    In the USA I am also finding Park seeds have many of the seeds you suggest, tho they are not inexpensive. Of course having your book "The Flower Farmer's Year" really helps! I grow more interesting flowers than I see at our local flower's market. Thank you again. Ooooh wait...I love your Mom can I steal her?!!

      If you’re in the US, I usually order from Swallowtail Seeds, Baker Creek, Sunflower Select and The Gardeners Workshop. Sometimes Johnnys but their shipping is high for seeds. However, for larger quantities and crazy variety, Geo Seeds has the best prices but is more work and they have $100 min (geared for flower farmers). The Seed Savers Exchange has great vegetable seed too.

    I'm so happy that your mum spoke about Phacelia 😀. I throw seeds around in September every year, and the plant is well established before winter, ready to spring into action for early bee food. It is indeed a sight for sore eyes when bees of every shape and size come to feed. When the plant is finished, I simply pull it up and place it where I want them to flower the following spring.My neighbour has also caught the Phacelia bug 😅 Happy New Year to you and all your family 🤗

    The club sounds exciting! 😁
    I have all my seeds for next year now and I found a great app that has a reminder on it for sowing, planting out, etc.
    I was told by a friend who keeps bees that borage is amazing for them as they refill with nectar much faster that other flowers (its about half an hour, if I remember rightly), so I have borage seeds in my selection. 😊
    I'm trying Cucamelons this year too! 😁
    I shall pass on the tip for strong tomato stems to my Dad. 😊

    Very interesting video and looking forward to the gardeners club. Love to know your thoughts on peat free compost. Seeds did very badly last year with peat free multi compost. I have purchased a large bag of peat this year, to mix in with peat free in the hope something will grow.

    • @theflowerfarmer
      @theflowerfarmer Год назад +1

      The thing about using peat based compost is that it is unsustainable. We can't, as gardeners, use up precious resources by digging up the carbon sinks that are peat bogs in order to have an easy seed-germinating medium. We have to get used to using peat-free compost. The compost makers are struggling to keep up with demand for good quality peat-free compost and so occasionally the quality does vary - but we are asking the behemoth that is our demand for compost to change its entire recipe and the logistics set up for creating and delivering it at speed. My top tips for peat-free are that a) not all of it is as good as others so it's worth doing a little research with small quantities to find one which you like, and b) it's worth watering peat free compost from below: often it can look a little dry on the surface because of the coir content, when actually if you heft your seed trays you'll find that they are heavy enough to mean that there's plenty of water in the mix for your seedlings. Never water trays of peat free compost from above as sometimes the water runs off and isn't absorbed: much better to water trays of seedlings in another tray of water leaving them there for an hour or so so that they have time to really soak up a good lot, before taking the trays out completely to drain. Good luck.
