next came out around the same time so this one was overshadowed by everyone except devout Who fans. Great album! Still have it & sounds great on the old turntable.
Thank you for posting this, and the info in the description. In 1972, when $1 of each sale of this album was given to charities, the album price was about $4. $1 in 1972 is about $5.65 today (2014). In 1971, the charitable Concert for Bangladesh organized by George Harrison occurred on 1 August, the first large-scale rock concert benefit in history. It was beautiful of Pete to continue the charitable giving and spirit with his album "Who Came First."
I had to wait a long time to get this album - needed the money and finally I got it and played this track over and over again. Picked up the tonearm and put it back and played it over and over. I'd heard it a couple times on the radio, but it never was played a whole lot. I loved the song immediately. Great album. Great song.

Very Possibly the greatest song EVER WRITTEN.....[...but WHO am I to judge...] 10 minutes from 40 yrs ago can equal a life times worth of happiness. NOTHING IS EVERYTHING ! [...so true]
you & rpmhart have high levels of Rock IQ in the late 60's & 70's everyone was amazed that Live Rock could sound like well..The Who! (did) Pete gave us..the Air Guitar! now theres International Contests doing Air Guitar! I learned Air Guitar back then too! There would be a room full of guys playing Air Guitar at my apt. in the 70's. I would be pretty rusty now as I'm 59 and haven't picked up my Air Guitar in many years! But back in the day when The Who were Kings I could play a mean Pete T.
The Who's version has more power, but it leaves out a verse from this wonderful demo. I have both in my "Who's Beaty.." playlist. Thanks for uploading!
This track is also called "Nothing is Everything;" an allusion to Meher Baba no doubt. I love the part at the end the best, when he repeats those words; cosmic! Pete at his best.
Interesting to read the comments here about preferring Pete's voice to Roger's. I always liked Pete's vocal contributions to The Who but didn't think he had a strong enough voice to carry an album
Yes, he did. I have the vinyl and he states that: All instruments, vocals. engeneering, mixing synthesisers in fact everything except making the tea in one gynormouse ego trip by Pete Townshend. Also produce by pete townshend.
there would be no Pete without Daltrey who has been loyal to him through thick and thin and brought soul to his work that Pete's thin voice does not have.
I think it's also the fact that the group version was made to be a single so it was condensed and cut down to like half of this. Same as comparing the single version of Won't Get Fooled Again to the album one. You just can't elaborate when you try to cram this many musical ideas into less than 4 minutes.

@groundhog713 ...i bought this album when it first came out. Actually, the liner notes mentioned that Caleb Quaye played on some of this album....not sure if it was on one song or several...it's been a while since i read the liner notes
Another one of those nights. I heard this album my first year of college, got married, divorced, became a surgeon, got my career ruined, remarried now with lovely 14 year old daughter, learned to play drums, now finally unemployed , unemployable, and contemplating whether to start collecting SS. Forget all that. Look at Peter in this picture, look at him now. Do we celebrate our old age with all its failures and accomplishments, or do we long for our youth and vigor? Time is nothing, and everything.
He's standing on eggs...Who came First?..always loved it,there is a poem on the record called Content, that Pete does an unforgettable job with, absolutely breathtaking.
@titostacos yes he did - I I remember one of the music papers reviewing this album at the time stated that it lacked a certain spontaneity because of that. I don't agree with that I think it sounds pretty good!

His solo stuff is great. I like it all, what a songwriter.
Couldn't agree more, my friend. A musical genius.
sure beats 4 Beatles and a Martin hands down /thumb
@DTOM, ¿eStamos? what's about it that makes it stand out so much?

One of my favorite songs 50 years ago. Still great!
pete possibly greatest composer of our times
+Debra Mott he is certainly one of them. one and one make one
dude is a genius for sure
Debra Mott, YES HE IS
Pete Townshend and Ray Davies are the best in my eyes!
Sorry...he wrote some deep words. But Robert Zimmerman has em all in school
This is one of favourite albums evah. Let's See Action is a masterpiece
Pete Townshend is my favorite rock 'n roll band.
My favourite solo album by a Who member bar none. This LP is a masterpiece.
Yes!☝️It certainly IS❗️🎸👍😁✨
And Empty Glass and All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes. Pete is a genius.
The man is a genius! His work can prove it. Living legend!
love this album, saw them in march 68, saw meher baba at hemisfair 68 in san antonio, he was too much
It's amazing that he can play all of these instruments at the same time.
Ha ha, but he always did demos of his songs for The Who including bass, drums, keyboards, etc., to facilitate recording by the group.
No❗️Yer right❗️😆🤣 How many arms does this man have❓
he was a clever lad when he was younger lol
❤ lol !!
Love this album. Walked down the aisle to Begin the Beguine.
Still married?
I remember in the early 80s I had some people over and this girl asked if I had any Pete Townshend in my record collection. So I pulled out this album and she said "what??" She was expecting Empty Glass . Nobody hardly knew this album existed!

Timeless.
This album was a masterpiece and I never understood why it didn't achieve higher acclaim.
It was just an album of demos.
It's great art.
One of the albums to have on the desert island.
Truth
Follow the money. It might have diluted Who sales. Your flu shot works on Covid. But it doesn’t generate the same cash. ‘Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!’
Still have my copy from '72. Glad I kept all my albums!
Still have my vinyl copy too. Track Records# DL79189
Still have this in my 71 Z28, yep kept them both.
Totally got into this awesome album and Rough Mix, thanks to an older sibling with great taste in music.

Lisa Y. Wow! You know that's fantastic that you could be influence d that much by an album!
He's the greatest. Plays all instruments on this album.
Ronnie Lane is on one song and two other guys on another song.
Roger made his living by riding Pete's coat tales!
THE MASTERS OF MUSIC HAVE WALKED BEFORE US ... AND PETE IS ONE OF THEM
The last two minutes of this great song is possibly the best musical expression of creative, bold group action ever made. The instrumental arrangement throughout is incredible.

Without doubt an Extremely underrated artist
Bought it when it came out. Who's Next came out around the same time so this one was overshadowed by everyone except devout Who fans. Great album! Still have it & sounds great on the old turntable.
Superb rock track. Rarely heard . The Who's version isn't a patch on this, the original. It's perfect in every way. .
I love Pete's solo version of this song. My favorite PT solo effort (The Who do a pretty job with this song as well).
Thank you, sir, for posting this devastating song. How I remember it.
u got it bro..i used to play air guitar to live at leeds...the greatest live album ever...Tommy and Quad...the best concept albums ever....

Thanks for this post. I LOVE this song but love Pure and Easy even more.
big time.
Hard to rank Pure and Easy compared to this. They are both among the most heartfelt songs ever written by Pete. I get the same thrill from both songs.
Me too. It's so simple and effervescent. Just like Pure and Easy from the same record. Love that one too.
How fucking timely and relevant is this song today June 1st 2020! Get 'em Pete, and a belated happy 75th birthday, too. 🎸🎤🥁🎶🎹
One of my favorite albums of all time
Mine too. It was the sound track of my first winter in the mountains.
Pete was my favorite songwriter!
Pretty much all of Pete's demo home studio, the genius that is Pete Townshend!

Pete Is Incredible!
Happy 75 Pete!!!!
Thanks for upload lets see action go for it pete.
I believe he played pretty much everything..just a few guests...had this since it came out...a fave....
Pete clearly understood early on the power he wielded. So did John Lennon, as evidenced by that beautiful version of Across the Universe donated to the World Wildlife Fund. I visited my brother this spring, and stayed up past my bedtime every night being amazed at the depth of his record collection, assembled somehow while being self-unemployed in San Francisco for three decades. I had this album for years before I realized he was standing on eggshells, plus he has photos of Baba O'riley his Guru.
TheSeeker84 Baba O'reiley is a real person, Pete included big photos of him inside this album and writes about him how he would play his songs to him.
Pete Townshend of The Who, who became a follower of Baba, dedicated his 1969 rock-opera Tommy to Meher Baba in the record's gatefold.[121] The Who's 1971 song "Baba O'Riley" was named in part after Meher Baba,[122] and Townshendrecorded several Meher Baba tribute albums including Happy Birthday, I Am, Who Came First, and With Love
Look up Meher Baba and you can find info about him and photos.
+hdrake1000 Not only that, the rhythm Pete programmed into the Hammond at the beginning is based on the name 'Meher Baba'
at WOODSTOCK ,he's wearing a button w/ Baba on it.
The Baba part is for Meher Baba, while the O'Riley part refers to musician Terry Riley, who introduced Pete to synthesizers.
Very Possibly the greatest song EVER WRITTEN.....[...but WHO am I to judge...]

Interesting to read the comments here about preferring Pete's voice to Roger's. I always liked Pete's vocal contributions to The Who but didn't think he had a strong enough voice to carry an album

He probably made the tea.
I really can't stress how absolutely awesome pete's vocals are on this song. Daltrey's version isn't as good
there would be no Pete without Daltrey who has been loyal to him through thick and thin and brought soul to his work that Pete's thin voice does not have.
Nah, I respect your opinion. But this song was made for Daltrey's power vocals and Pete singing the bridge. Like Baba O'riley or Who Are You.
I agree, the Who's version is weak by comparison. This arrangement suits the song so much better, with the piano and Pete's vocal at the forefront
I think it's also the fact that the group version was made to be a single so it was condensed and cut down to like half of this. Same as comparing the single version of Won't Get Fooled Again to the album one. You just can't elaborate when you try to cram this many musical ideas into less than 4 minutes.
