I had the absolute pleasure and honor of meeting Val in 1987 at the Cliffs Pavilion in Westcliff, Essex. At 15 I was the youngest audience member (I didn't know that was going to happen) just the performance my Mum and Nan had booked was a late night show. He sang a song I really liked and some of us stood up to clap the song and he saw me, walked across the stage and said to me, its wonderful to see younger fans here at my show..... after the show I got to meet him and he gave me a handshake and a hug. Its a memory I will never forget.
Great to see Val again. I always loved his programmes during the 60's & 70's. My daughter was most put out when she was taught Rafferty's Motor car at school. "In their version - the words are all wrong," she said, as she had heard the true version while her Mum was playing Val Doonican's record.
I'm in my early fifties here too and agree with all the other nice comments about Val Doonican. A thoroughly lovely man who has always rewarded me with wonderful memories of my childhood. I recall trying to sing Delaney's Donkey as a youngster and still remember quite a lot of the lyrics now. He stands out as one of the people from TV I am most fond of. I always thought he looked like my Dad and he is almost the same age too.
I met him once in Bournemouth when I was about 7 or 8 he was just sitting by the hotel swimming pool,he chatted to me for ages, what a nice man RIP Val.
When I was a young lad Val Doonican was my favourite entertainer on the t.v. I can remember on Saturday nights when my mum and dad were about to go out and telling my older brother " let him have Val Doonican on later " and when the show started sitting in front of the telly and not moving until Val had sung his final song from that old rocking chair . Wonderful memories of a truly great singer and entertainer . R.I.P. Val and thanks for the memories .
Like many families we always watched the Val Doonican show we always enjoyed every show it was very family orientated it’s a shame that this type of programme no longer exists, it always brought the whole family together. God bless Mr Dooonican for his wonderful voice and gentle manner he is much missed.😌
Val Doonican was one of my most favorite singers, he was the ultimate in easy listening. He was a most most modest man, and would prefer to talk about the success of others rather than himself. It will be a very long time before we ever see the likes of such a person again. I still listen to his songs, my favorite is his version of "Elusive Butterfly".
Great to see Val Doonican. I used to watch his show in the mid 1960's on a Saturday night with my parents. Brings such good memories when I see the shows on youtube and BBC 4. TV stars didn't have the big ego's that they have today they just were professional and had dignity.
Many thanks for sharing this lovely interview. A real Gentleman and a true professional. His legendary relaxed style is absolutely genuine. Val was completely unfazed by live Saturday night television (a prospect that would terrify many).
Val was not only a successful recording artist with many big selling singles and albums.but he was a gift to television and variety theatre as he was naturally gifted with an irresistable.charm..A natural
rember watchen with my late gran in the 70s,,!! when I was a kid then !am from northern Ireland,! RIP, the great VAL,,!! can say you have made me have great time when I was just a kid, !!watchen whan a was a kid,/ just wish we could bring back the 70s,!!
Mr Doonican was an excellent singer and he had a lovely easy charm about him, but I was surprised to learn that very few of his albums have ever been released on cd and his former manager said Val's music has not stood the test of time, whatever about that, he is an example to today's pretty poor generation of entertainers on how it should be done.
Many childhood memories watching val doonican in the 60s and 70s,hewas actually a pretty good acoustic guitar player, just watch him do a song with Dennis waterman on one of his shows! 🎶
Sadly I don't have the albums anymore. Rash decision I'm afraid and ended up giving them away. Val Doonican's Ireland was a favorite I wish I'd kept hold of though, but there you go! (sob sob)
We used to watch his show every time it was on and loved the funny songs. Sweet memories of my dear mother enjoying his gentle songs on the rocking chair. When I got a bit older, I used to like playing "Paddy McGinty's Goat" as a hornpipe on the bagpipes.
The BBC studio Val talks about was a converted Methodist church on Dickenson Road (or, to locals, affectionately Dickie Road). When it was demolished, houses were built on the spot. There is a round black plaque commemorating the studio and the programmes, people etc. who worked there. Val Doonican is a true Irish LEGEND. I also grew up with him on the telly and on the record player. I love him to bits. God bless you, Val!
Doesn't he look fantastic? He must be pushing 80 I suppose. He gave me such pleasure as a child. He had a saturday night show in the early seventies. His interview with Parkinson was very memorable. Wish I could see it again.
Think he was the first man I loved when I was eight…! Big age gap for sure….but I loved everything about him inc the sweaters. Sure it’s cos of him that I have a massive collection of colourful sweaters!
I use to love listening to him sing I can remember those Saturday's on BBC and my parents loved hearing his songs absolute shame he's passed but believe he'll never be forgotten and thing is tv has changed so much over the years it's not the same anymore like it use to be..
He told of how him and his dad used to sit in the shed at the bottom of the garden and talk about life, on one occasion he had him go find all of this particular type of weed for him. He found out years later that he had cancer of the thowt
From above that was interrupted while I was typing it: So sorry, the dog jumped on me when I was typing {lol} His dad had cancer of the throat and the weed was an old wives tale of a cure
What a lovely man. He was always there when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. He had a lovely voice God bless him.
Watching from Ireland it brings back so many memories ❤

ring of bright water...film with bill travers and an otter, great film
Loved Val Dooigan song Jennifer's rabbit
Wear genuine and real from the past meets contrived and insincere in the present.
used to end his show singing.."all my loving" made famous by the Beatles
There is a rare recording of Val titled "Remember me". Wonder if anyone has it.
Now . . . .
. . . . Delaney had a donkey, that everyone admired,
temporarily lazy and permanently tired . . . .
. . . . I'd keep going , but I won't . . . .
. . . . because . . . .
. . . . reasons . . . .
. . . . yeah.
Good grief! I really thought he would have been wormfood by now! well done Val!
He sounds more Irish here than he did in his heyay!
😊
I don't think he was going for an Andy Williams look at all, in that opening video.
Not a tattoo in sight just a pink cashmere cardigan
Perhaps England's version of Andy Williams
He was irish
Interview should have lasted half an hour.
Micael Holliday, say no more.
*******
see where daniel o donnell come from, stick with val
he looks like prince charles
A lovely Irish man
