Hi Everyone...quick note: Two songs had a copyright on them so we had to cut them out. So if you see an abrupt cut, it was YT trimming the video to edit out the copyright portion. Thank you for understanding! ❤❤ Lisa ALSO...we figured out a few minutes into the video that these were songs the Germans had on the charts as #1...NOT German musicians. LOL. Sometimes we are not the sharpest tools in the shed. LOL
Modern Talking is German, but as far as I know, they exclusively sang English songs.
Falco was Austrian but famous in the entire German speaking region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). Unfortunately he died WAY to soon (1998) in a car crash. He had a blood alcohol level that would kill other people, as well as cocain and "mj" in his blood. While he had a lot of problems in life and the press was hounding him and anyone close to him, he was a very gifted musician and singer/songwriter with hits, that are played in the radio to this day.
Modern Talking sang 'a' song. Same music, different words. 😂
@baronmeduse and they shared that one song with lots of other groups! The Axes of Awesome has been making fun of "Four Cord Songs" for years and years.
@caligo7918 And the Radiostations refused to play their songs anymore
thats not GERMAN Hits they were Hits in Germany
This
Some are german songs
@monikaschmid-Loriot69 True but I guess that is true for most countries when looking at their 'top x '' music
@monikaschmid-Loriot69 True but I guess that is true for most countries when looking at their 'top x '' music
@robertx8020 yes, but HE told that theses are not german songs...
Pink Floyd is British, not German, but they were very big here also. The list shows the Number One hits, which were often not from Germany. In the 1980s most German singers also sung in English before the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (new German wave).
2:15 Mike Krüger was / is a comedian who had a hit in 1975 and in 1980. The refrain of this song translates roughly to "All you have to do is pull the nipple through the tab and turn the small crank all the way up; an arrow appears immediately ..."
4:30 A carnival song.
5:10 This song won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982.
6:10 Major Tom was a German song by German songwriter Peter Schilling, and Nena is also German. She was part of the "Neue Deutsche Welle", like "Geier Sturzflug" ("Vulture Nosedive", 6:57) with "Wir steigern das Bruttosozialprodukt" - "we increase the GDP".
8:00 Alphaville is also German. You can find multiple of their songs on RUclips, like "Big in Japan" or "Forever young".
9:30 Modern Talking was an infamous German duo between 1983 and 1987. The blonde one is Dieter Bohlen, still known as music producer and jury member of the German version of Pop Idol (in the US: American Idol). The other one is the singer Thomas Anders (who did also most of the real singing in their songs).
9:48 Opus was from Austria. There are many versions of "Live is life" to find on RUclips.
13:40 This song was sung in French. "Desireless" was the stage name of French singer Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop.
14:45 Another French song by France Gall, a hommage to Ella Fitzgerald.
14:53 Ofra Haza was a singer from Israel.
15:07 Milli Vanilli were invented by German music producer Frank Farian, who was also the inventor of Boney M.
Hey I am german. Modern Talking are both from Germany. Their names are Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders. Bohlen is a famous songwriter here and he created the band.
And the headliners of Italo Disco was super huge and influential in the 80s
Modern Talking was number 1 in whole Europe! Legends
🎉🎉🎉❤
I think they were number 1 everywhere (even in arabic countries). They were not famous in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK (except 1 of their songs).
@clapiotis in UK TOP 100 they had 4 hits
@PaulTU2 Oh they did!! I was aware only of Brother Louie which reached #4.
Yessss
modern talking is a german group with dieter bohlen and thomas anders!
they got a lot of hits in the 80s
if you want to watch a video that shows songs by German musicians from the 80s you can watch this video: ruclips.net/video/qdsxDadT898/video.html
As someone already said, it's clearly not all German songs, but apparently it's a list of songs that were big hits in Germany in the 80s. And just some of them are from Germany like Modern Talking, but some of the songs are from somewhere else.
Nice Reaction from you two.I love the Music from the 80,and Modern Talking where a Band from Germany.
ooooh! I wasn't too familiar with them! They look like Wham...George and Andrew. I'm surprised I didn't hear about them. They were my kind of music! ~Lisa
Modern Talking (Dieter bohlen and thomas Anders)
Mr. Bohlen is one of the sucsessful Producer Germanys
And (Germany’s Got Talent) Jury
Modern Talking were the scourge of Germany in the 80s. They were extremely successful (the blonde one went on to be a hugely successful producer and is a staple of the German version of "American Idol"... but they divided the nation. You either loved them, or hated them.
When you dare to listen to the songs featured here in full... you might notice that _they are basically all the same song._
Perhaps that is _why_ they were so successful. They had _one_ hit, and thought... hey, let's just do that again.
@gregandlisareact cool you react on this video. fun fact there are a irish version of cherry cherry lady. Mike Krüger is a german comedian.
❤❤❤
It's fun to hear/see the difference in hits from different countries.
Falco and Opus are austrian. Falco´s 'Rock me Amadeus' is the only german language song ever to reach the Billboard #1 (Nena´s '99 Luftballons' peaked at #2)....keep your great and funny videos coming, best wishes from Vienna ;)
I'm born in 1968, so I like the 80s. Thanks for the video❤
Moden talking is from Germany
"Modern Talking" the German duo formed by Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders, is the most successful music group in Germany with over 120 million albums sold.
Well, give Rammstein, a bit more time. They are world sellers...
@melchiorvonsternberg844 Actually, I'm going to correct this post since those numbers are outdated, and Modern Talking has sold way more than Scorpions.
Ramstein has only sold 10 million albums, less than a tenth.
You understand why I put Modern Talking above them, right?
FYI:
Scorpions = 110m
Boney M = 80m
Nena = 25m
Milli Vanilli = 10m
Rammstein = 10m
@ializarg So what? This Modern Talkin' music, was pure shit! As always, the mass, has no class. Or how Depeche Mode said it once, music for the masses... This was not about art, it was about money.
@melchiorvonsternberg844 Well, that depends on everyone's taste.
For many people, Rammstein is a SHIT.
No one here is talking about musical quality or art, but rather about best-sellers, and, as much as it pains you, the numbers don't lie.
@ializarg Well, I do. And since I know a lot about music, I can judge that. I've played three instruments myself. And tbh... I had no idea how many idiots spent money on it. So, I was able to learn something, and the numbers don't hurt me at all. I smile every time I think about how heroically, naked, Bohlen fled his house from a couple of burglars while the police were already on their way. Oh, and I almost forgot. I know someone from my youth. She had the "pleasure" of getting to know Bohlen offstage. You didn't miss a thing. This woman also appears on this list...
6:05 "You guys have good taste." Did you even notice that this was the original German version of the song? 😂
Someone probably already mentioned that Modern Talking was actually a German act; they were huge for quite a while. (Fun fact -- the blond guy, Dieter Bohlen, wrote the songs and is still one of the most successful German music producers. He's often been called "the German Simon Cowell", especially when he adopted a similarly, erm, _candid_ style of commenting on reality entertainment shows like the German version of "Idol" -- and if memory serves, also on "The Voice" for a time.)
You know, one of my favorite Bollywood songs is "Mere Dil Gaaye Ja".
If you're a Modern Talking fan, and don't know that song, go have a listen...
I think we need a new version from the Germans.
btw, i can also recommend the number 2 hits of the 80s
12:51 The songs by Richard Sanderson and by Pierre Cosso / Bonnie Bianco were key elements of a French movie about growing up (La Boum) and an iirc Italian TV miniseries with „Prince meets Beauty“ plot that were VERY popular with the German teenage TV audience at the time.
These are #1's in the country Germany, it doesn't mean that the songs are German.
The bands 'Earth & Fire', 'Stars on 45', Mc Miker G & Deejay Sven are Dutch artists.
The song from Nicole was a Eurovison Song Contest winner in 1982.
Yes, Nena is German. The English version is 99 red balloons, it isn't a direct translation of 99 luftballons but for poetic and lyrics sake they made into 99 red ballons
Gazebo, Pierre Cosso & Bonnie Bianco are Italien artists.
Alphaville, Modern Talking, Sandra, Bruce & Bongo are German.
Giorgio Moroder is an Italien composer and this was for the 1984 Olympics and it on the official 1984 Olympics music album.
Europe is from Sweden
Mel & Kim, Richard Sanderson are from the UK
John Farnham is an Australien artist
Desireless, France Gall are French artists
Guillermo Marchena is a Dutch drummer and singer but for the German hitserie 'Anna' he sang this song.
Watched it via the ZDF in the Netherlands.
Ofra Haza was from Israel.
Mysterious Art was also german
Bonnie Bianco is American.
Bruce & Bongo were British.
Oh, all these songs bring back so many memories!! I'm honestly an old man in tears now !!
awww...love it!
I love seeing the little sister of a precious old friend every time I see a list like this. When we were in our late teens and early 20s, we often partied together. When she was a little tipsy, she loved to sing. Later, it became a huge success for her. I last saw her in the summer of '22, when we met by chance on a hot summer day at one of our swimming lakes. She's still the same as she was back then, just older...
Nice reaction! Greetings from Germany! ^.^ :)
I love ur little reactions - nice people nice music nice Time =) Greetings from Germany =)
Yes, Nena is German. She made two super albums, called "Nena" And "Fragezeichen" (question mark), if you are on Spotify, take a listen. Luftballons=airballons
Nicole was the German winner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982. Modern Talking, (at least in my experience of growing up in Ireland), only had one hit in Ireland - Brother Louie... but in the rest of Europe, they were so famous.
Modern Talking sind Deutsche
The 80s were a great time for pop music, almost as good as the 70s. ;-)
For me ''76-''86 the creme de la creme.
people watching growing up in the 80s... ehm my mother was born in 84...
on a similar note: very happy to see Lisa react so happily to songs, reminds me that I may keep my excited personality while coming into my 20s now, that I dont need to become boring and calm
Hi there - love your vids - I recommend listening to some of the song - there are really some pearls in the list ;-)
You should definitely react to some of these songs individually and will enjoy it. 🥳
Modern Talking were very popular in plenty of countries in Europe.
🎉🎉🎉
80s and 90s are still the best for me ❤. Thanks for your reaction guys, you're awesome 🇺🇸
It is the BEST!!! ~Lisa
I prefer those two eras over whatever we have now since past 2015.
@gregandlisareactAll theses music was also very popular in Hungary and the Hungarian part of Rumania. I grew up in Romania in the 80s and know every one of these songs
"99 Luftballons" by Nena was the original. It was rerecorded for English speaking nations as "99 Red Balloons" and was very popular, but despite being #1 for only a week, I feel this was merely a top ten for a long time on the charts. Falco's "Der Kommisar" was known in the US, but wasn't as popular as his "Rock Me, Amadeus" which was very catchy, even if mostly in German.
Say what you want. 80's music is still the best.
....ja, was für ein kreatives Jahrzehnt....ich liebe diese Music...
Born in the 70s... I'm feeling older every year.
Oh ja ja.... Absolutely you are.... wright... true.... Mate... Same and me.... Very very much quick to....!!!!😮😮😮😢😢
13:42 Rick Roll! Have a nice day!
Especially for the 80s our #2 Charts have mabye more recognizable songs for you. Another reaction channel did that video and despaired about all those bangers who didn't make place 1 in Germany
1:55 It is from 1979 !
I was born and raised in Croatia in Europe and I'm sure that my generation was lived and Listen most popular song's ever!Like teenager was buy Bravo magazine with all that hits, wallpapers, posters and stickers who was apsolute fabulous!I miss those days😢
You guys are awesome, so much fun to watch you. Grüße aus Hambirg
Big presence from UK bands.
The one you thought was an old song was a mix by Jive Bunny & the Mastermixers - "Swing the Mood". You should watch the video for it *and* look for others from the 80s. There was at least one more that topped the charts from the album.
That's not all german songs, but number one hits in Germany this time! But there are a few german sang songs
One of my favorite channels, I love watching his videos. They are always very enjoyable, and the 80s are my favorite decade with just the right genres of music.
a-ha is my favorite band, I have listened to pretty much all their songs, even the demo tracks. I wish the Analogue album was on Spotify, it is the only one I haven't listened to yet. Depeche Mode, Erasure, Kraftwerk, Jimmy Somerville and so much more artists just had that vibe, they were having fun on stage and experimenting with different kinds of music. If you watch the music video of "Don't forget me when I'm gone" by Glass Tiger, you can just see it right on their faces.
Thank you for this great time journey back to the 80s! I know all of these songs, gosh! Love it. Just to answer two of your questions: There is an English version of Nena's song "99 Luftballons" called "99 Red Ballons", you can find it here on RUclips. Modern Talking is from Germany and Falco (Der Kommissar) is from Austria.
Modern Talking biggest sales in german history 120 million records sold
The greg and lisa sound krrrk, breaks my Headset sound XD
Modern Talking is from Germany. Very popular
11:42 Modern Talking was a German band. The two men in the video did the music but then they have trouble with each other. The dark hair man is Thomas Anders. He gave the main singing voice. The other guy is Dieter Bohlen, he was the musician or composer. Dieter Bohlen was/is the main and permanent participant of the jury in "Deutschland sucht den Superstar ", the German version of American Idol. He is a business man. He created a lot songs for the participants of the show.
Modern Talking was in German charts pretty often at their time but they are splitting Germany. Some people love them, others hate them. It's hard to say who is the majority because it alternates over the time periods. I just can say that they were also known and liked in Poland.
Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders separately give concerts. I only saw one stage reunion somewhere... But else they appear alone.
If really wanna hear all this song completly... go back in time an take the time to do it. Most of them u know, some not. Maybe worth to hear them. Greets to Spain an thanks for reacting.
First half of 80s was cool
Those both hits "Dreams are my reality" from Richard Sanderson and "Stay" from Pierre Rosso & Bonnie Bianco are songs from famous romantic movies. The first one is from "La boum - die Fete" (La boum - the party) a French movie with Sophie Marceau, the second one "Stay" is from "Cinderella 80" an Italian modern adaption of Cinderella. That´s why they were so famous.
Thanks
Modern Talkiung is a huge song project by and with Dieter Bohlen.
The blonde young man Dieter Bohlen is a German music producer, composer, songwriter and singer. He became known in 1984 as a member of the pop duo Modern Talking.
He is the largest German music producer and has worked with at least 43 artists from the music business. According to his own statements, he is “the only artist who has 25 number one hits and has been awarded over 1000 gold records
Earth & Fire was a Dutch band
1:27 Nope, this time it is about any song that became the number 1 in Germany weekly.
2:44 Yep, that's correct.
These aren't necessary "German" songs - not even songs by German bands or produced by Germans or in Germany. Our tastes in music can be as international as anyone elses.
Depeche Mode, A-ha and Erasure were huge hits in Germany as well, as was Pink Floyd (who are from the UK).
But then you get also people like Mike Krüger, a "local" talent, who was/is quite well known for his comedic songs, as well as some acting back in the 80s. He is German, sings German, and is almost unknown elsewhere.
And for today's fun fact...
3:01 As you have noticed, that's the "same" song as the one before. This sort of music, called "Schlager" in Germany, was (still is, with some audiences) extremely popular in Germany at that time. So much so that the vast majority of songs _in_ German were of the "Schlager" type, while the "younger" music - Rock, Pop, Punk - was sung in English, even when the performers were German.
Roland Kaiser, a well-know singer from this "Schlager" genre, was asked to do a German-language version of that rather popular Italian song that was featured before.
He delivered a song about "Santa Maria" - Christopher Columbus, his flagship, his voyage across the ocean and the discovery of the Americas. The producers didn't like that... considered it "too intellectual". They wanted something more... mainstream. Shallow. Sappy.
So Kaiser went back and wrote a new text... filled with every trope and cliche of sappy shallow love songs he could think of. This songs IS deliberately meant to be as schmaltzy as it can be. Producers loved it, audiences loved it... it was a big hit. And Kaiser laughed about his little joke all the way to the bank.
Don't let it ever be said that Germans don't have a sense of humor. ;)
15:51 The Robin Beck song was used for a soda advertisement with iirc slightly altered lyrics before the actual song was released.
It was THE Coca Cola song
@ I didn’t want to advertise that brand…
Nena is german and their hit 99 Luftballons was a big hit in the US too under the name 99 red balloons (not 99 rebels ihhihi)
#2 in the US and #1 in the UK...
Hi, please give a reaction to the Modern Talking songs 🎉
🎉🎉🎉
Thank you 😭 so much remenbers....
Looking for freedom by David Hasselhof is the reason the wall fell in Berlin
Modern talking is a German duo that is very well known in Spain. If you tune on 80s Spanish radio channels you are going to find a good chunk of their discography 😂
Modern Talking, Nena, Spider Murphy Gang, Alphaville, Sandra are from Germany🇩🇪. Falco is Austrian
Im Nin'alu is such a beautiful song. It is based of the 17th century hebrew poem "If the gates are locked". There is a lot of interesting music history intertwined with this song.
You don't know Kylie Minogue ? 😮
They come from the US, so that's another world there,It's a different culture compared to us Europeans..
She's sold millions of records in the US (with, I think, eight Billboard Hot 100 singles in total), but that's a drop in the bucket compared with the rest of the world, I suppose. It's all relative. Americans did like "The Loco-Motion" and "Can't Get You Out Of My Head".
I recognize every song. In Germany was a trend it called Neue deutsche Welle ( New German wave) the typical German music in the 80 the. You should react to some songs. Every German at my age(53) knows what 32168 means. It's from a very fun song called" Skandal im Sperrbezirk" by Spider Murphy Gang or "Bruttosozialprodukt" by Geier Sturzflug. I highly recommend these
These were songs that were in the German chards, but Pink Floyd is English, Earth and Fire are Dutch etc
The title of this video is wrong! These are the No. 1 songs in the '80s in Germany. Not at all just German artists!!!
Hmmm as a huge Michael Jackson fan pretty much all of my life( since the late 70’s) I’m not very convinced that he did not appear on this chart as he was as HUGE here in Europe if not more popular than in the USA.
Modern talking is A German band and I really loved their music.
Nena with 99 luftballon is German too and she sings about 99 air ballons.
The young woman that was very popular singing a song sitting on her chair with a guitar was Nicole and this song is the winning song of the Eurovision in 83 I believe. We were so impressed by her as she performed the song in German, English and French no one else had ever done that to the Eurovision.
There is no way Pink Floyd is German, they are British formed in London.
They were mistaken.
Bis auf Eins kannte ich alle! :D
All theses music was also very popular in Hungary and the Hungarian part of Rumania. I grew up in Romania in the 80s and know every one of these songs
I don't know why you laugh about Rick Astley. One of the best voices and songs in the 80s.
Cause on internet he became viral "Ricky is Rollin" to make some fun of the video
Hi Greg and Lisa, maybe you could react to the video "A beginners Guide to the Eurovision Song Contest" by David Bennett? With the ESC 2025 coming up in some weeks in Basel, you'd maybe reaching many people from Europe on your channel (and not only from a specific European country), because the ESC is very popular in all over Europe. But it's just a suggestion 😎
5:05 Nicole - "Ein Bisschen Frieden" won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982, and if you listen to the song, you know why.
This is the final performance (in German): ruclips.net/video/hp_b-095yPc/video.html (put on the captions, they're good!)
But she regularly sings the song in multiple languages, such as here: ruclips.net/video/RXVv6oyAzwk/video.html (it's German, English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian)
I do think this is a good song for you to react to. But a little warning: you might cry, it's so beautiful.
nice vid
How can you not know Modern Talking 🤨 thats so strange to me 😊
You can praise them lucky. As a 60's child, I didn't had that much luck...
Yep nena is german & yep she sing that Song in english too !
+ it gives another (neue deutsche welle song german New wave song NDW song) wich was singing in german & in english too, the song "Banküberfall" "Banc robbery"
(but i just forgotten the Band of the song sry guys, but i'm pretty shure you will find him auch without the bands name^^.)
It´s EAV (Erste allgemeine Verunsicherung) from Austria
Fun fact: While a bancrobbery goes on, with hostage-takeing, a neighbor open his windows, place the speakers and play that song LOUD over the street.
That´s Vienna 😂
3:10 German Cover -
Gitte Haenning - Die Frau, die dich liebt (Woman in love) 19
ruclips.net/video/XfAnD3X_wbU/video.html
So a few things here... This is hits in germany, and there was a lot of Italian stuff in their charts as they're so close to each other that they share artists. And if something blew up in germany it blew up in Denmark too.. So i knew most of these. There was only some romantic Italian crooners i didnt know. But Nino DeAngelo i remember very well. Also Gianna Nannini was massive in germany so i remember her. No number ones i see but she'd be on the list if it was the top 10. Another thing was you seemed confused to Falco and his massive hit Der Kommisar. Some US band made an English version but we didnt have that in Denmark. I only know the german versions. Falco is a fave of mine and i find his Einzelhaft debut as good as the best from Bowie. Ganz Wien and Helden von Heute ate masterpieces. The coolest guy to come out of Austria for sure... Nobody made me pay attention to german lyrics as he did and i love that I'm fluent in German so i can understand his songs. I fwel sorry for people that dont speak German as they miss out on the magic that is Falco. And finally Modern Talking was a german band with more hits than anybody in germany i feel. Massive they where.. Not for me though. 😅
Also Voyage Voyage by Disireless from France was one of the best songs of trhe 80s. I had all the 12 inches and tried to get rhe album Francois in the summer of 87 but the shops couldnt do anything as always... Tried to find it i. Germany without any luck either. Didn't get it until 2014 or something like that. A lot of my stuff took 15-22 years to get because i lived in Denmark. I went to Germany 3-4 time's a year to get all my English music. Denmark has always been worthless regarding music... But yeah too many big acts on that list to even go through them all, but it was massive acts. You had Nena and yes thats a german act.. With the original 99 Luftballons and not the 99 Red Ballons that you had. The german has a much better text so people liked the original here. Danes speak a ton of languages by the time they're teens so we know the german tv and radio as kids and so on.. You had Nicole the Eurovision sonh contest winner with A little peace. She did that song in so many languages i remember. I dont even recall if she did anything else with music, a bit of a one hit wonder in Denmark. But nice to see and the bands we were into and some i didnt even know was number 1 hits so that's cool... 😅
05:08 Nicole won the Eurovision Song contest for Germany with that song.
06:37 Nena is also German. The English title of that song is "99 Red Balloons" not "99 Rebels" 🙂
12:37 "Reality" was the title song of a very popular movie of that year. "La Boum" - a French one. Not sure if the artist had any other hits...
16:22 "Swing the Mood" was a medley of a dozen or so classical Rock songs.
8:48 "When the Rain Begins to Fall" Jermaine Jackson with Pia Zadora => classical One Hit Wonder in Europe; nr 1 in Germany, France, Netherland, Swiss, nr 54 in USA :)
11:35 Modern Talking - like Scorpions or Boney M - were singing in english, but they were from Germany, Falco => Austria; Yes, we had hits in Europe (in Germany too), but in the US they were less known or not hits at all, even Olivia Newton John's, e.g. "Xanadu" or the British Depeche Mode, who are more popular in Germany than in the UK. :))
15:15 Koreana is Korean group with anthem song were written for Olimpic Games in Seoul 1988.
Please do the the 90s next!
And Abba is Sweden band. :)
milli vanilli is from germany too
in english Nena´s song calls 99 red balloons. it´s not a 1 to 1 translation. it would be rote ballons instead of luftballons. Luftballon is just balloon or air balloon if you like.
BTW. Hasselhoff had caused to fall the big wall 😂
They rule 90's eurodisco too!
It's funny, I was born at 89, but I've heard almost everything from this list, but the heroes of the video, no offense, are older, but heard quite a little from this list
You guys are so cute❤
Modern Talking were from Germany (Dieter Bohlen, still runs talent shows, Thomas Anders, solo artist now)
1:36 No, the song "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd is not from Germany. It's a song by the English rock band Pink Floyd, and it's from their 1979 album "The Wall". The album was released in both the UK and Europe, including Germany. The song's lyrics and themes, while inspired by Roger Waters' personal experiences, are not specifically tied to Germany.
This will probably be more about which songs were in the charts in Germany!
If you want to hear "German" songs from 1980 to 1989, you'll have to react to this video: ruclips.net/video/qdsxDadT898/video.html
The same channel has also videos of Most Popular "German" songs from 1990 to 1999 and 2000 to 2009, respectively.
