Hi! I’m an aggressive quad skater. I’ve been in the parks about 4 years and the streets about 2 years.
I want to start off by saying that a very large majority of our community doesn’t support this “zine”. Yea sure Tony hawk is there, but you’re absolutely right it’s a money grab. I’ve heard that Tony is an angel investor in Fantom’s parent company, Lazo; many of us don’t support Lazo either.
I always thought how ironic it was that Fantom works with Dave Carnie, who perpetuated homophobia and violence towards the aggressive inline community, meanwhile the faces of Flazo (Fantom/Lazo) have derived MOST of their tricks from aggressive blading. Hell even some of those quad skaters have dated or are currently dating other aggressive bladers.
The release of this “zine” has fractured the aggressive quad scene into two. Those who support Flazo, and those who don’t. I’m embarrassed to be “represented” by homophobic quad skaters and skateboarder bros who are only interested in sucking every last dime out of our community.

A lot of rollerskaters in Montreal openly disowned the mag with Its association with Dave Carnie's homophobic past, elitism, punching down, etc. Both blading and quad scenes here are growing stronger together. I don't see any distancing, quite the opposite. There's tons of collabs, events and sessions with both communities. One thing that's positive about the quad community here is that they DO NOT tolerate discrimination of any kind... whatever they tried to do with the mag backfired hard 😬

As a quad Skater from Europe - I fully agree with your comment 110%. Only the Ppl involved in fantom seemed to like their own ideas regarding the choices they took with the magazine - everyone else from the community really disliked what they did - not only the Tony hawk part. Also I'd like to add that the quad community is indeed slowly stepping away from the blade trick names but not to then replace them with Skateboarding trick names but rather to reclaim the OG names from the quad Skaters of the 80s and 90s - most of our tricks already had names since that time. Like "makio" was used to be called an axle stall / grind back then - we adapted Maiko for some reason (tbh I don't know I'm still in the process of learning more about this topic) . Obviously language evolves continuesly and is always changing - another one would be box grind instead of kind grind - These are just examples but there are more OG quad trick names that are slowly sneaking their way back into the language. I really wished you guys would have invited someone to the podcast who'd speak for the community instead of these speculations 😅

I started of as a skateboarder and boarded for about 5-6 yrs. Got introduced to blading and when I transferred over on day 3 I did a mizou first T down a hubba. Yes it's major difference but I do believe the balance in skateboarding and grinding on boards helped 10fold when it came to grinding on blades. For someone who always enjoyed grinding overall rather then gaps and stairs. I came Into blading for the amount of grinds and the length of grinds you can do that you seriously can't do on a skateboard
I love blading and don't miss skateboarding at all. Respect to the both ofc

Thanks for this content guys! Always great to hear your perspectives on things. The irony of Dave Carnie and Tony Hawk getting behind Fantom is rich. Both would have aggressively mocked quad-skating in the past. Personally, I think Carnie needs to be stopped before he brainwashes another generation of kids into hating another group of people through bigoted rational. You can hear them trying to figure out new ways to justify hating rollerblading with the "trucks" thing. So lame. Carnie always viewed himself as a provocateur and shaper of culture, but his brand of edgy shock-jock nihilism went out of fashion in the 90s. He's obviously not reformed, just glomming onto a new trend to try to be relevant again and push his bigoted agenda. Arlo lost the plot when he tried to align rollerblading with Carnie. I hope quad skaters can continue to embrace inclusivity and not fall for an us-vs-them mentality.

As someone who loves all kinds of skating (I blade, roller skate, and skateboard) I feel like Hawk is stuck in a bit of a stigma about blading and maybe that is why he questions his respect. I think you guys may have missed that he said that the skateboard trucks came from rollerskates, and back in the day when skate parks were first being made they were named "skate parks" because they were referencing roller skates and skateboards. I say this because there is a history there before this new wave of park quad skaters. Skateboarders also generally look at rollerskates as two separate skateboards which is maybe why they relate more to them and take more inspiration from them, even back in the 70’s/80’s.
Dave Carnie seems to have set that question up for attention, great marketing but I’m not sure if it runs very deep or if there is a financial motive. Inline skating is still more profitable than quads, but park roller-skating did go under hibernation during the rise of aggressive inline skates.
I also don’t believe any skating is “easier” they’re all a different feeling and it feels like park roller skaters are trying to find their own cultural identity. I just hope that in the eventual sense, all wheels will have respect wherever the hell they want to be. Peace and love!

The story is, that I started my training as a future derby referee, however I'll plan to do refing on blades. (Aeon 80s to be exact) They really need refs, so I got permission to do so and there are also other blading refs, but i already recieved a fair warning: Prepare, that you will be mocked a lot. As addressed, Dave Carnie is a misogynistic homophobe and it seems like any interview (or project) he steers is bound to crash and burn somewhere.
Honestly, there is so much wrong with this new magazine and this episode was only scraping the surface with this one article. The other articles are debatably more damaging to quad skating, and with that ripples to effect the dynamic of skateparks and other action sports too. Overall I think this episode would have benefited including a quad skater to understand our perspective on a lot of these issues since it directly involves us. Maybe next time this is something to consider? Anyway, thank you for bringing up this discussion on your podcast.

As a skateboarder back in the day. I think we looked down on inline skating on parks because tricks didn't look nearly as hard or good as with a skateboard. We though "What's the point?" or "That is cheating". I think the market trying to put inline skating on par with skateboarding hurt inline skating. I don't blame them either, aggressive skating was legit for inline skaters and it was evolving fast.
It wasn't until I got myself into inline skates (no ramps, more wizard and figure) when I fully understood how cool and technically demanding the discipline is.

i think they just wana be petty and take shots cause skateboarding is on a decline.....but i mean we can all be petty and just say SKATEBOARDERS are NOT SKATERS.......skaters was derived from Figure Skaters...soo...lets be petty lol ...this why i keep a 90s mindset..... as far as parks go... simple fix....start companies that build parks specific for Bladers and quads ,Down to details round rails only , different transitions, etc... seems to me in a broad view...they want the division...more then even now...

Dave and Tony should have retired 10 years ago. Im tired of caring what old dudes think or say about rollerblading.
If you are in a postition in the rollerblading community to highlight a skater under 30 (under 21 is even better), please do so. Pro skates should be for the next generation. Start more skate camps. Time to let go of the gates.

i don’t think this was some elaborate plot big-skateboard thought up to thwart rollerbladers, i don’t think they think of us rollerbladers at all. i think a guy who runs alt-sports related media publications would see the hole in the market for roller skate publications/outlets and decided to tap in. we as a inline community really need to stop putting so much emotion and thought into every roller/inline skate we spot in a piece of media. ie the whole “barbie saved rollerblading” era.
