The nineteen-aughts continued to feature films of the "cinema of attractions" mode seen in the past century but also witnessed the emergence of the narrative story film and the pioneering of continuity editing. Modes of the exhibition also changed from screenings at fairgrounds and opera houses to the growth of storefront movie theatres, or nickelodeons. By the end of the decade, the major American film companies (some of them French subsidiaries, more or less) formed the Motion Picture Patents Company.
