  • In this Curtis Review, Jake discusses Friendship (2025) directed by Andrew Deyoung. Starring Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Whitmer Thomas, Ivy Wolk and Eric Rahill, Friendship tells the story of Craig, a socially awkward and often cringey 40 something who couldn’t be more milquetoast and beige, but eager to connect. Craig’s wife Tami, who recently recovered from cancer and almost definitely wants a reason for her strange husband to get out of the house, sets up a bro-date with cool-guy neighbor Austin. From there, we are taken on a bizarre, cerebral journey into the world of male friendships. Other topics include belly shaking laughter, Punch Drunk Love and “The Secret” episode from the American Office.

I found this movie far more disturbing than comedy. He made my skin crawl. I actually had to quit out to look for a review to see if I was wrong. Very uncomfortable to watch.

movie has a paper thin premise and never really goes anywhere or accomplishes anything, it had some haha moments from pure absurdity not clever writing, it was alright but i doubt i'd watch it again

I was exposed to Tim Robinson on Detroiters, after that i became a huge fan. I even went back to watching his SNL skits. His surreal humor is spot on

I'm a fan of I think you can leave. I still found this movie sad overall. I liked it, but I had to shift my perspective, I don't see it as a comedy, more of a psychological thriller with some funny moments sprinkled in.

I'm curious- People who enjoyed this movie, what are other shows///movies you found funny?
I love ITYSL, Tim Robinson leaves me in tears there, but this just seemed like an hour and a half of cringe and I just felt disappointed at the end, I don't think I laughed a single time.

Friendship is pretty unique to the buddy movie / male friends movie trope, but movies I like that come to mind similar to Friendship are What About Bob?, World’s Greatest Dad and even The Cable Guy (my friend mentioned this, I still haven’t seen the entire flick so I can’t vouch for it). This movie was definitely for me, but I think other people are reacting to it like you. For me embracing the discomfort and tension of this movie is the key to the comedy- otherwise we’re just laughing at / with a socially awkward probably likely neurodivergent person.

@@curtisreviews5880Cable guy is one of my favorite movies and I’d consider What about Bob a classic, I think the difference there is everyone but the cable guy and Bob are “Normal” so their reactions are humorous but when every character just seems off, it’s like weird just to be weird. Like the son kissing the wife on the lips… yeah that’s just odd… is it funny? I mean I guess as any other weird thing lol. Oh well, I guess that’s why comedy is subjective 🤷‍♂️

DETROITERS! Watch it if you haven't, the best two seasons of a sitcom. Even with all the wonderful absurd insanity happening, in the end the heart of Detroiters is the genuine and heartwarming friendship of Tim and Sam. Man, they're like the perfect comedy duo, both complementing each others insanity and stupidity.
I have to mention Jim Hosking's one season wonder Tropical Cop Tales, pure aggressively absurd insanity. And let's throw in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, a true classic.
And here's a few films I feel have a similar vibe as Friendship: Rick Alverson's the Comedy (2012) (95 minutes), Todd Solondz's Happiness (1998) (134 minutes), Quentin Dupieux' Wrong Cops (2013) (83 minutes) and Jim Hosking's An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin (2018) (108 minutes)

Oh and I gotta throw in Tom Green's Freddy Got Fingered (2001) (87 minutes) The greatest meta comedy film ever made, a metaphorical middle finger to the whole hollywood system. What happens when you give a man enough money to make film who actively wants to sabotage the film. You get the masterpiece that is Freddy Got Fingered, from it's film making rules shattering opening to all the wonderfully obvious meta-commentary, it hits all the right spots for me and I'm so happy people are starting to see it's many layers nowadays and appreciate it as almost a artistic statement. I think it should be studied in film schools. How to break a film, analysis on Freddy Got Fingered. or some shit lmao
And of course there's David Wains and Michael Schowalter's Wet Hot American Summer (2001) (97 minutes) and its prequel and sequel shows. I still can't believe the cast they got in the wet hot universe, pure comedy gold.
And why not throw in Rick Alverson's Entertainment (2015) (103 minutes). This isn't a funny film, this isn't a entertaining film, this is a slow anxiety inducing slice of life story of a stand-up comedian played by Gregg Turkington also playing his stand-up alter ego Neil Hamburger. Fascinating film.
Talking about Gregg, can't forget the greatest comedic performance art character study that is Tim Heidecker's and Gregg Turkington's magnum opus On Cinema at the Cinema. I don't think there's ever been such a semi interactive media project that has lasted this long, 13 years and going. 2017's five hour long the Trial of Tim Heidecker is to me the greatest comedic achievement of all 2000's, the slow and dry build up towards the completely absurd ending is just masterful. Nothing beats larping On Cinema universe online with other Greggheads, Timheads, Estevezheads, Hobbitheads and whateverheads. What a world and what a community, I give it 6 bags of popcorn and 6 bags of soda. But it can't be a popcorn classic because it's not a movie (Mister America (2019) (89 minutes) doesn't count be cause we all know documentaries aren't real movies)

Here's a small list of films I feel have a similar vibe to Friendship.
Happiness (1998) My favorite feel bad film that also makes you laugh.
The Comedy (2012) Oh god, oh no, this is a nightmare. A wonderful nightmare.
Wrong Cops (2013) Yup, those sure are the police!
An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin (2018) Weird and awkward people trying to act like real human beings. In a hotel. Stuff happens.

Movie was okay i enjoyed it. It didn't really feel like a comedy to me tho. Without Tim robinson i think the movie would have been dull. His over the top absurdity made it somewhat enjoyable. If i had to describe the movie id says its a drama/thriller with comedic tones.

I was so hyped for this film and boy, oh boy did it deliver! Last time I laughed this hard and often was the last time I was rewatching ITSYL or Detroiters. I'd also highly recommend Rick Alverson's the Comedy (2012) (95 minutes) as a double feature with Friendship.

@@curtisreviews5880 Have you seen Alverson's follow up to the Comedy? I don't think Entertainment (2015) (103 minutes) is as good as the Comedy and it sure doesn't entertain, but it's still an interesting journey.
Would love to see what Alverson and Robinson could do together. Hell, throw in Sam Richardson too, Detroiters proved that Tim and Sam are the perfect comedy duo, both perfectly completing and adding to each others insanity. Such a shame we only got two seasons but at least they're two perfect seasons of sitcom television.
