So, Joe spent his whole career being a part of an offense that completely got wrecked constantly. Defensive schemes literally did not bother challenging him at all and attacked other weaknesses. Therefore he never really had a challenge. He had a long career because he was rarely challenged and just jogged off the field after 3 and outs. His talent was such a waste and we never got to see what he was capable of.

I feel like about 10% of RUclips commenters would make better GM's than half of them in the league right now. My Colts took Anthony Richardson and my heart sank. I think they, like 90% of RUclips commenters, fall victim to the hot take analysts persuasion. Everyone says so and so is good, so he must be! There are plenty of traits that we just *know* cannot be successful at the highest level. We know it. Richardson, as an example, had played football poorly at every level. But he's an athletic freak and a nice kid, so he's "got a high ceiling." Doesn't matter that he's NEVER actually been good at football. "We'll fix him at the absolute highest level," Chris Ballard thinks to himself. Manziel was an obvious bust the day he was drafted, just like Richardson was. Hope I'm wrong, but the entire history of the NFL makes it pretty obvious that I'm not.

Joe brought up a really good point about Manziel’s limitations. The backyard football stuff works in college but all the good/great QBs in the NFL when Manziel entered had qualities Manziel didn’t have:
    - Rodgers & Stafford had better arm talent
    - Cam Newton was bigger & faster
    - Brees was a better refined passer & pocket QB
    - Brady, Roethlisberger, Ryan, & Rivers were all taller & could take the hits Joe is talking about as well as see over a D-Line
The closest comp to Manziel was probably going to be Russell Wilson, but even he had better arm talent to make up for his height limitations. Not sure what the Browns were thinking even if Manziel didn’t have the off-field issues

i adore joe thomas, even as a ravens fan, and i get being blunt because his scouting take was very well said. but he acts as though it was all in johnny's control. ok, well, it was - but only to an extent.
what i'm trying to say is that for the past couple of years i've dealt with anxiety, depression, etc. as a result of untreated ADHD. before all of this happened, i would've jumped on johnny in the same way. we all say "oh i would've done this or that if i were in this situation", but after going through this, i've realized that people can't really understand it until they experience it first hand. it almost permanently changes a person, and sometimes we have to go to rock bottom to really understand who we are. someone can get into a place that's so dark & deep and do things consciously but not get the gravity of it towards the end, and once someone gets into that place, it doesn't matter what talents or advantages they have, it's a wrap. this is why the nfl should do screenings on every player in the pre-draft process, because most of them come from tough backgrounds, and coaching staffs/GMs should put mechanisms in place to work around those limitations.
tldr: i wish society had more empathy for conditions like this, and i pray that nobody else in these comments faces it. and if y'all do, i am always happy to be a listener, because NOBODY should have to suffer in silence. it's more complicated than people think.

I'm really glad that Mr. Thomas said this. For a future Hall of Fame veteran like that, it has to be incredibly discouraging to watch your franchise draft some guy in the first round who the odds were stacked against. As he noted, there were so many checkmarks in the "cons" column and few-to-none in the "pros" column. While physical limitations can be overcome, having a weak worth ethic combined w/ an inability and complete lack of experience playing system football made Manziel who was never, ever going to make it in the League. At no point did he ever have what it took nor was he willing to work for it. It was a lose-lose situation.

As a Clevelander and life long Browns fan, the manziel and Josh Gordon days were bottom of the barrel and then we had Ray Farmer as gm who was texting coaches during the game to put Johnny in. Between these three guys the off field distractions where at there worst. Ya the 1-31 era was bad but the Browns were kinda sucking on purpose to get high draft picks, but it was those two Manziel years that were so painful to be a Browns fan because of all the bs happening off the field. And as Thomas says, Manziel was essentially playing backyard football and trying to make it work in the NFL without really trying to expand or improve on his skills or his leadership. Sure, he had a few flashy plays here and there, but it was in the context of disrespect for his teammates and the game. He went nowhere before long, and that's where he belongs.

The one thing about A&M's offense during Manziel's time that made me really doubt how he'd do in the NFL, was that so many plays would turn into playground football. Everything would break down and Johnny would elude and then make some ridiculous odd angle pass that would hit the mark. It was amazing to watch. Then you realize that way too many plays were unstructured and broke down like that to the extent that it was almost Johnny creating it by design to play to his strengths. And because it worked, Sumlin allowed him to pretty much do whatever the hell he wanted out there. But unstructured, and allowing plays to break down by design was never, ever going to work in the NFL where defenses are not only disciplined, but much, much faster, smarter, and complex. I'm not certain he really knew how to process and execute a structured offensive strategy. He refused to study an NFL playbook, because I'm pretty sure he didn't really have to know any playbook up to that point all that well, since so much of his game was improvisation, and WRs breaking off their routes to try and follow his lead.
