      Hi GEWA! Any news on any updates?
      I'm considering buying the G5 module with the kit (I like traditional buttons more than the touchscreen tbh), and also the fact that it still has 4 outputs.
      Could you possibly send this channel a unit to review? :) I'm sure he'd give an honest opinion and a thorough review!
      Wishing you all the best!
      (BTW: Sennheiser did a free drum library called DrumMic'a! back in the day. Maybe you could licence those as they were an amazing drum library and were released for free back then, through Kontakt player. Maybe you could ask Sennheiser to use/license them for a reasonable fee, and they could be loaded into your modules) I hope you succeed!
      Best,
      Gergo

    Gewa is a Ferrari (price wise) with wood wheels and a 40HP Engine! :-) good review so far but I missed some words about the low amount of memory in the module and the machinegunning sounds due to the missing round robin feature. The hardware looks descent but the Module is really no "beyond edrums" in 2021!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop 2 года назад

      Yeah, unfortunately the video was so long and with a lot of complaints already that I decided not to go in too hard on the memory issue. I did originally have a bit about the weird internal memory system and actually only having 2GB to install sounds to but during editing it felt really nitpicky when you have modules like the TD-50 only having 128mb for samples. But I do agree and the sounds definitely don't seem to be as high in sample count as is suggested.

    Great in-depth review. Sounds like you did way more than you should reasonably have had to.
    I went through a similar problem with a different very popular Roland alternative with ghost notes not registering on the hats and ride (though I also had failing pads). Finally got fed up, bought a new Roland kit and chalked it up to a lesson learned that you get what you pay for. I'd really love there to be more competitors in terms of quality - we'll see how the EF Note kits hold up.

    Thank you very much for this extensive review! I own a G9 L6 for about have a year, and to be honest, I am quite disappointed, I even think of selling it. All the issues mentioned here in this video completely correspond to my own experience. So it is obviously not an issue for a particular kit. As GEWA is aiming at coming as close to an acoustic kit as possible, the mentioned serious triggering problems are the most significant of all IMO. With this trigger behaviour it does not feel naturally at all. I personally could live with the other mentioned things like missing menu options or processed sounds (I trigger SD3 anyway), but the non-natural triggering is a killer IMO.
    I contacted the GEWA service as well because of the shop problems (exactly the same as described here in this video), and they responded very quickly, I appreciate this very much. But: the problems have not been solved, even no updates during all this time!
    I really hope for software updates soon being able to fix these severe issues, otherwise I have to go for another brand. What I really regret, because initially I wanted to support GEWA‘s ambitious project.
    Again, thank you for this great review, now I know that I am not too stupid to properly use this kit;-).

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your experience! Sorry to hear that it mirrors my own experiences though, that's a shame. Yeah, the triggering issues are a real killer. You just can't get around it - whether you're using the internal sounds or external software, it's going to ruin the playability.
      Their latest update should be available by now. Don't know if you've tried it yet but definitely worth a shot (though it didn't fix things for me). As you say, I want to support GEWA for this and I hope that the G5 is successful too. The G5 might solve some of the software issues due to being more Roland-like in design and (presumably) lighter in processing power for it, but I am worried that it will suffer similar problems in the triggering department.

    been waiting for this vid and I'm really happy u took the time and made this thorough!
    I'm by far not an sound/software/UI engineer or designer but it seems to me that most if not all the problems u had can be fixed with updates. i know they marketed the processor as multi layered design or something but it would be nice to know what kind of processor they use to identify the hardware of the module is the problem or simply keep on tweaking and optimizing the software will solve the problems.
    also as a 503 owner, that this module is not been sold in his country (israel by the way that's way the weird name lol) ,i wonder if the digital pads would work with this if u send the midi data through the roland module to the gewa to just produce the sound cuz i quit like them and the idea and ambition of this module.
    either way love ur vids and ur for sure underrated!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop 2 года назад +1

      Thank you! 🙏 You can trigger the module using MIDI, yeah. I did it for a little while to test some features when I was struggling with the triggering. So the digital pads will work in that way, but you'll still be limited to what the GEWA module can do with that MIDI information. I actually didn't test to see if the PS worked properly with the digital pads, but I did dial in all of the GEWA pads better on my TD-50 than I did on their own module.

    It's funny because every other video of the g9 I've seen have been really good, none of the issues you've mentioned. I had a roland td12 when they first came out and the hi hats were crap and the triggering wasn't great, the sounds were great either

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop 2 года назад

      To be honest, you can make it appear like there are no problems like with the performance videos I've included in this review. Although they look and sound ok, when you look at the captured MIDI information from those performances, they're pretty messy - extra ghost notes all over the place from cymbal and drum hits etc. Of course, you could technically clean that up (along with any problems) and send the MIDI back to the module to record the sounds more cleanly. There may well be some people not having issues, but there also appear to be a lot of people with similar stories to mine in the comments. Shame to hear about your TD-12 experience.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop 2 года назад

      I don't currently own one but I might end up getting one to make packs for so could be possible. I have used one before and it's not great as a standalone, mainly because it's not really designed for it. So you can make it work by adding pads and splitting some for extra inputs (with just normal splitter cables too), but the number of velocity layers on the V-Drums sounds are pretty low and they feel more dated than the one-shot samples. Of course, the ones shots aren't really that good for playing as standalone sounds either. It's great as a hybrid module though.

    • @Garagedrummer
      @Garagedrummer 2 года назад

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop I’ve heard that about the velocity layers being low. Seems a shame that the V-drum sounds being less quality than at least the TD-17. The TM6 has a good appeal because it could be a great dual purpose module. Practice and performance. Also love the simple form factor and individual in/outs. Not sure why I somehow gravitate to the stuff that not everyone is using. It’s a curse and usually cost me more cash and time in the end ;)

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop 2 года назад

      If it was just for some light practice now and again on top of the hybrid use, it would probably be serviceable for that. But yeah, it might not satisfy as much as even the lower end Roland modules. I think Roland are pretty careful to make sure their products don't cross into each others' territory, tbh. I could be wrong but it feels like they'd rather have 2 products for you to buy for 2 functions rather than 1 that fits it all.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop 2 года назад +1

      I tried the pads on my TD-50X. I could dial them in much better than on the GEWA module. Not perfect by any means but very similar to other centre cone triggers (hot spot and all). The positional sensing worked more reliably, but it was the wrong way round - giving me a centre sound at the edge and vice versa. The cymbals worked well too, though only one can be 3 zone on a Roland. Still had the hot spots too if I remember rightly.

  • @doublesynchrohelix8613
    @doublesynchrohelix8613 2 года назад

    I personally like the light cymbals, they sway more like acoustics which keeps you chasing the wave and makes playing more dynamic and lively. Just personal taste from someone still plays accoustic more so. Something about a completely static E-kit that makes the drummer, therefore, sound more robotic.

    Exactly what I felt when I tried it out. The triggering is not good, inconsistant and too hot. Sounds not very good either and the rimshot-issue is a disaster. It think Gewa really underestimated getting good triggers. They seem cheap and the hotspotting is tremendous. The kit is just not competitive in 2021, certainly not for what they`re asking for it. The module has many good ideas (love the pdf-reader and onboard wi-fi) but Rolandkits are lightyears better than this. Even the cheaper Roland-kits will crush the Gewa when it come to triggering, feel and consistancy.

I could never get the sensitivity I wanted from the pads I used at the time (admittedly none of the pads were ATV pads, I only had the module, and most of the pads were DIY ones or awkward pads on other modules too). I also felt that the sounds lacked the impact that I wanted and there weren't enough options for my personal taste. I enjoy tweaking too much for such a limited module, but I know some people love the simplicity and the sounds. I really liked the sound of it when I heard the playback from recordings or when other people used it (I lent it to a stand-in drummer and listened through the PA, sounded great), but the "feel" of the sounds didn't do it for me, personally.

      Great to hear it! They were very good with me too so it's good that they're consistent with their customer service!

    I’ve had a gewa g9 for a couple of years. It’s a ghastly bit of equipment. It’s an enduring source of misery. The hot spotting on the hi hat is impossible to tame. Avoid it at all costs

    that's a LOT of money to pay for something that feels half baked. They seem to have some major issues they need to rethink

      It is given how much it costs and how long its been on the market. Releasing something in this state is shocking.

      Bad ass seeing you here! Question! Have you had a chance to try the Lemon Thor T 850 module or Roland copy drum pads? It would be bad ass if you or Edrum did a review on them! I’m actually thinking of taking a chance and buying a kit off Alibaba

      @@Lemon_Drums_USA I saw the modules for $95, but it's a minimum 2 per order. I'm not sure I want to take the risk.

      @@demonicsweaters yeah, I saw that for the cheaper module. But they also have a high end module that comes with this red TD 50 look a like kit. I figured if the pads trigger like the cymbals. It maybe worth it just for the pads and rack alone. I’ll let you guys know if I buy one. Super intrigued
