- The civilian marksmanship program recently released some big news, specifically for military surplus collectors. If you guys have been wanting a M1903 or M1917 or even a crag Jorgensen a.k.a. Springfield 1892-99, then this might be your last opportunity to get one from the CMP. they have announced that you can get up to 6 annually. Bro, I thought I was done with the CMP a couple years ago when I mail ordered a couple 6-digit Garands to "finally round out my collection" and then they drop this bombshell news to my email. Looks like they're about to get another 1700$ from me for a 1903 FG and one of those 7.62 NATO MOD0 Garands lol!🤣 I'm mailing my order form out tomorrow. Thanks for spreading the info! I bought my 1898 Krag in 1994. Its was around $260 . If I only knew then I'd have bought all 4 of them on the rack.
I was just at Camp Perry (CMP North) over the weekend. Came home with a nice 1903a3.

Several years ago I attended the Advanced maintenance course (M1) and while there i learned about the inner workings of the CMP and rifle sales. ALL the rifles belong to the Army in some way, every month a large palletized crate from Anniston Army Depot (US Army historical clearing house) would be brought to the CMP warehouse where their expert would inspect and grade every single rifle or pistol in it and they would sell them or auction them after any repairs if needed. There are treasures brought in that are awesome and they are passed on,, so these rifles must have been found there and brought over.

My friend’s dad had a 30-40 Krag for his deer rifle back in the 1950s, 60s, he killed several deer with it, and my friend had a 351 Winchester, another old police rifle from the early 1900s, it was his deer rifle, and I borrowed it and killed one deer with it also.
Just mail mine in time before the news broke out lol. Hope i get a great 1903

Please do a video on where did all these Krags come from? Same for the 1917s and 1903s. CMP already did an origin story on the Garand. But I’d love to hear your perspective.
I might be able to find out more info on them. As far as I know they get them from Veterans organizations but there could be other sources.
@@BattlefieldCurator I wouldn't be surprised if the Army just found that they had these stored in some depot and just forgot about them over the years. LIke, forgot about them for 100 years.

Is buying an expert grade M1 garand worth it from the cmp?
Looking to get my first 1903. Was looking at getting a field grade in the $800 range from the CMP. Is that fair in terms of price? I know typically CMP sells cheaper than anywhere else by quite a bit

I bought a Remington Grand M1 at a gunshow. I took elk at 800 yards with it… offhand.
I took down a buffalo at 891yds with a Red Ryder..... Off hand.
CMP probably low on money. I just got a Garand in expert grade. Three weeks. Shoots great. I’m still learning the firearm. I figured if I’m getting a new stock anyway and a hodge pudge of parts I might as well have a new barrel. Wood on new stock is beautiful. Finish of the wood was probably like an original. Kinda not completely finished. I blocked the stock down with 80grit to remove highs and lows and finished with 600-800. No stain just Tru Oil. Little shiny but beautiful. I’m going to hunt deer with it this season!
I'm confused... ever since your last vid on CMP guns, their site's been saying that 1903's aren't available, now comes this vid. Are they for some reason making them only available in stores?

I want to buy one of these but I'm worried about the condition of the rifles - I've heard speculation also that the '03s are all 1930s or later production.
The 03s will be labeled as service grade, field grade or rack grade. I’ve seen some nice ones and some with “character” but nothing I’ve seen at the CMP looks as if it were stored in open air warehouses in the middle of Africa with livestock peeing on them. The receiver dates and barrel dates will vary, last time I went there I got a M1903 with a WW1 era receiver and a WW2 barrel. Some have WW1 style straight stocks and humpback handguards.
I paid $60.00 for my 30/40 Krag.

I would love to have any of those rifles. By the way how many of my fellow Old Goobers out there ever noticed that SGT. Shultz of "Hogans Heros" was armed with a Krag Jorgensen as were a number of other Nazi soldiers seen primarily in the background and not all of them were Stalag 13 personnel.
Yeah, Shultz carried that Krag in several episodes.
That would be typical of the home guard to arm POW camps with old rifles like that. I've seen Mosin Nagants being issued to German troops and home guard.

I've seen some very grainy video of what I think were, possibly, early WWI Mosin Nagants in use with clearly elderly and very young Germans in "Volke" units by late WWII. Despite freeze framing and all but placing my nose on the screen I still can't confirm, to my satisfaction at least, what generation of Mosin Nagant or possibly even very early Mausers I'm seeing. It's much easier to spot the rather crude Mausers in propaganda films from late 1944-1945.
A Hollywood props dept. probably had a bunch of Krags, good enough for a sitcom. "Combat" was probably using all of the available Mausers.

So what about all those 1873 Springfields?
I would guess that most if not all of those made it to the US surplus market many decades ago via other distributors.

They have a very limited number of 1903 for mail order. Probably too late now 😂.

If i recall, that 1250 was on the high end… I think the lowest they had them was 1050-1150

The CMP has been trying to get out of the gun business for decades. It's a distraction from their main goal, marksmanship

Too bad it will require soul selling and complicated loopy loops with the cmp. Buying milsurps just ain't simple as it used to be.
Agreed, I don't want to have to join a club, and fill out a ton of paprework just to get a rifle. They should just sell them to the tax payers like a normal firearms transaction. Pay on the website, then ship to an FFL. Heck I live 30min from the Anniston CMP, stopped in once and was told that I could not purchase a rifle there, I had to go online and jump through the hoops.
I’m glad people think it’s this complicated. More rifles for me. Literally all you need is a CCW and pay $20 to join the GCA
