- Finally got around to putting this RM85 back together. This is the engine assembly video of a 2006 Suzuki Rm 85. This engine had a spun rod bearing and had a bad knock in the bottom end.
Check out my engine removal video

thanks for this video i finaly found it after 2 years of owning mine and now i know how to put it together
Just want to say thank you for this. I'm using the 2 rm85 videos to put a crank in my daughters rm and with your help its actually going ok lol. Your a good teacher haha THANKS!!!!
Thanks and thanks for watching
I’m a rookie but this helped a lot but the wood shims worked incredible to split the rm case is just stubborn the wood shims rock lmk if I’m a idiot but it did work great
Hey bro my gearbox is fucking me off you got any solutions if you see how his locks at 5:30 mines like that with the shift forks and in the drum I can’t figure out why some vids in my Chanel
@@Tizzypj what??
I rebuild my kids dirtbike top ends never done crank....I just might try...GREAT VIDEO
Thanks for watching!
if you freeze the crankshaft it will go in smoothly
Both your video and his video delivered perfectly !
Thanks a lot !
Hey mate finally got bored of looking at these shafts and just brought a complete second hand good gearbox and everything else needed to get her finished hoping I’ve not forgot anything lol
Man I am glad to see this video. I am fixing to put mine back together next weekend.
He didn’t even put the cyclynder gasket on he just slid the cyclynder on and didn’t put the gasket im geekin😂😂😂
The kit I ordered came with an incorrect base gasket. The original one wasn't broke so i reused it. You can see it's condition in the disassembly video. Thanks for watching.
"it's important, on a two stroke.."
Amen.
Use a crank puller you can bend the crank using a press
at 8:18 on the left side where the trannsmission is. Is there supposed to be a C clip on the big cog at the top. On my transmission the top cog just slides off i dont know if its supposed to do that or not
No these isn't a clip
@confluence how did yours go
Hello will a 2005 rm85 cylinder fit on 2003
I put a RM 85 engine in a 50cc moped😂 It flyes away
Anybody know if a 2004 rm85 is the thread a normal thread or no?
The main crank bearing is reverse thread. You can look up a free “service manual for the rn 85”
@@TwoSmoker420 thanks, we are further in on the project now we are ready to get a new bearings kit then clean all of the actual engine and stuff up.
@@jackabercrombie4378 I’m in the same boat lol except I messed up the “star piece” gear for the shift drum and now I can’t shift into gear at all.. I think it came out of alignment after installing the shifter paw into the star piece gear
Finally fixed my gearbox issue with the new gearbox
Did you ever figure out what was wrong with the old one? Were you able to compare the two
@@FourwheelerDoctor I didn’t even bother comparing mate but I believe it was either my shift forks being to thin or a washer wrong side of the case as I’ve just watched your assembly video for the 100x time again lol and just noticed I’ve put it the wrong way round as that’s how it came apart but all gears seem to work well with the other box so fingers crossed I’ve just noticed I’m missing the nut for the crank (reverse thread and I’m also missing what seems like all of my pv / pv governor ) so gonna order them up and pull the cases put and that washer right before going any further lol)
I’ve rebuilt 2 of these engines and the problem was a bad rod bearing both times
Have you ever had issues/problems shifting into a gear(gear shifter won’t budge) after a rebuild?? Doing my nephews bike and I was shifting through gears just fine as he does in this video using a racket, but after I installed the “paw” ratchet shifter and tightened down the “retainer” and the two Philips screws for the retainer I also attached the rest of the gear shifter that connects through the cases and bolts to the foot shifter(that was also very very snug and wouldn’t go on unless I tapped it lightly with a small hammer) and it’s very hard to move at all with lots of force feels like it’s about to bend something… the only thing I could possibly think it could be is the paw ratchet gear(star piece he calls it) that has an alignment”notch” and pin for the shift drum isn’t aligned properly and is sitting on top causing tension between the retainer and the star piece. I would have pulled it off quickly to see if that’s the cause but I stripped the dang Philips screw as I loaded it with red Loctite and didn’t wanna strip the other one so it’s tomorrows problem now 😅
Any ideas on the kickstart mate works sweet without the case on put the case on I hear a weird spring noise kick won’t kick or turn over take case off see nothing works fine😩
Does the kickstart not move at all? The current problem on mine is the "power valve" in the video gear is catching on the water pump drive shaft gear. Once the case goes on it is supposed to compress the gears and align them so they all turn smoothly, but mine isnt lining up causing the kickstart to bind and not be able to turn.
@@VincenteCastellanos hey I sorted mine and fully road legalized it mate but sold it not too long ago now
What is the name of the casing where the oil screw go’s???
That cylinder has a liner from factory..be sure you can hone it!!!??
Where did you order the crank an parts from mine is a 2006 rm 85
I used a pro x crankshaft off eBay
Anyone still online on here? Just put a deposit down on one of these bad boys owned a lot of bikes a lot of 85s but not a rm and would like to ask some questions to someone who’s had experience building one
Sorry man. I have been out of commission for a little bit with a kidney stone. What do you have questions about?
@@FourwheelerDoctor heyyyyyy mate glad to speak with the legend himself lol, dammmm hope your okay and recovering well too, my questions is I’m gonna pick up a rm 85 08 next week that gets stuck in lower gears : ie when rotating the sprocket shaft in 1st 2nd 3rd she rotates just over half way then hits something like donk but will rotate backwards without force or anything and do the same thing but above 3rd she’s okay and in neutral she’s okay I’m thinking shifter drum/forks are damaged / came out or out of place but wondering if you had any ideas I can put vids up that I have at the mo boys partially stripped the engine but couldn’t remove the fly wheel lol I know my dads got a trusty bearing puller with 3 jaws too tbh he’s got multiple, I’m a huge 85 fan mainly the kx brand but do seem to buy and sell a lot of bikes about 45% gets posted onto here if you fancy a look if you get time bud I appreciate all of your help and time big man keep it up your doing a great job!! I hope the stones lay off ya and you recover well
@@Tizzypj just in my past experience I haven't seen many bent shift forks. Normally it's a toothbroken off of one of the gears. That will make them bind when you try to rotate. Either way you pretty much going to have to split the case to get to it. Together
@@FourwheelerDoctor yea fully understand I have to split and happy to do it mate I did think stripped teeth but rotates very smoothly and only a gentle knock when in that special position but could also be possible, either way I’m not scared there’s a entire gearbox on eBay for 100
@@Tizzypj jump on it. It's not hard to do. I would suggest getting the tool to split the case. I've caught more flack on this video for doing it with screwdrivers and I understand there's a chance you can damage the case but if you take your time as I did, it can be done without.
Necesito ayuda amigo
any torq spec on the case covers?
I usually torque them to 8 ft lb
@@FourwheelerDoctor Thanks for the video it is very helpful . I'm changing shift forks on my son's so this helped alot
@@travisblack50 yo mate
Hey mate
My 85 still won’t have it mate cases split gearbox in and out 1000xs lol, but it’ll only turn round in neutral and 5th looking at 2nd hand gearbox’s forsale on eBay they all seem to have as much wear as mine or worse one guy who’s selling one said he can’t see fault in mine but somethings definitely wrong
5:30-5:37 the way yours hits like that is what mine is doing mate
Mines doing that 5:30when my forks are in and into my drum
Those crazy ass girl friends tend to flip out a lot.
Like the song says "they're all crazy... Some hide it well and some just let it show." Thanks for watching!
And if u see at the end, he never put it in gear.
???
I’m having gear issues
Anyone here able to help my engines still giving me grief
I thought you got it going. You having more troubles than the transmission?
@@FourwheelerDoctor I thought so too lol I’m a little busy but I’ll drop you another comment with what’s going on mate stressing me out lol in short my sprocket is jamming up when I put the right side case on
@@FourwheelerDoctor I’ve done it mate uploading a vid now
Man, the way you building an engine is not good. Splitting the cases with screwdrivers, not cleaning everything. Buy an casesplitter, or make super easy a one from a piece of iron, look on youtube how to make one, but never split cases with screwdrivers, because you probably damaged them and than its would leak. For installing an crank, put it a couple of hours in the freezer, heat the bearing a little bit and it will slide in. Dont press it in because than you squeeze it together and it is not in balance. A few tips.
I agree this is the first and last 2-stroke bottom end I'll ever build. I mostly do ATV motors and they're not pressed together like this. You can pry them apart with a screwdriver at the pry points cast in the case and they pops right apart. They're nowhere near as tight on the crankshaft.
Pls stop using a steel hammer!
This guy has no business putting videos on line for people to watch this should be a video of how not to put a motor together you never press a crankshaft with a press it will tweak it out of true there is a special tool that draws the crank in I know tusk has one. DO NOT Do it the way this guy does it you will ruin your motor.you never pry your cases apart with a screwdriver either there are a lot of videos the right way check out Mike Sabo he has great videos the right way
This is the first and last 2-stroke bottom I will ever build. But as you can see at the end of the video to engine did run with no leaks and is still running after 9 months now. So either I'm lucky or good but it worked the way I did it. I agree it's not the 100% correct way to do it but it worked for me.
@@FourwheelerDoctor your alright mate don’t take notice of these internet mechanics who’ve only worked on brand new collage material and with too grade tools of the snap off man lol every back street diy / home mechanic In uk is rebuilding like this for a fair price wanna pay 850 plus parts they’ll do it by the book
@@Tizzypj thanks man and thanks for the support!!!!
