Assuming you start on the 6th string and go up: Ionian: WWUURR Dorian: RWWWUU Phyrgian: URRWWW Lydian: WUURRW Mixolydian: WWWUUR Aeolian: RRWWWU Locrian: UURRWW
I’ve been learning modes for the past year and I’ve by hearted all the patterns to the point where I can shred them but you have literally unlocked a new way of looking at them that makes it easier for me to keep track of which pattern I am in and visualizing the scale on the fretboard when I improvise. Please make more videos on theory and the fretboard and maybe even weird chords (chords other than major and minor)
your videos are great in my 40 years of playing ive never seen anyone break this stuff down like this now ill say if i practices like i should i would be a masterful player but im still just a casual player but your videos are helping me broaden my playing thank you
The most ridiculously easy way to memorize all the modes positions across the strings using 3nps. Gavin, you have literally made my day. I can't say it enough. Using this as a mnemonic to at least feel out the fretboard through the modes is the best (even though I can't call out all the half-steps, whole steps, intervals, scale degrees, or note name)
this made my life 100x easier, i remember struggling to learn scales using the caged and looking for note name to note name, this pattern is 100% accurate on the notes, its not even one of those patterns that has pros and cons, this literally have no cons
Once you learn this it all makes sense. I remember figuring it out and wondering why the hell nobody used to just say this immediately to new musicians lol.
Ionian - 2nd "W" Dorian - 2nd "Ring" Phrygian - 2nd "U" Lydian - 3rd "W" Mixolydian 1st "W" Aolian 1st "Ring" Locrian 1st "U" See the pattern, play the 2nd shape from your first 3 notes. And the 2nd for the last 3. Lydian in the odd man out, because for it's relation with Locrian, and creating that Tri-tone with the flatten 5th in Locrian.
People think the CAGED System is easier to remember than 3NPS, saying “CAGED has only five shapes ve 3NPS’s seven.” Not understanding there’s only one “master pattern” that makes up all the seven positions and that EVERYTHING is consistent and systematic. (Unlike CAGED) It creates consistency with picking, fretting and with intervals: #’s & b’s stay consistently on the same string by raising or lowering the note and this never interferes with pick-hand or fretting-hand technique. (Same with the Sweep picking arpeggio inversions)
I played on guitar about 12 years for now. I figured this patterns a while ago, but never see someone really use that. It's more sad that i realize that not many people seen your videos and truly understand how easy it's can be to see a freatbord. Thanks for your work! I'm thinking about to start making a video for my region to make learning a guitar much easyer for other students. Hope you don't mind if I addapt some of your videos for my country😊
Mate , your lessons are really good , i know most the stuff your teaching, bit definitely learnt something from the left hand strength lesson, so thank you
That was really great Gavin. It's the first time the light bulb came on about what the modes are and how it's determined by where you start on a scale.
Just forgot 2 crucial things: after the last W...there is a half note shift to the first U; and the crossing threshold at thr 2nd string (B) causes a half note vertical shift (and would be a whole shift with the first example). Other than that...this guy is spot on..
In my first watch... you lost me in the modes bruh! But... in my watch second watch... it CLICKED! Those frickin' shapes really do come in handy. 💎✨👌 You 👑sir are a "National Treasure!" for learning guitarist like me.
This is so dope. I’ve been going through your shorts all day. It’s refreshing to not having to sit through one 20 minute video. It’s concise and you put a little of your own spin to everything I’ve learned. Do you have an email or something for people looking for lessons?
I noticed that hooters concord shirt, not far from me. Do you do any in person lessons? Can you do a vid showing how the hell rings of Saturn do that insanely fast pick tap/hammer on type thing at the beginning of faces imploding?
Wow, mind blowing! For me the most difficult part is making myself practice this (along with the video) over and over until it has sunk in. I suck at practising - or rather making myself practise 😕
Definitely would love to see some 7 string theory in there, I just picked one up about a year ago and have been trying to add it into my routine These little shorts are super interesting. Thanks for your perspective
A really cool note on this. I learned the 3patterns s xy&z but same thing. You can tell which mode it is by the 1st two patterns played. There are some really great videos on this method. Probably the easiest way to get the modes down IMO.
Being a guitar teacher as well.. and coming up with my own ocd patterns to show students.. I've come to a conclusion... either you're ocd as well, or just love the instrument as much! Haha Regardless, it's a new concept I found very helpful! Thanks for this video and hopefully many more! You're a great player and teacher! Cheers, friend! 🍻
I think it was you who made a video about the major scale where you used WW (whole whole), HW (half whole), WH (whole half) just like on how you taught the pentatonic (long long short short short)
I was following for most of the video but the only thing is I learned minor scales as having only 2 notes on the D string. So are you playing some sort of extended minor scale here?
Plays octave note on the D string that would be on the G string, and then extends the G string to next note in scale to make it a 3 NPS for the whole scale
in 3NPS the 1st finger should to get less money than all others , never hammers nor pull offs, never bends, uff ..even the little pinky always works harder than him , .
In short, WWWUURR.
Ionian: 2W
Dorian: 2R
Phyrgian: 2U
Lydian: 3W
Mixolydian: 1W
Aeolian: 1R
Locrian: 1U
Good man
Thank you.
I don't really get this. He said it in the video, but it's not that clear.
this is plain wrong, e.g. Aeolian is 2R, Ionian is 2W
Assuming you start on the 6th string and go up:
Ionian: WWUURR
Dorian: RWWWUU
Phyrgian: URRWWW
Lydian: WUURRW
Mixolydian: WWWUUR
Aeolian: RRWWWU
Locrian: UURRWW
This is my third time watching it. It feels I level unlocked in my understanding & freedom on my guitar fretboard knowledge. 🕊

Thanks for your comment!! I'm glad it helped -- I will do more videos with theory in the future :)

Holy crap, this is a really good lesson!
holy jeez, never thought it could be simplified in such a simple way
this made my life 100x easier, i remember struggling to learn scales using the caged and looking for note name to note name, this pattern is 100% accurate on the notes, its not even one of those patterns that has pros and cons, this literally have no cons
This is the same as Michael Pillitiere's series "building the better scale" except his is x, y, z. I find the concept extremely helpful!
Once you learn this it all makes sense. I remember figuring it out and wondering why the hell nobody used to just say this immediately to new musicians lol.
Ionian - 2nd "W"
Dorian - 2nd "Ring"

I mean, you can view CAGED through an "L-R-D" lens too. Same idea.
thats exactly how i learned it, but had to discover it myself and it took me years and years. this is just great!

If i could discover you a decade ago, i would be a metal god today... thank you to make something hard way more easier.
Wow, thank you so much for this! That gave me a paradigm shift at how to look at the fretboard.
Neat trick. Thanks for sharing.
Real glad I found this bro! Just excellent! Thanks
Incredible
Fast paced, crystal clear explanation. I took notes. Stellar content. Thank you. Subbed. 🥳
Mate , your lessons are really good , i know most the stuff your teaching, bit definitely learnt something from the left hand strength lesson, so thank you
Thank you so much now i get modes this helped so much!
That was really great Gavin. It's the first time the light bulb came on about what the modes are and how it's determined by where you start on a scale.
Cool trick... and you could also say that the pattern to move horizontally, starting from natural minor (Aeolian), is R1 U1 W2 R2 U2 W3 W1
Just forgot 2 crucial things: after the last W...there is a half note shift to the first U; and the crossing threshold at thr 2nd string (B) causes a half note vertical shift (and would be a whole shift with the first example). Other than that...this guy is spot on..

Thank you, man! I really appreciate it. Email is gavinbrookslessons at gmail dot com or you can reach me on instagram (gavinbrooks100)
thanks this broke the confusion for me
This was so helpful (and so are all of your other videos!) thank you so much!!
Cheers, dude! You're welcome
I noticed that hooters concord shirt, not far from me. Do you do any in person lessons? Can you do a vid showing how the hell rings of Saturn do that insanely fast pick tap/hammer on type thing at the beginning of faces imploding?
I'm not in NC! In Seattle. I don't know that specific Rings song, but they do a lot of tapping with the pick instead of the finger to play way faster.
Wow, mind blowing! For me the most difficult part is making myself practice this (along with the video) over and over until it has sunk in. I suck at practising - or rather making myself practise 😕
You been practicing guitar lately?
This is just what I needed to practice modes man thanks for the quality lessons! Seriously you have a knack for teaching this.
Cheers!!
Definitely would love to see some 7 string theory in there, I just picked one up about a year ago and have been trying to add it into my routine

How do you rememeber when to shift the shapes down the neck?
Probably gonna have to learn the major scale then go from there.
I think I understand. Does each mode have its own 7 positions? Sort of like the caged system having 5?

Get a better camera fix your frame so we can see your guitar and please do more videos man this is amazing!
Tabs? Do you sell any courses online?
Can you play some Angel witch
how can I get lessons from you? I've been commenting on here and tik tok
Easy but still i got some confusion like the fret number does it goes like ladder?
After each sequence it looks like you're sliding up the fretboard one half step. Is that always the case ?
in 3NPS the 1st finger should to get less money than all others , never hammers nor pull offs, never bends, uff ..even the little pinky always works harder than him , .
What kind of guitar is that
WWWUURR
Ok,so lets check,what do You know about...harmonic Major ? :)
No,not minor,Major,yes ,harmonic Maaajor :D ionian b6 :)
Any songs? :)
