Brilliant!!! Best cover ive heard this getting dang was by Scottish band, DEACON BLUE. Dark end of the street/when will you make my phone ring.🏴🇺🇲
Found this from Hozier covering it. As a songwriter I’m always partial to the writers version. I’m blown away. 👏👏👏👏👏... I love RUclips allows us to find gems like this
@@jrbynumburnopp585 And Ry Cooder's instrumental version on 'Boomer 's Story' is equally outstanding. Wonderful use of electric and acoustic bottleneck guitar.
Margaret Ross Yeah... The FBB did a pretty fine version also. But in my mind, nobody can take it to the stratosphere like Carr & Penn. There are some songs that that should have a very strong vetting process before they are covered. Considering all the damage Michael Bolton inflicted on us many years ago.
I noticed another version by Gregg Allman with a caption (One of Duane's favorite songs). Wondering if Duane was working on it with Dan and Spooner back in the day. I don't remember who cut it first. I assume it was done at FAME.
@@jamest.byrnes8142 You can find Dan talking about the song and telling how he showed James Carr how it should be sung and sang backup on Carr's version.
Ha! I like this song. And as the story goes , Dan and Chips Momo were drinking and cheating at cards one night with some old buddies from Muscle Shoals , when they were challenged to write the ultimate cheatin song. They borrowed a hotel room and had it done in 30 minutes, lyrics and all. James Carl took it as his signature song. Two other really good versions are the 1991 Commitments soundtrack with then 16 year old Andrew Strong singing lead and Maria Doyle Kennedy one of the backing vocals , and the version by Jimmy Barnes from his 2016 release Soul Searchin, in which Dan contributes backing vocals . As an aside, it's really interesting to watch that video of Dan singing the backup dressed in a pair of comfortable worn bib overalls.
such sensitivity here, beautiful version of a great song
Thanks for the roadmap Barry! One of the greatest songs ever written!

Wow! I have been looking for the definitive version of this great song, And i now have!
George Esau / Dan Penn no one can sing the song better than James Carr. Personally, Dan’s cover of his song Dark End... is outstanding.
Hard to call this a cover when Dan Penn was one of the guys that wrote it. I love almost all versions of this song. Percy Sledge did it well also.
Hearsticles Another artist, James Carr, had a hit with the song in the US.
@@jrbynumburnopp585 Dan co-wrote it. He tells the story of being in the studio for James to sing it here...

These guys never fail to slay me.
Thank You Mr. Penn for all you've given.
Great Dan Penn
It trills me. Beautiful! This is the true music!
what a song.
Ry Cooder's instrumental version on his album 'Boomers Story' is sublime. Wonderful use of acoustic and electric bottleneck.
Sometimes you have to come to the well to drink the water
Classic soul...
Just amazing.
I had no idea this guy wrote this tune. Nice job.
Chainsaw Curtis Chainsaw, “ Old Time Rock n Roll”
Bob Seegers hit was written by George Jackson another under appreciated singer song writer. Amazing
Thanks for posting this.
I reckon Dan sounds better than ever. Fine wine aging.
i agree
Ask yourself this, how does this magic come from a old country white boy ? This is pure soul .
Great American song writer.
The only guy that should be allowed sing this other than James Carr. Not only because he wrote it, but he has SOUL!
And Ry Cooder is also allowed.
Flying Burrito Brothers is very good with Gram Parsons.
Margaret Ross
