I watched you for years and always wondered (with all your frustrations about setting up especially your book journal) why you don't do your own printables.
I've done it by hand for years and to be honest, it bores me. Last year I set up documents in Canva for different things like monthly stats, challenges, Goodread goals, books read in a month, books read in a year, even monthly title pages (I do a photo of me reading from the month before with some patterned paper background and the month name). Apart from the title pages it's all bare bones. Then I print them out and start decorating with stamps and washi tape as much or as little as I like. I can do that year after year and they still will look different because of the embellishments. Really takes the struggle out of set-ups and if you find it doesn't suit your needs, just fiddle with it until it does.
This year I'm coordinating my embellishments across my different journals and repeating scrapbook pages. For example for January I use the Traci Reed "Renewal" collection from 2 years ago. I have my monthly reflection and my "what photos reflected my one little word in that month" page in my yearly scrapbook, my memory planner (really just a monthly calendar page with photos), my reading journal and my planner title page - all with papers and embellishments from that collection. For February I'll probably choose another of Traci's collections.
Btw, I found a book blog named "That Artsy Reader Girl". She reviews mostly romance books and posts a lot of lists (Top Ten Tuesday) about all sorts of bookish topics. I remember you mentioned a lot of videos ago having trouble finding good winter / Christmas romances, she has lists for that. ;) I am not a big romance reader, I primarily read science fiction and fantasy, but it is my preferred genre when I'm working night shifts, because it usually is light reading and not all that hard to follow when I'm tired. I found some enjoyable books through her reviews and lists.

Hi! First off I appreciate you watching and enjoying my videos for years. Secondly, I appreciate your suggestions on how to ease frustrations with setting up my journal. Learning how to use Canva is next on my list for computer technology. In November I switched a Mac and am learning a whole new operating system. But, with the printables that you make do you just print and add to a journal or make your own journal using the printed templates? Just curious because I would worry about added bulk if I added a printed paper to my journal.
I love how you are not only using an older collection, but how you planned out the different ways to use it. I think it’s a fantastic idea. I agree that choosing new kits each year would your printables look different. That’s another great idea!
Thank you for the recommendation for “That Artsy Reader Girl”. I’m excited to check it out because I do love romance and seasonal lists sounds like just what I’m looking for. Also, makes sense to read something lighter to help you through the night shifts. If you don’t mind me asking what do you do for work?
Thank you again for the feedback and suggestions! 🥰

@@SabrinaPoole Your last question first. The short answer - I'm a nurse.
The detailed answer - I'm certified to work with stroke victims on a ward specialising in monitoring them during the acute phase (the first 24 to 72 hours). It's a step below an ICU, we do everything except mechanical ventilation. In addition I teach a concept of caring for patients with reduced conciousness and impaired perception called Basale Stimulation (German, "basal stimulation"), to nursing students as well as to colleagues.
So I read during the day when I'm tired, the nights are rarely slow enough.
For my printables I have to explain my current system.
My set-up in a journal is very simple, I have a printable for yearly stats and then start into the months. There's the printed monthly title page, then it's just a handwritten log (title, author, series, genre, dates read and rating), another printable for the monthly stats and then the next month. No reviews, no cover pictures. These are printed on sticker paper and pasted in. I use a Leuchtturm 1917 and the one I just finished lasted me for 4 years.
Everything else aka the stuff I love to decorate (Goodreads goals, reading challenges, book covers of all the books I read in a year, bibliography lists for authors I love, reviews for books I either DNFed or loved to bits) gets printed on thicker paper and goes into a binder including reading related scrapbook pages. I set it up this way because of the bulk issue.
I used to do everything in a journal and it quickly became unmanageable. Not only bulky, but because I have some reading goals (like reading an author's backlist, currently it's T. Kingfisher) that span more than one year it also got confusing, despite an index.
And I split off a journal that I call "Dingsbums", a term that can loosely be translated as a "thingamabob" or "whatsit". It's a TN sized journal where I list things I googled for a book. For my last 5 star read of 2024 for example I googled some building styles of Arabic and Indian origin. I vaguely understood from context what they were, but wanted to have a visual. Other times I might google specialised vocabulary (I mostly read in English, not my native language), geographical locations or do a deep dive into historical events / figures I'm not familiar with. Basically anything I think I need or want to know more about.
So my reading journal is actually 2 journals and 1 binder. Hope that helps.
I appreciate the work you put in especially for your book reviews. Our reading reading interests don't overlap all that much, but I've taken away a few recommendations over the years that I really enjoyed. And inspiration for layouts or topics to scrap is always welcome. So thank you.

Sports romances are my favorites! Stephanie Archer "Behind the Net" and "The Fake Out" were good ones. Kat Mizera is good too. Football Karla Sorensen "the Plan: The Wolves"
