Home Depot recently (within the last week or so) more than doubled the price of this generator. I sent a letter of complaint to them about gouging. Won't do any good. So I bought the small 2000 watt Predator from Harbor Freight. Works great.
I have a Westinghouse inverter/generator that is 2200/1800 watts. Extremely quiet and runs very good. Bought it for RTR and that was the first time I cranked it up. Got it on Amazon for $479.00. I met a guy at a campsite in June and he had a sportsman he bought on line real cheap and he loved it. I will most likely grab one for myself.
I was going to get the $400 Westinghouse Igen1200. It was sitting in my cart ready for checkout. I saw the Sportsman sale and decided to get that instead. I mean at $179 the ROI is much less. So far it has been a real trooper.
Higher octane does not make more horse power. It only allows you to tune to make more HP (more timing advance, more compression, etc.) Higher the octane the slower the gas burns. I'd spend the extra cash on ethanol free gas (which is typically premium)
Tom you are the master of the Cliff Hanger!!! Now I must watch the next video to see if the AC runs or not?!? I would have watched anyway however now I will be looking forward to it!!!!
Tom, after watching your video this past Saturday, I went to the Home Depot website and saw the generator on sale for $119.00. As you would say, "that's a killer deal" Looking forward to using this unit on our month long trip to NY and New England in September. We hope to see you at the van build in Nov or the RTR in January. Stay safe out there!
My manual has stickers applied to it indicating 7.5 oz of oil which I have measured with a syringe and its right on. More than that and it will leak while it runs til the oil level comes down
I think they have multiple factories building them is what it is and they use the parts they can source. Mine hasn’t been using any oil yet and it’s at 125 hours or so.
High octane slows the burning down. Is for high compression so does not pre detonate (diesel). At high altitude it will do nothing, or run worse possibly..
Actually, the marvel reduced the viscosity of the oil in your new engine. Ten winter thirty means you have maximum viscosity of 30wt oil. Marvel is a great lubricant, but that is really not it's intended purpose. (More for penetration i.e. breaking things loose) Genset looked like a good deal. I've only got big ones, fuel economy would be nice..
My old RV has a massive, old clunk 4000 watt beast of a generator. I've only started it once and it didn't sound too great. I'm sure it's a gas pig and so I got my Ryobi. But the Ryobi can't run my 13,500 btu AC (which is fantastic for being as old as it is by the way). Fortunately for the summer I've been camped at a relative's place who happens to have a new dedicated 30amp RV outlet. But alas I'm going to be taking off soon so I'm trying to disabuse myself of the notion of AC.
It really is a luxury. I went last summer without and was not going to do that again this year. It is far cheaper to run a generator for a/c at 5k feet where I'm at than drive two states over to Colorado and climb 10k. You could try installing a soft start on your a/c. You can get them for under $20 on Amazon.
Yeah, I've heard about soft starts but I'm unsure how they're installed. I should do some research. I think my AC unit will probably draw about 1100 watts once running and the Ryobi should be able to handle that.
You could disabuse yourself of the notion that AC is essential. You could disabuse yourself of the idea AC is even good. You cannot "disabuse [your]self of the notion of AC" because AC is a real thing, not a notion, and it's neither incorrect or correct; it simply is. Disabuse means to persuasively convince someone an idea is incorrect.
Dude, you rock! I love the snake river area, live in spokane. Just ordered this generator to run a RV style 12v charger like Iota or powermax, to top off my 3 bank boat batteries. I was thinking it would run the 45A, but in this vid you said you run the 55? Does it work on this generator? Ethanol free? Thank brother!
Update on my "killer deal" Sportsman purchase. Sportsman makes two 1000 watt generators (go figure). The 1000 and the 1000i ( which has the inverter) Yeah, I sent the $119 1000 watt back ( that generator also runs on 2 cycle oil gas mix) "Now you know the rest of the story" ..... Good day!
I'm curious to WHERE you mounted the Generator. I was concerned about it throwing off the noxious fumes and then the Air Conditioner sucking those fumes in and consequently into your van ? I used to have a generator mounted on my rear bumper underneath my AC unit and it never did pull in the fumes thru the AC unit. I think the placement of the exhaust on these generators makes a Huge Difference. And also to have a Carbon Monoxide Detector inside the van too. Cheers...great info and I really like your channel. I dont really care for all that V-Logging and am more interested in the Tech/Info/Advice/etc. side of RV living.Thnxx for sharing this info.....
Do you recommend 10w 30 on all generators? Or just that model. We been using 5w 30 in Florida for a 6k Briggs and Stratton generator. Should I change it?
Enjoyed your video, you have a new subscriber. I plan on going full time on the road this year and retiring at the ripe age of the Double Nickel. I hope to meet you on the road somewhere
Does anyone know if there is Generator like this for around the same price or where I could find this exact same generator For the same price mention in the video ?
They weren't called laptops, they were portable pc's bigger than a lunchbox. Early cell phones in the 80's were suitcase sized, the really small ones were the size of a brick and a half.
Hey Mr Hobotech I have a question for you does your Sportsman generator ever idle down so far in econo mode that it turns off? I just bought one, picked it up today at HD, and in econo mode it surges really bad and then shuts off. It runs great in regular mode but as soon as I put it in econo mode like I said it surges and it shuts itself off? So I wanted to ask you if I should just take it back? I subscribed to your channel and would appreciate an answer if you have the time thank you.
If you are putting 10w30 oil in it and it is doing that then take it back. I never had that problem but I did have it stall out when I tried using a heavier weight oil.
@@HOBOTECH Alright cool thanks man I'll see if I can find my receipt, and take it back since I've been running 10w30 oil in it. Appreciate you answering my question.
No idea what an Inverter generator is, I just need a small generator I cvan put gas in & run it for atleast 4 hours , the Inverter word makes it confusing.
I might be wrong, but I had always thought motor oil had a "shelf life" so I've never used oil that was several years old (as I wanted the best non-compromised protection possible for engines). Wouldn't even use "dated" Mobil 1 (full synthetic) oil I used/use for my vehicles, or the Amsoil I used for my motorcycle (used AGIP full-synthetic oil in my Vespa, but the case of it I bought was used up well before shelf-life would be a question). Whatever, even if wrong, at least I erred on the side of caution and no harm was done. Maybe an "oil expert" could address this issue? -- BR
Technically, they say dino oil has a 5 year shelf life and synthetic has 10. However, seeing how it sat underground for millions of years I think those are conservative estimates. If it is sealed and kept in a dark place it's not going to break down very fast. Now would I put 10 year old oil in a Corvette? No. But use it for a low compression small engine? Sure. I think my bottle was probably close to 5 years old and it seemed fine so I used it for my first two oil changes. No problems.

I did have the Sportsman 1000 hooked up to a Tower Heater earlier, and it ran it fine at the Low setting and the KillAWatt meter read 780watts... so, I am at a loss trying to figure that one out !
Refrigeration tech here... I know I'm a year too late. The compressor draws its LRA listed on its name plate for a split second on startup. This is enough to make it unable to run on a generator. Very cool little generator. I hope it runs your AC. That would be a great combo! 👍
Hi Tom. Your generator is now $349 on the Home Depot website. You got a great deal.
When it comes back in stock it will probably list for less than retail.
My manual has stickers applied to it indicating 7.5 oz of oil which I have measured with a syringe and its right on. More than that and it will leak while it runs til the oil level comes down
We must have different models. Mine had a sticker that says 10oz oil. It actually is more like 10.5oz to full.
HOBOTECH wonder if they put a bigger oil pan on revised models? They might have.
Seeing how much oil mine burned during break in I bet they did.
I think they have multiple factories building them is what it is and they use the parts they can source. Mine hasn’t been using any oil yet and it’s at 125 hours or so.

Your point about using 91 octane fuel because you're at a higher elevation makes no sense. Please explain what you were trying to say.

I wouldn't have put it in the title otherwise.
