Wow, I learned more here than the last four or five videos I watched.
thank you so much for the thorough lesson. I love it that I can learn so much on RUclips from these wise gray whiskered gentleman who are gracious enough to share they know.
You're welcome. And thanks for the kind comments!
i am evaluating getting a pp iv so very helpful. i have a 10 pole swith box for 3 motors on my forage chopper with no wiring diagram. this vid helped me immensely because i did not know about the COMMON and reversing it means to go backwards. also very helpful. i see that you like electronics & clocks as i do. so i subscribed. keep those vids coming. thanks
Thanks for the video. I pulled my switch out to clean the contacts and it blew the fuse in the process. I was able to troubleshoot it using your video.
Great! nice job.
So much help. Im getting ohms and power on the plug so Im going to buy a new switch. I did everything you did on the video and that helped troubleshooting.
@ Todd Harrison, by the way I just watched all of your Power Probe Videos because I have been seriously considering buying one for some time now. All were great Videos, but this one sold me on the Probe IV absolutely. Wish I would've pulled the trigger on getting one years ago. Being able to inject power to a circuit is just awesome! This is just an amazing Tool to add to my arsenal. My friend said why would you want to.spend money on this when you have a Fluke 87V. This video is exactly why. My Fluke won't power up a circuit/motor/servo etc.
Great video! Keep up the good work. You just won me as a Subscriber.
Thanks, Phillip Chambers
Thanks Phillip! Glad to have help you out. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine. I forget to get it out when I really need it because I've done things old school for so long that when I finish figuring out a problem old school I face palm remembering I couldn't have pulled out the prob and found the problem so much faster. HA.
@@ToddFun that will most likely be my problem as well.
Very helpful, clear video on how to troubleshoot and use a probe.
Great Video! Thank you! This was extremely helpful to me and I was able to determine that my switch was my problem with my power mirrors. I tried to clean the darn thing several times and nothing worked, so I ordered a "Brand New" one. Thank you!
did the new one solve the problem jeffrey?
Nice basic but VERY HELPFUL video! Just purchased my PP4.
Y'll love it. I use mine all the time. Takes a while to get used to using all the features when needed but reviewing the manual and watching all the videos I linked to in my blog posting helps.

Very descriptive presentation thank you.
Your welcome. Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you so much. I use your video as a guide to add power towing mirrors to my truck. Since it didnt came equipped with that option
Came to find out the pin outs for the power mirrors. I don’t have a power probe. Instead I manually jumped connections to each motor using the power outputs.
Also, I avoid Dorman because they are usually junk. If they aren’t bad out of the box they fail within weeks or months.
Awesome vid. Just bought a power probe 4 can’t wait to put it to work
Great! let me know how it works for you.
Good video, well articulated, very informative.
Thanks! Glad to share.
Very informative. I didn't even know about the reversing common wires ( I haven't seen that on my "98 jeep), because I was thinking how can he get up and down on one wire? Haha :)
Todd, your the man.!!! 👍👍👍
Tks on lessons on what parts manufacturer not buy from and how to trouble shoot
hi dear im really would like to thank you so much for this video it's best video can make any one fix or do new wiring for this mirror diagram
Great video,i did learn something
How did you automatically know that was the common wire. I’m guessing a wire schematic???.
Next lesson ... the value of banana jack back probe adapters ... ( as that thing comes back for simple pin faults ) 🤣
Hi, can apply this test to my ignition switch connector? To check if the issue is the Ignition switch itself or anything else ie. NSS, starter solenoid or starter? My starter relay and fuse are all good. Just installed new battery.
Is there a way to test the switch itself? Maybe with the multi meter?
Question do you know the switch pin configuration of the Ford 901342 power folding mirror switch. It has 8 pins 1 power, 1ground, 1 common, 1 fold, 1 left mirror up down, 1 left mirror left right, 1 right up down, 1 right left. Would love to know plug positions please
Great info. That power probe is cool. Does it plug into to power from vehicle battery or does it have an internal battery?
It has to use the power from the battery which is also needed anyway for it to do the resistive analysis which helps tell you if the circuit wiring from the battery to the test point is good or not which. It couldn't do that unless it had it's own known good wire connection to the battery to compare.
Help! I have a 2001 Ford Excursion Limited, and both mirrors aren't working. I tested the positive and negative wires and got 0 voltage. The fuse is good and I'm needing answers. I took apart the switch thinking that was the problem but it was fine. Please help!
If I’m getting roughly 270 ohms at each motor are they bad?
Very thorough thank you, but... could you perhaps show a short cut by just testing the terminals of the bad switch?
Good idea, I don't have the bad switch anymore.
hey friend, does it work to check and find open circuits right? does it have those like fuse conectors? could i make a manual conection and trace the open circuit in the fuse receptacle wires?
You could use this PP4 but you would also need this add on kit too: Power Probe ECT2000 Short Open Circuit Detector
Hello, how do you know what wire is your common wire?
muchas gracias , le agradezco su video me sirvió de mucho , le cuento que hasta me atrevo a desarmar el switch lo he limpiado y trabaja excelente , grasias por su tiempo y dedicación
Welcome.
I have been trying to figure out the best way to determine if the switch in my 03 mustang was bad since my passenger mirror only goes up and down but not left or right. Replaced the switch and same results. I wonder if my chance I still have a bad switch. I will finally get to use my Power Probe now that I have watched how to use it. :)
Good, let me know how it goes. Another very common problem with mirrors is that water cause enough contact corrosion that the wires that plug into the back of the mirror motors behind the mirror need to be taken off and cleaned. Sometimes you can manually tilt the mirror one way at a time and get a small screw drive and needle noise to pry off the connectors, scratch up the contacts, put on some dialectical grease and reconnect. That solves a lot of the mirror control problems because those connectors are exposed to the elements behind the mirror. You can even get the power probe back in there to power the motors at the connectors just to make sure the motors are good.
Nothing like a Dorman part
True :(
Great info here.. thank you !
My pleasure!
Gracias amigo!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
so if you don't load the power circuit how do you know it can carry the current to the motors?
As always the true test is to load the circuit in normal operation. However assuming the circuit is OEM with no alterations then when the prob shows the circuit has low resistance and is giving a green circuit test light that means the wiring, connectors or switches are good corrosion free paths which is a "good" indicator that the circuit will handle it's OEM designed current load.
Exxelent tutorial
Still waiting for a follow up on the ADM terminal.
Great Video, very informative. I didn't know that the common terminal was used for Positive and Ground.
Is there a way you could have tested the switch itself? Either by continuity with the Fluke or with the Power Probe?
Sure, you can buzz out the switch with continuity using a multi-meter like the Fluke or any other meter.
Lets say the switch is good. Now I have to identify if its a bad connection or if its bad motor right? So next I should unplug the motor that isn't work, have someone play with the switch, and see if i get power at the connector that goes to the motor correct? I shouldn't need to hook up the ground, just use the probe to see if I get 12v right? Or would I still need to connect the ground cable from the power probe?
xXBurntBaconXx hook up just power. No need to hook up with Ground as you say. Those particular mirrors have exposured wires to the elements and connections sometimes inside the mirror get corrosion. So just pull off the wires and clean the connections. You can sometimes do this just by tilting the mirror and reaching in with a long needle noise pliers.
But if I want to supply power directly do the mirror motor then I will have to supply a ground for it using the ground probe wire and then supply power using the power probe correct?
xXBurntBaconXx correct.
The problem is that the switch was made by Dorman. Never buy Dorman.
Correct me if I'm wrong but a continuity test should only be carried out on a disconnected circuit....
Yes. But this PP4 can do power tests and ground tests. www.toddfun.com/2015/11/24/power-probe-4-review/
Continuity is a resistance test 'ohm'
Well if a small current is applied and you get low ohms that can be called continuity. But really if current can flow in a circuit then you have continuity. The quality of that continuity can be measured in ohms or current flow. Most meters will read continuity as any ohm reading under a set small value like 25 ohms. However this may not be a good conductive circuit which is why it is really good to do power tests with a PP4.
Todd Harrison Sooo does the display only show the battery voltage of can it be used to measure Voltage drop and display the measures voltage on the display
Yes, it will show battery voltage and voltage drop with ohms reading all at the same time. This way you know if it is a good power conductor.
great video. How would I do this for a power seat motors on a 03 durango? only the forward and back works. the other directions motors dont make any sound. I'm assuming the motors are bad... but not sure. How would I test the switch? the fuses are good
You will have to get to the motor and decouple it at the connector and test if you can drive the motor like I did with the mirror or my window motor in my PP4 review video. If the motor is good then it is most likely the switch. Normally you and open up the switch for the power seats and clean the contacts to get them working or order a know working switch from www.car-parts.com unless you want new then get it from a dealer or local parts store. If you know the wiring for the switch you can test it with as well using a normal DMM in continuity mode while toggling the switch.
Right. Should I look for 12v when I press the switch?
You could, but if the switch is bad you will not get power for those directions of course.
Right. So thats how you test the switch, right? And either ohm out and/or put 12v to the motor. If both turn out I have a short somewhere huh?
a short will blow a fuse someplace. You could have an open. I bet its just dirty contacts in the switch. I have cleaned many many power seat control switches and they work just fine once you sand the contacts with a little 600 grit paper.
Nice video... would you please do troubleshooting radio ?
Thank you.
What tip of problem is y our radio having that you think you need help troubleshooting. Power? speakers? Antenna retraction motor? RF Reception? Interference? etc. Could be anything.
my car radio shut off and on ....every 10 seconds..?
Thank you
My car radio shuts off and on every 10 seconds....? i would like to buy one like this.
Strange. Must be a defective radio that is over heating or has bad solder joints. Best to get a new cheap radio would be my first test to isolate it to the radio. If a new radio does the same make sure you're not using any external amplifiers. Starting place for sure.
Thank you!
You Should get paid for the extrapolated info:)
Your welcome, Glad to help.
Hi Todd
my car mirror dont move and dont folding.
ı think my door switch dont working.
but ı am not sure.
how ı can check the mirrors without switch.
honda civic vııı SMGE110NH167L
THANK YOU
That could be hard to figure out. Check fuses first. Could be a relay too in some cars.
NICE
Thanks!
Dorman junk parts
Not much else out there for old trucks. And I got a good one that works fine now. I can't spend the type of money the dealers want so that leave rock auto and on line wrecking yards.
Todd Harrison watch south main auto. Eric o hates dorman as I do
I'm no fan of dorman but it is what it is when its the only economic options.
I got to get one of those great vedeo
Great idea. I must agree.
I wish he would have shown in the video how he tested the switch 😒
True. Sorry. It wasn't had with the wire diagram.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Schrauber
I worked in an auto shop and we quit using Dorman parts altogether. They're junk more than 50% of the time.
I can tell you exactly why that Switch was Bad. Because it was made by Dorman!
They are the absolute worst Manufacturer of Auto Parts on the planet. Anytime I go to the Auto Parts Store and check for a Part, the first thing I tell them is "No Dorman made Parts"
I had to replace a lower Intake Manifold on a GM 3.8 liter V6, and all they had was a new Dorman $260.00, put it all back together, and ended up with half of the Coolant in the Crankcase because if their shitty Manufacturing processes or lack thereof. Took if back for a refund , then went to the Junk Yard and pulled am original GM off of a wrecked Buick for $50.00 bucks, and problem solved. Dorman cost me about a day and a half of wasted time. I will never buy another Dorman Part again in my life. I've heard from at least 20 Mechanics of the same type if experiences with Dorman Parts.
Brand new defective Dorman part?? You don’t say... You’re lucky you got a working one on the second try. Lol
Ha True.. :)
Dorman can be hit or miss, but most of the time you don't have a choice.
So true.
Its not that simple for a average diyer
First one needs a schematic wiring pinout diagram
That informs what is in that plug
In terms of ground or pos
Is the item acctivated via ground or pos
So
No its not that simple
Amazing that a Dorman product is bad right out of the box, must be made in China. Years ago I used Nehoff electrical components and had no problems but can not find that brand any longer in my area. Standard Motor products years back were the worst but have been steadily improving but I still get the occasional bad one. I know cost of production and profit go hand in hand but corporate greed has gone too far. Just take a look at Takata air bags for instance, it has cost peoples lives and no real solution in site after how many years now? I've always taken pride in doing my job right but this shit can make the best of us look bad.
True, not much you can do. I have noticed that even the Jeep dealer will not sell OEM parts for my 20+ year old Jeep. They will sell parts but they say "We can order that and have it shipped to your door. " You pay the dealer price and a crap 3rd party part you could pick up at Autozone for 1/10 the price shows up. When asked they say that is all they can do for me because they clear their OEM inventor on 20+ year old Jeeps. Crazy.
Two and a half minutes in and still waiting for the test to start. C'mom man.
never buy doorman
Dorman parts are historically bad
