  • Come join us for a food tour of Kyrgyzstan as we visit Arzu restaurant in Bishkek ordering up our favorite Kyrgyz cuisine including borsook, manti, samsa, shashlik, plov and lagman just to name a few. Given that it was our last day in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan we were keen to really enjoy our final meal eating as much Kyrgyz food as well possibly could. Even though it was our first time eating at Arzu restaurant we highly recommend it for your shortlist of places to eat in Bishkek. Having been mentioned to us by locals and friends we finally got to eat there and now we know what all of the fuss is about. The following is a list of the Kyrgyz food items we tried for this meal:
    1) Local tea and Arpa beer (АРПА)
    2) Borsook (боорсок) - Kyrgyz bread
    3) Samsa (самса) - Kyrgyz fried dumplings
    4) Lagman or Laghman (лағмон) - Kyrgyz noodles
    5) Plov or Pilaf (палоо) - Kyrgyz rice
    6) Shashlik or Shashlyk (шашлы́к) - Kyrgyz skewered meat (lamb)

    Kyrgyzstan Food | Eating our favorite Kyrgyz cuisine in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan travel food transcript:
    Alright, hello hello guys. We are back in Bishkek (Бишке́к) and today is actually our last day in Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and we can't leave the country without making a Kyrgyz food video.
    So where are we off to? Let's see if you remember the name. I've been calling it the wrong thing probably like 10 times in a row.
    We are off to Arzu (Арзу). Arzu!
    But anyways um a few of the dishes have arrived. And we got some Borsok (боорсок) and these are little fried pieces of dough that are fried in oil and we had these a lot when we were doing our treks and staying in yurt camps.
    Next up one of the appetizers we got is Samsa (самса) and before I talk about this I have to say I'm slightly sad because I had a big dream of having. A food dream. A food dream I had a big dream of having pumpkin manti (мантуу) which is like the Kyrgyz kind of dumplings.
    And to wash it all down because it is really hot outside and just because well I like the local beer here. I've got some Arpa and let's give that a try.
    So our two mains are here. And if you take a look I ordered the Laghman (лағмон) and I've been having a lot of Lagman (лағмон) since we've been here in Kyrgyzstan but usually in soup form. You can get like noodles with broth and this time around I ordered the fried version.
    And now time for your main. Yeah, so I'm having Plov (палоо) or sometimes it is also called Pilaf (палоо) and this is probably one of the most common foods found throughout Central Asia. Like you will find Plov in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan. Basically in this whole region it is very popular and every country has their own unique twist to it.
    Like if you're having the next thing that we're getting we're getting Shashlik (шашлы́к). The skewered meat. So this is a perfect compliment for something like that.
    And the star of the show has arrived. Alright, so this is the last one. We ordered Shashlyk (шашлы́к) which is a skewered meat.
    And we got the lamb. Ooh.
    And it came covered in onions and dill.
    And when I thought about coming back to Kyrgyzstan the one must food that I had to have again was the Shashlyk. That is my favorite food in Kyrgyzstan for sure.
    Anyways, on to that time price point. So that came to 930 Som which currently is just over $13 US dollars. Like pretty insane value. So this is like a popular restaurant. It is a bit fancier here but still it was really affordable.
    I highly highly recommend Arzu (Арзу). The food is fantastic, the prices are just right and the service is great. So definitely come here if you're in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан).
    This is part of our Travel in Kyrgyzstan video series showcasing Kyrgyz food, Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz cuisine.

    you guys doing another kyrgyz food video is like a dream come true! early this year I couldn't decide where to go in the summer and I partly went with kyrgyzstan thanks to your videos of the insane landscapes and yummy food!.. I'm there in a few weeks and have one question though: are these bigger businesses (like that restaurant) card friendly? or is it cash EVERYWHERE?
    keep up the awesome work guys! and many thanks for the inspiration!

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  7 лет назад +6

      Thank you very much! That is awesome to hear and I hope you have a great trip. You'll have to let us know how it goes. In bigger places like this you can pay with card but Kyrgyzstan in general is a bit more of a cash based society. Fortunately, we had no issues with ATMs and if you bring your debit and credit cards you should be fine taking money out.

    • @tynarbekarzymatov4127
      @tynarbekarzymatov4127 7 лет назад +2

      Agree with Samuel, Kyrgyzstan is a bit more cash based country, except capital Bishkek. In Bishkek fortunately you will find POS terminals, and ATMs near malls, and Arzu restaurant is not an exception. They have POS terminals installed from DemirBank which accepts VISA cards according to the banks web site: demirbank.kg/en/about/atm-pos/map-of-atms?region=-1&atm=2#

    I have never been to Kazakhstan nor Kyrzyzstan. However, these 2 countries are in my bucket list. I appreciate your info on Kyrgyz food since I have been wondering about it. I particularly love seafood but it did not get a mention in your video. I have travelled to some 65 countries and always try to avoid meat in favor of seafood, however I won't mind to try shashlik in Bishkek. Can you comment about seafood in the 2 countries? Any recommendation? Another question: how safe is Bishkek for a man traveling alone. I expect the Cyrillic writing / local language could be an issue. Many thanks for your service to us who love to travel.

    It is interesting to see how dishes vary between south and central asia. Samsa has a very different filling and shape from Indian samosa, but the concept is similar. Same with pilaf/plov/pulao, which is always fragrant rice with chunks of something, but what that is depends on where you are in the continent.

      Thank you for being 1st! I've always wanted to visit SF. Audrey visited before we even met and really like it. I think a west coast trip where we visit British Columbia and California is a priority for us next year :)

    I would like to clarify the situation. Plov is an Uzbek dish. Laghman is a Uighur dish. Shashlyk is cooked everywhere in Central Asia and Caucasus and in some other oriental countries. Manty came to Central Asia through Uygur cuisine. The Chinese also make manty. The true Kyrgyz dish is beshbarmak. Beshbarmak is also a national dish of Kazakhstan. All these dishes - Lagman, plov, shashlyk and manty are cooked in all the countries of Central Asia for hundreds of years and have become common

    Chay which you call it and is your tea, it's just a bit to taste the other, by the way I would not say that borsok is bread, first it is fried and it's like an additive to food, well, I guess that's all for me ...

    Раньше туристы чаще бывали на ближнем востоке в ливий в сирий и в ираке а сейчас там война и разруха а теперь туристы предпочитают путешествовать в среднюю азию

    Dear Audrey, you have an amazing talent of being able to engage with your audience! You have both charisma and style and have become really good at making the most of it. In my humble opinion, you could go a lot further if Sam resorted to staying behind the camera, taking care of all the important backstage operations, while he lets you shine in the spotlight. Since you both have a very similar background, your comments are often pretty much the same. So, in my view, everyone should do what she or he is best at. Think about it! Your regular viewer.

      kuglator80 I’m sorry but why would they do that? Sam is pretty much detailed when it comes to describe food and I really love that too! If you watch them much enough you will see that they sometime have slightly difference perspective on certain food and that’s interesting! Not to mention that Audrey has good filming skill so I do feel like the dishes are better focused when Sam eating. Last but not least, they are both great at engaging with the audience as the rest of us feel.
