Hi Everyone...quick note: Two songs had a copyright on them so we had to cut them out. So if you see an abrupt cut, it was YT trimming the video to edit out the copyright portion. Thank you for understanding! ❤❤ Lisa ALSO...we figured out a few minutes into the video that these were songs the Germans had on the charts as #1...NOT German musicians. LOL. Modern Talking is German, but as far as I know, they exclusively sang English songs.
Falco was Austrian but famous in the entire German speaking region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). Unfortunately he died WAY to soon (1998) in a car crash. He had a blood alcohol level that would kill other people, as well as cocain and "mj" in his blood. While he had a lot of problems in life and the press was hounding him and anyone close to him, he was a very gifted musician and singer/songwriter with hits, that are played in the radio to this day.

Pink Floyd is British, not German, but they were very big here also. The list shows the Number One hits, which were often not from Germany. In the 1980s most German singers also sung in English before the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (new German wave).
2:15 Mike Krüger was / is a comedian who had a hit in 1975 and in 1980. The refrain of this song translates roughly to "All you have to do is pull the nipple through the tab and turn the small crank all the way up; an arrow appears immediately ..."
    4:30 A carnival song.
5:10 This song won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982.
6:10 Major Tom was a German song by German songwriter Peter Schilling, and Nena is also German. She was part of the "Neue Deutsche Welle", like "Geier Sturzflug" ("Vulture Nosedive", 6:57) with "Wir steigern das Bruttosozialprodukt" - "we increase the GDP".
8:00 Alphaville is also German. You can find multiple of their songs on RUclips, like "Big in Japan" or "Forever young".
9:30 Modern Talking was an infamous German duo between 1983 and 1987. The blonde one is Dieter Bohlen, still known as music producer and jury member of the German version of Pop Idol (in the US: American Idol). The other one is the singer Thomas Anders (who did also most of the real singing in their songs).
9:48 Opus was from Austria. There are many versions of "Live is life" to find on RUclips.
13:40 This song was sung in French. "Desireless" was the stage name of French singer Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop.
14:45 Another French song by France Gall, a hommage to Ella Fitzgerald.
14:53 Ofra Haza was a singer from Israel.
15:07 Milli Vanilli were invented by German music producer Frank Farian, who was also the inventor of Boney M.

Nena sang in English "99 red balloons" but in German "99 Luftballons", in German they were not red just balloons (Luftballons :-).
Modern Talking is a German band, as is Alfaville with the song "Big in Japan." Falko is Austrian, A-ha is a Norwegian band.
Opus with "Life Is Life" is also German, as are Sandra with "Maria Magdalena," and Milli Vanilli.
Desireless with "voyage, voyage" is French as well as "Ella, elle l’a" by France Gall. And Ofra Haza is from Israel.

Modern Talking was a very popular german duet. The blond guy is Dieter Bohlen. One of if not THE most successful composist in the world. He wrote a lot of songs for singers all around the globe. And... if you ask germans... they'll probably deny liking them... but tbh... they are all lying when they say they didn't like them. xD
David Hasselhoff's success with Looking for Freedom was only because of the reunion of germany when the berlin wall fell.
There are quite a few german songs in that video. But I suggest to watch another video with songs that are made or produced by germans that will very much surprise you. For example songs from Snap!, Milli Vanilli and Haddaway were produced by germans. Also Lou Bega with his Mambo No.5.
Feli from Germany made a video about 15 songs from german artists and or producers. If you're interested.

These are #1's in the country Germany, it doesn't mean that the songs are German.
The bands 'Earth & Fire', 'Stars on 45', Mc Miker G & Deejay Sven are Dutch artists.
The song from Nicole was a Eurovison Song Contest winner in 1982.
Yes, Nena is German. The English version is 99 red balloons, it isn't a direct translation of 99 luftballons but for poetic and lyrics sake they made into 99 red ballons
Gazebo, Pierre Cosso & Bonnie Bianco are Italien artists.
Alphaville, Modern Talking, Sandra, Bruce & Bongo are German.
Giorgio Moroder is an Italien composer and this was for the 1984 Olympics and it on the official 1984 Olympics music album.
    Europe is from Sweden
Mel & Kim, Richard Sanderson are from the UK
John Farnham is an Australien artist
Desireless, France Gall are French artists
Guillermo Marchena is a Dutch drummer and singer but for the German hitserie 'Anna' he sang this song.

(Fun fact -- the blond guy, Dieter Bohlen, wrote the songs and is still one of the most successful German music producers. These aren't necessary "German" songs - not even songs by German bands or produced by Germans or in Germany. Our tastes in music can be as international as anyone elses.
Depeche Mode, A-ha and Erasure were huge hits in Germany as well, as was Pink Floyd (who are from the UK).
But then you get also people like Mike Krüger, a "local" talent, who was/is quite well known for his comedic songs, as well as some acting back in the 80s. He is German, sings German, and is almost unknown elsewhere.
    And for today's fun fact...
3:01 As you have noticed, that's the "same" song as the one before. This sort of music, called "Schlager" in Germany, was (still is, with some audiences) extremely popular in Germany at that time. So much so that the vast majority of songs _in_ German were of the "Schlager" type, while the "younger" music - Rock, Pop, Punk - was sung in English, even when the performers were German.
Roland Kaiser, a well-know singer from this "Schlager" genre, was asked to do a German-language version of that rather popular Italian song that was featured before.
He delivered a song about "Santa Maria" - Christopher Columbus, his flagship, his voyage across the ocean and the discovery of the Americas. The producers didn't like that... considered it "too intellectual". They wanted something more... mainstream. Shallow. Sappy.
So Kaiser went back and wrote a new text... filled with every trope and cliche of sappy shallow love songs he could think of. This songs IS deliberately meant to be as schmaltzy as it can be. Producers loved it, audiences loved it... it was a big hit. And Kaiser laughed about his little joke all the way to the bank.
Don't let it ever be said that Germans don't have a sense of humor. ;)

Modern talking is A German band and I really loved their music.
Nena with 99 luftballon is German too and she sings about 99 air ballons.
The young woman that was very popular singing a song sitting on her chair with a guitar was Nicole and this song is the winning song of the Eurovision in 83 I believe. We were so impressed by her as she performed the song in German, English and French no one else had ever done that to the Eurovision.

One of my favorite channels, I love watching his videos. They are always very enjoyable, and the 80s are my favorite decade with just the right genres of music.
a-ha is my favorite band, I have listened to pretty much all their songs, even the demo tracks. I wish the Analogue album was on Spotify, it is the only one I haven't listened to yet. Depeche Mode, Erasure, Kraftwerk, Jimmy Somerville and so much more artists just had that vibe, they were having fun on stage and experimenting with different kinds of music. If you watch the music video of "Don't forget me when I'm gone" by Glass Tiger, you can just see it right on their faces.

So a few things here... This is hits in germany, and there was a lot of Italian stuff in their charts as they're so close to each other that they share artists. And if something blew up in germany it blew up in Denmark too.. So i knew most of these. There was only some romantic Italian crooners i didnt know. But Nino DeAngelo i remember very well. Also Gianna Nannini was massive in germany so i remember her. No number ones i see but she'd be on the list if it was the top 10. Another thing was you seemed confused to Falco and his massive hit Der Kommisar. Some US band made an English version but we didnt have that in Denmark. I only know the german versions. Falco is a fave of mine and i find his Einzelhaft debut as good as the best from Bowie. Ganz Wien and Helden von Heute ate masterpieces. The coolest guy to come out of Austria for sure... Nobody made me pay attention to german lyrics as he did and i love that I'm fluent in German so i can understand his songs. I fwel sorry for people that dont speak German as they miss out on the magic that is Falco. And finally Modern Talking was a german band with more hits than anybody in germany i feel. Massive they where.. Not for me though. 😅
Also Voyage Voyage by Disireless from France was one of the best songs of trhe 80s. I had all the 12 inches and tried to get rhe album Francois in the summer of 87 but the shops couldnt do anything as always... Tried to find it i. Germany without any luck either. Didn't get it until 2014 or something like that. A lot of my stuff took 15-22 years to get because i lived in Denmark. I went to Germany 3-4 time's a year to get all my English music. Denmark has always been worthless regarding music... But yeah too many big acts on that list to even go through them all, but it was massive acts. You had Nena and yes thats a german act.. With the original 99 Luftballons and not the 99 Red Ballons that you had. The german has a much better text so people liked the original here. Danes speak a ton of languages by the time they're teens so we know the german tv and radio as kids and so on.. You had Nicole the Eurovision sonh contest winner with A little peace. She did that song in so many languages i remember. I dont even recall if she did anything else with music, a bit of a one hit wonder in Denmark. But nice to see and the bands we were into and some i didnt even know was number 1 hits so that's cool... 😅

I recognize every song. In Germany was a trend it called Neue deutsche Welle ( New German wave) the typical German music in the 80 the. You should react to some songs. Every German at my age(53) knows what 32168 means. It's from a very fun song called" Skandal im Sperrbezirk" by Spider Murphy Gang or "Bruttosozialprodukt" by Geier Sturzflug. I highly recommend these

The title of the video is a bit confusing - it's about number 1 hits from the German 80s CHARTS, which doesn't mean that they necessarily have to come from German singers or bands!

With the ESC 2025 coming up in some weeks in Basel, you'd maybe reaching many people from Europe on your channel (and not only from a specific European country), because the ESC is very popular in all over Europe. But it's just a suggestion 😎

These were the music (well, most of them) I hated when I grew up in the 80-ies (I'm a 70-ies kid too!), because I became a rock/metal-head very early on. Then later I started to like some other genres, so I quite enjoy some of these too.

    Hey you two lovebirds,
Modern Talking were a german pop-band, but songs were written in english.
Alphaville and Sandra we're also german as well as Nena.
99 Red Ballons is the english version of 99 Luftballons (Red= color "rot" - Luft means Air literally in german.
Voyage Voyage is french for journey or travel.
    Greetings from germany,
    Kev.
PS: Falco (rip) was a singer from Austria but is often put in german lists, because of him singing in german
