Dr Shabir does it again. He turns a controversial verse into “hey it’s so vague” it could mean something. Does Allah not ever convey a message clearly without any ambiguity?
I like to believe that it's because He wants to give us a chance to say "we didn't understand" on the day of judgement so He can let us go on a technicality. I hope 🤞
@@qasimsultan4747 The Arabs had that excuse going for them, until Allah sent a prophet speaking clear Arabic, the language of the people. “And We have sent no Messenger save with the tongue of his people, that he might make all clear to them; then God leads astray whomsoever He will, and guides whomsoever He will; and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise” - Surah 14:4 What will save you is not an excuse of vagueness, but whether Allah chose to guide or misguide you.
Quran mentioned in Q:3v7 that there are verses which are allegorical. Not many of Quranic verses could be categorised as such ie many are easily translated/understood. Pertaining to this issue, Quran already predicted in Q:3v7 that "But those in whose hearts is doubt pursue, forsooth, that which is allegorical seeking (to cause) dissension by seeking to explain it", so your inclination is already known The verse further noted that only those with sound knowledge will understand the meaning of such "unclear" verses, hence in 3v7 "And those who are of sound instruction say: We believe therein; the whole is from our Lord; but only men of understanding really heed"
@@Furqan-tm4gk im not seeking to explain anything. Im simply telling what the Quran says that there are verses that Allah SWT deliberately left unclear. So neither you nor me nor anyone can claim to know everything about our religion.
@@Furqan-tm4gk I am not sure that “only those with sound knowledge will understand the meaning of such “unclear” verses…” The preceding section says “NONE know the meaning save Allah”. Tafsir Jalalyn concurs that even those of knowledge do not know the meaning. So it looks like your interpretation is wrong “And those firmly rooted established and capable in knowledge al-rāsikhūna fī’l-‘ilm is the subject the predicate of which is what follows say ‘We believe in it the allegorical part that it is from God and we do not know its meaning; all of the clear and the allegorical is from our Lord”. It seems to me that Qasim Sultan is right. Allah intentionally revealed verses that no one knows it’s true meaning. In fact the alleged historical background supports this understanding.
That’s 100% a term that means slaves. The Romans and all other surrounding civilizations refer to “manus” (hand in Latin) slavery. They literally ALL used that term. It has always been used in reference to slavery. They even used the same idiomatic statement of “those your right hand possesses.” It’s a very commonly historically attested term used all over the region.
Hi Richard, excellent argument. Would you please give me a citation about the Romans using that same idiomatic statement? Asking to show a Muslim friend.
Islam is the fastest growing religion on the planet, in fact one of its fastest growing segments are that of white British and European women averaging age 27
This statistic is only because of the law of apostasy which is a reason why apostates dont advertise their leaving Islam, multiple wives birthing lots of Muslim children and the questionable census' of Muslim countries over estimating their Muslim populations
@@ajmartinez1470 in fact, Hispanics and Latinos are one of the fastest growing segments of the Muslim community in the United States, with some estimates suggesting that as many as one in five new converts are Latino. In 2017, the Pew Research Center reported that 8% of all Muslim American adults were Latino, up from 1% in 2009. The American Muslim Association of North America also notes that South Florida, which has a large Hispanic population, has a growing number of Latino Muslims
I like Dr. Ally even though I’m no longer a believing Muslim. There are problems with his interpretation, but let’s grant that it is correct. If the Qur’an is the word of a supremely perfect being, why would He allow any room for confusion where such a high risk of harm exists? The potential consequences of the classical interpretation are severe. Having sex with a slave, whose right to not being treated as property has already been violated, is rape. Rape is extraordinarily harmful. Why not just spell out clearly that only spouses are allowed for sex? By not making this clear, men are easily able to justify or legitimate rape. They’re just lucky that slavery has largely been abolished today. The same question arises in respect of the discipline to which a recalcitrant wife can be subjected in Surah al-Nisa’ 4:34. Some scholars insist that the verse has nothing to do with disciplining one’s recalcitrant wife, physically or otherwise. If so, why not use the richness, nuance, and complexity of the Arabic language that Muslims love to talk about to spell out that beating one’s wife is never allowed? Combined with the sheer lack of any substantive evidence for the truth of Islam, these constitute good grounds to reject it.
I am a revert and have very little Islamic knowledge at this point in time. However, I believe Allah gave men the choice to be good people, and those who acted in horrible manners will get their punishments on the day of judgment. They had their whole lives to figure out his teachings and dictate what courses of action to take. The punishment for feeding into their desires and harming women will be paid in full Inshallah.
@@JennieLemons The issue is not whether physical discipline is excessive. It's about the fact that the man gets to discipline his wife whereas she isn't permitted to discipline her husband for recalcitrance. Instead, she must consult an arbiter if she's got a complaint against her husband. That is sexist.
@heartfeltteaching Well not to put women in a patronizing way but most men are stronger than women hence it will make sense that they are physically capable of displing a woman, whereas if she were to do the same to a man, he might lose his temper, and beater her more than he is permitted to. In fact, it is more simple for the woman to go to her relatives than to 1st talk to her husband, sleep in a separate room, and then discipline him. In Islam, women and men are made differently and instead of looking at the other gender and envying what they have, we should look at the rights that are assigned to us. Because in Islam women have rights and you previously beinga Muslim I'm sure you know of them.
@@JennieLemons This is bullsh*t. We aren’t talking about physical discipline as such (even though that’s problematic on it’s own). We’re talking about who has the authority to discipline whom, not just physically. “ … [I]t is more simple for the woman to go to her relatives than to 1st talk …” Here you substitute assertion for argument. Why can’t she take the exact same non-physical steps to discipline her husband? Why is نشوز associated with the wife rather than the husband? It may very well be *more difficult* for her to involve outside relatives in a domestic conflict. The result of Surah 4:34 is an uneven burden placed on wives. “In Islam … we should look at the rights assigned to us.” This is precisely the problem. The rights are distributed in a manner that bestows greater power and authority (درجة) upon men than upon women. We see this patriarchal norm in everything from the injunction to have one forgetful female witness help another forgetful female witness in court to the emphasis on heavenly houris being specially created so that no man has touched them before.
I appreciate Ally's argument about the appropriation of the term "literalist", and pushing such an argument to the extreme to show that not even "literalists" actually take any text "literally". All texts require more complex analysis because that's just the nature of language. When someone claims that a certain school of thought is literalist, whether in favor or against Islamic thought, they're really trying to assert authority to their claim by using the word to give legitimacy to their claim and implying there are no other authentic possible readings beyond their own. It's good to give the text the breadth it needs for debate and analysis.

I respect Dr.Shabir's attempt, it is interesting and although personally, I felt that it was a bit far-fetched, he is definitely right in that the traditional interpretation goes against the overall ethics of the Quran. May Allah bless Dr.Shabir and grant him a long life so that we can all benefit much from him. Amin
Was Allah or Muhammad so foolish that he didn't know that Muslims will misinterpret it for 1400 years and will savage millions of women due to the slavery in the Islamic world?
Indeed, and his point that you need to consider what the quran says overall is absolutely true. The revelation was revealed in its entirety and Allah says that he has perfected our Deen with the Quran so why would we cherry pick that we like without considering Allahs entire revelation and Allah knows best.
07:24 *So we can simply choose the meaning of God's Word, freely?* No book has been written with passages that have hundreds of meanings. Qur'an 4:25 shows the actual meaning, and people could even marry slaves.
Too much mental gymnastics is needed to equate right hand possessions with spouses. We don't have to resort to accepting such explanations to downplay the more consistent mainstream position so that the verse fits our preferred worldview.
Assalaamu alaikum. Please let us know how to explain this verse with the 'in other words' concept: " If any of you have not the means wherewith to wed free believing women, they may wed believing girls from among those whom your right hands possess". (4:25)
That is interesting. But I thought it would give a clearer picture if Dr Shabir could elaborate on how the majority of Mufaththir interpreted this vers rather than one Interpretation only and also taking into consideration of the practices of Muslims especially the early generation.
There seems to be an awful lot of "backpedaling apologetics gymnastics" here with regards to interpreting this verse which is repeated 15 times in the Quran The thing is, extremists will simply disregard these optimistic interpretations that are, let's just say, "more compatible with Western values" and will just interpret them literally
Jabir bin `Abdullah was heard to say: “We used to sell our slave women and the mothers of our children (Umahat Awaldina) when the Prophet (ﷺ) was still living among us, and we did not see anything wrong with that.”Grade: Sahih (Darussalam) Reference : Sunan Ibn Majah 2517 In-book reference : Book 19, Hadith 6 English translation : Vol. 3, Book 19, Hadith 2517
You have posted this hadith without context. Umar (ra) forbade this practice when he came to power and the matter was brought to his attention. Concubines who had produced children for their masters were forbidden to be to sold and became free upon the master's death.
That's just ignoring the reality of the problem , the effect of which can be observed in widespread extramarital relationships in current times. An example is the case of Ashley Madison data breach. So I'm not sure what you exactly mean when you say "God's way is best" but clearly enforcing what you deem to be "God's way" is not working very well for a lot of people even in christian majority societies.
@@sef2202 Thank you for your insightful comment. I would question what you believe to be the purpose of divine revelation? Is it to reveal the perfect eternal character of God to mankind? Or is it to dictate a set of rules for human beings to live by? The latter depends on context, environment, culture, etc. It is a mistake to try to force a 21st century global society to fit into the mold of a 9th century caliphate. God's people will do their very best to live by his perfect standard and still fail, while unbelievers will have their own standards and still fall short of that. God does not set a lower "evil standard" beyond which human beings are "safe". That is the way human beings set their own rules to judge others. God just says, "Be perfect, as your heavenly father is perfect." Only Jesus was able to live that perfect life. The rest of us can only sit in silence and awe.
@@peterhwang1860 just so that we clear, the christian majority societies are the ones who are trying to enforce their understanding of the 0th/1st century biblical law by legally enforcing "God's way" of 1-1 matrimonial model. Muslim majority societies on the other hand have a bit more leeway in this matter, so let's recognize that reality first before talking about 9th century caliphate laws etc. About the intent behind divine revelation, this is a deep subject, I believe it's a bit of both. God does not need our worship in any way, but it is to our benefit to recognize Him in His majesty, and live by the standards He set for us since as our creator He knows what is best for us. About the lower "evil standard" that you mentioned, that's your interpretation. I believe the options God has left open for us are not evil, the forbidden actions on the other hand are (in a relative way). This idea that God only gives people one perfect option and everything else is evil causes a feeling of subconscious alienation resulting in mass exodus from a religiously principled lifestyle, which we frankly are seeing in christian majority societies in front of our very eyes. Allah knows best.
@MUHAMMADSAWPBUH.Prophet.Warrior.LovingHusband. The Bible records history, and sometimes within that history, people do things that God does not approve. Every example of polygamy in the Bible leads to sin and grief. But God's intention for purity and monogamy in marriage has been clear from the beginning in Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:4-6.
Polygyny and slavery were allowed in Jewish law and Jesus did nothing to change that. So, the biblical way is the same as the ancient arabic way. The idea of monogamy was not in the bible. The marriage at Cana did not specify how many wives the man was marrying either. So, what do you mean?
I would encourage people to listen to ExMuslim Zafar Heretic, Sahil, Adam to learn about the life of Muhammad and the origin of Islam and what's written in the Quran and Hadees, and why Muhammad those verses in the Quran. My question, why Allah confused people here? Quran says it is clear. Now, there are many confusions. He is giving his own fabricated interpretations. Get lost.....
But it also state that its a book for your to ponder and to reflect on. If you look at Calculus and derivatives as a 10 year old, is it clear? But it's more clear for a person that have studied for years. The book is for all times, so things that where not clear a thousand years ago, are now clear.
What I don’t understand is the Quran says don’t take another man’s wife, except the married woman your right hand possesses. So it is ok to take another man’s wife if she is not Muslim, it sounds like Islam is racist.

Once you establish that they are believers, you shall not return them to the disbelievers. They are not lawful to remain married to them, nor shall the disbelievers be allowed to marry them. Give back the dowries that the disbelievers have paid. You commit no error by marrying them, so long as you pay them their due dowries. GOD knows best about your belief, and you are equal to one another, as far as belief is concerned. You shall obtain permission from their relatives before you marry them, and pay them their due dowry equitably. Once they are married if they commit adultery, their punishment shall be half of that for the known women.for those fearing to fall in sin. To be patient is better for you. If you take them as captives you may set them free or ransom them, until the war ends. Had GOD willed, He could have granted you victory, without war. But He thus tests you by one another. As for those who get killed in the cause of GOD, He will never put their sacrifice to waste. 🎤
Good discussion. I also think that the context of the time these laws were revealed ( in The Qur'an) or formulated ( in the Ahadith), needs to be considered to make complete sense of them as well.
Interesting interpretation. The two alternative interpretations espoused by Dr Shabir are “guard yourself from your spouse and your spouse” and “guard yourself from your spouse and a pair of things.” ie shoes😳😳😳
Quran in 4 22-25 talks about women who are allowed for muslim men. And initial expression is except what your right hand possesses in 4 24, but when Quran explains, how these women are allowed in 4 25, it says, that they are allowed in a way that you should marry them..

6:07…. This has made me question the validity of the doctors statement. Referring to spouses twice is unnecessary. The video was in an argumentative manner against the verse, who are we to deny the laws?
I am pretty sure that we can be intimate we either wives OR 'whom your right hand possess'. This is mentioned repeatedly throughout the qur'an. This implies that the conjugal rights with the wife, by extension, provides the automatic right for a man to sleep with a concubine. As for being 'literal' all the time - This is why we match the Quranic verses in conjunction with the teachings of the hadith. If it matches with what the hadith says, an opinion is supported. If there is a hadith which provides a 180 viewpoint, then a different interpretation of the Quranic verse is required. As far as 'marrying slave women' goes - I do not believe that free individuals are allowed to marry slaves. Free individuals can only marry each other and slaves can only marry each other. However, we are encouraged to free slaves and then marry them, which will provide us with twice the Barkat for each of our actions and good deeds. This is what is likely meant by 'marrying' slave girls.
Slavery is a most heinous practice ,no amount of sugar coating will justify, nobody is interested in how Islam treated slaves.Allah sent approximately 124000 so called prophets to spread his message, not a single prophet ever spoke or tried to abolish this barbaric practice…prophets in fact enjoyed slavery and marriage with small children…slavery was never abolished till 1962 in Saudi Arabia the holy land of Muslims..Abraham Lincoln was better than any so called self proclaimed prophets..Lincoln abolished this barbaric practice…He never gave means and ways of treating slaves, which is a ridiculous effort to justify slavery, but uprooted slavery…
So y'all Muslims are going to throw your brains away and not take the context of the text along with the hadith confirming that it is indeed talking about captive women... Its the one that makes the most sense
Indeed, don't take Islamic knowledge from this so called Sheikh. There is a youtube channel called "The Muslim Lantern" by the brother Muhamed Ali I advise you to watch him he does not change Allah's words to please other ppl and the west's views and morals in general. Rather, he bases everything on the Quran and Sunnah.
I find it intriguing that amidst all of the talk and double-talk Humans make of bonding, partnering and marriage the item that gets the least attention seems to be the aspect of "caring". AFAIK the original idea of marriage was a division of responsibilities and roles as it relates to peoples' ability and strength. Where did we ever get this tittering/chuckling/smirking preoccupation with sex and who gets to do what with whom? I wonder how many Westerners would get married if they had to commit to support and provender BEFORE the ceremony rather than prove it afterwards. FWIW.
So, everything in the Quran could be interpreted as anything , therefore no two people can practice the same islam? There is no objective truth in islam?

Scholars should not take interpretations as God's rulings. There is no evidence that rape or any extra marital sex is allowed. Those 'right hand possessed' should be married giving her bride gift as per verse 4:25. Verse 4:24 should be read along with v.25; not with v.23.
The Messenger of Allah, "a beautiful pattern of conduct", owned slaves and muslims traded slaves for 1300 years (slavery and human trafficking were prohibited in Saudi Arabia in 1962) . Not enough?
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. RIGHT HAND POSSESSION…. Verse 33:50 makes it clear that the Quran speaks about two different kind of women, the second kind are slave-women, and there's a bunch of other verses in the Quran that condones slavery, so this verse is not unique in this case.

As we known in Islam a person must be married to that person before having sexual relations with anybody. Why didn't Allah just use the term 'slave' or slave girl? instead of using "what your right hands possess". Allah didn't, thus could this be referring to something else? Note Hands is plural. How many right hands are possessing something? Maybe there's a deeper meaning which has nothing to do with slaves.
The funny thing is that the meaning of right hand possess was taken as slaves starting from Muhammad to a few decades ago and now when infidels have forced the Muslim countries to stop slavery, Muslim scholars found a new meaning of right hand possess to suit infidels's laws. Bravo!!! 😀😀
He is talking alternatives but missing one important part of any interpretation, context. In 4 3 As far as I know is about men taking wives, multiple are encouraged. If you can't do right by the tempting young orphans from the war then marry others or your slave girls. I think that's about it.
On such topics the questioner should be male not female. I don't understand how can her father, brother or her husband can see her asking such question to a na mehram. This has to fix! Unacceptable at all!! But I really love shabir ally❤
If we agree that owning another human being is unethical and wrong, why did Mohammed not simply stop slavery if God was on his side? Stopping an evil such as slavery includes stop owning slaves yourself, stop having sex with them, and stop buying and selling them. Another religious scholar using grammatical gymnastics to try and justify verses that do not fit modern day human reason. Can we please leave this religion behind? Instead of trying to justify the text of these outdated religions can we just ask the simple question - "does it make sense that at any point in time God found it acceptable to own slaves"? By obvious human reason, we can conclude that it does not make any sense.
No, in old testament, intercors.. can't be made with slave. Intercos can .. only with married wife-status with dignity. Female prisoners can't be used as s(...)slaves objects for male private-pleasure. Any man who's interested in a captured woman must upgrade her status to dignity of wife and treat her as israelite status. An army man can't go around sleeping with 15 captured female slaves just because "right hand possess" . Old testament says that after marriage, man needs to let a her go freely And Never Sell her as slave if the man finds her displeasing uncooperative. This is standard old testament book of Deuteronomy 21: 10-14. Jesus mentioned that because of men's hardened stubborn hearts God allowed for a time some old testament laws with regulations. Without the power of the Holy Spirit that came with Jesus on the people practicing perfection in behavior was tough. But now with the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit on followers of Jesus, now Jesus increased the standard to perfection. One wife, and "Do unto others as you want them do to you". Please ask the Holy Spirit to fill the heart. He can help in the name of Jesus Christ.
Dr Shabir does it again. He turns a controversial verse into “hey it’s so vague” it could mean something. Does Allah not ever convey a message clearly without any ambiguity?

Quran mentioned in Q:3v7 that there are verses which are allegorical. Not many of Quranic verses could be categorised as such ie many are easily translated/understood.
Pertaining to this issue, Quran already predicted in Q:3v7 that "But those in whose hearts is doubt pursue, forsooth, that which is allegorical seeking (to cause) dissension by seeking to explain it", so your inclination is already known
The verse further noted that only those with sound knowledge will understand the meaning of such "unclear" verses, hence in 3v7 "And those who are of sound instruction say: We believe therein; the whole is from our Lord; but only men of understanding really heed"

In Islam, a man is permitted to discipline his wife lightly, not mercilessly.
@heartfeltteaching
Well not to put women in a patronizing way but most men are stronger than women hence it will make sense that they are physically capable of displing a woman, whereas if she were to do the same to a man, he might lose his temper, and beater her more than he is permitted to.
“ … [I]t is more simple for the woman to go to her relatives than to 1st talk …”
Here you substitute assertion for argument. Why can’t she take the exact same non-physical steps to discipline her husband? Why is نشوز associated with the wife rather than the husband? It may very well be *more difficult* for her to involve outside relatives in a domestic conflict. The result of Surah 4:34 is an uneven burden placed on wives.
“In Islam … we should look at the rights assigned to us.”
This is precisely the problem.

Mental gymnastics are needed to justify the practice in general. That’s why many Muslims are confused on the topic.

Well you have to admit that the biblical way is simpler and better. One man and one woman, faithful to each other for life. God's way is best.

Please explain the meaning of surah 33:50, why God give to prophet the special rule for this issue?

And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses to the people that perhaps they may remember. Quran 2:221
Polytheistic women who are free. It does not relate to the female slaves.

But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]. Quran 4:3

As a revert, I've really been struggling to accept the concept of multiple wives being permissible. I am so grateful to Dr. Shabir Ally for bringing me comfort in continuing my journey with Islam.
Multiple wives is usually encouraged when it is to save orphans and widows. If you don’t want your husband to marry one more wife, you can discuss that before marriage because he is not allowed to do so….

RIGHT HAND POSSESSION…. May I ask any learned scholar..Am I correct in understanding that if a woman is married and has suffered from serious forms of domestic abuse over years, whereby the husband has BROKEN THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT! Because MEN are meant to PROTECT THEIR WIVES ( SURAH 4?)….Can another man possess that woman with his right hand, thus freeing the woman from an abusive relationship ? Which ultimately will save a woman from the desire to commit adultery, which is a MAJOR SIN POSSIBLY WORSE THAN MURDER.
She has the right to divorce the husband. Free people cannot be taken as slaves. So the answer to your question is no.
He doesn't even seem to believe what he is saying.
Verse 33:50 makes it clear that the Quran speaks about two different kind of women, the second kind are slave-women, and there's a bunch of other verses in the Quran that condones slavery, so this verse is not unique in this case.
This is quite a unique take and i dont think most mufassiroon would agree with this.

Which married woman would leave their husbamd and give themselves to someond that captured their tribe????
what a ridiculous explanation
As we known in Islam a person must be married to that person before having sexual relations with anybody. Why didn't Allah just use the term 'slave' or slave girl? instead of using "what your right hands possess". Allah didn't, thus could this be referring to something else? Note Hands is plural. How many right hands are possessing something? Maybe there's a deeper meaning which has nothing to do with slaves.

Marrying slaves makes more sense than believing a prophet of God to be God 😂😂😂😂
In Muslim but it talks about war captives which were also referred as slaves in ancient time
He is talking alternatives but missing one important part of any interpretation, context. In 4 3 As far as I know is about men taking wives, multiple are encouraged. If you can't do right by the tempting young orphans from the war then marry others or your slave girls. I think that's about it.

If we agree that owning another human being is unethical and wrong, why did Mohammed not simply stop slavery if God was on his side? Stopping an evil such as slavery includes stop owning slaves yourself, stop having sex with them, and stop buying and selling them. A slave by definition, cannot consent or reject being made to have sex -they don’t own their own bodies. Would you agree to a non Muslim friend or colleague being made a slave ? How about your sisters? And forced into sexual slavery?
Bruh the slaves of that time mentioned about the treatment they use to get from the sahabis hazrat muhammad saw told us to treat a slave with honor share the same food with them don't treat them badly if they capture some kafirs from the war they didn't punish them or sentence them death they just try to make there life more meaningful and without there consent they cannot have s*x
Slavery was faded out in arabia because of islam a slower aprouch is better as history tells us . and aquirment of slaves is prisoners of war .
And a slave in islam is much diffrent then a western slave . Can a western slave be leader of a nation no in islam he could great nations came from slaves even . There are other examples btw
@@momoustboga4668 Would you be a slave or allow your family to become slaves? Do you know that in the Koran a slave women is not allowed to cover the upper part of her body? And you would be ok with your wife or sister being a slave according to the Islamic definition? Ok.

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. Quran 24:31
