Those first 15 seconds of "Ghost Train" gave me absolute nightmares for years. Unbelievable atmosphere and visuals created in a matter of seconds.

Honestly I think some the spooky episodes of Thomas are both better and scarier than a good chunk of horror movies

    • @greninjazac4577

I mean, it makes sense, the best horror movies rely more on their atmosphere then just jumpscares. The Stone Tapes is a great example

Considering a lot of horror movies are so B line with oh no an accident happened and now the psycho is a (insert whatever they’ve become here) Jack Frost, Gingerdead Man, Kill Joy, they all follow that plot line.
Not to mention I got to love how the fandom makes better scary stories just solely relying on this franchise and it just works! That’s a bonus

Yeah. Though, admittedly, I feel like Halloween did the better job in the atmosphere.
Plus, the musical score that plays after the sheet landed on Emily, honestly sounded like something out of a classic Resident Evil game. Like, compare it to some of the music from say, RE 2 & 3, and you might get what I mean.

Thomas was all I would ever watch since the vcr days as a kid in fact it was the first program I’ve watched ever and was glued to it until age 9. As a 23 almost 24 year old Watching this is bringing back great nostalgia and days where things were so much simpler. Most of this stuff went over my head especially the spookiness and life lessons. Thank you for the video, you’ve earned yourself another subscriber. Cheers 🥂

I think that the two parter about Duke, the lost Engine, perfectly lives up to the two sided nature. The first part talks about how Duke was seemingly lost forever when his line closed down and nobody bought him because they considered him too old and him being left alone in the shed while the land around it was left to be reclaimed by nature was a really, beyond sad episode, but bleak.
On the other hand, the second part of the story was genuinely heart warming, making it clear that Duke wasn't forgotten, far from it, and that people set out to find him, ultimately succeeding, reuniting him with his old friends, Stuart and Falcon (later rechristened Peter Sam and Sir Handel)

Honestly, this show conditioned me to be afraid of owls when I was a little kid, and I didn't even know about the whole 180° neck turning thing. Seriously, whenever I heard their hoots or whatever, I just knew I was in for a scary episode.

If you wanna feel some of that childhood fear of owls in Thomas again and don't mind some psychological horror, I'd have a look at The Blue Snowplow's series The Horrors at Hawin Lake, in particular part 2, as that features an owl most prominently.

5:35-5:37, I love the echo effect for that shout, it sends a shiver through me every time and I find it annoying that it's not included in some versions of Haunted Henry.
The echo adds a slight spookiness to it and it seems to lose a bit of that magic when it's not included.

Love it. Thomas could always tell a good scary story. For me 'Haunted Henry' is always a personal favourite. And every year on Halloween I watch the TUGS episode 'Ghosts'. I'd love to see the best 'Sad' and 'Happy' episodes. What about the most dramatic episodes/best accidents. (I can imagine it would be between James and the tar wagons or Gordon crashing through the station wall.) Would you consider doing the opposite as well, for example boring or bland episodes of the classic era? Episodes that could have been more enjoyable. You will always get bad episodes in a good series.

Totally agree. I really enjoyed them as a kid and I still do. I will admit Stepney Gets Lost kinda scared me the first time watching it, but in some extent I knew he will be fine. I also didn’t know what they meant by getting scraped. It’s disturbing when you realize how dark this show is. The CGI series did have a couple of spooky episodes like The Phantom Express and Diesel’s Ghostly Christmas, since the ghost scenes do feel like Halloween and great animation. It’s cool how Diesel’s Ghostly Christmas can be like A Christmas Carol while feeling like Halloween. Sort of like The Nightmare Before Christmas one of my favorite movies and my favorite Halloween movie. My favorite being Haunted Henry because great atmosphere and good performances. It’s also good because unlike Percy’s Ghosty Trick and Duncan Gets Spooked, Scaredy Engines, Halloween, The Phantom Express, and Diesel’s Ghosty Christmas we are not aware who it is that is spooky and it wasn’t even a trick.

Personally I loved the original series (and to some extent the HIT era) for the model work; being a model maker I appreciated the skill which went into them. The new CGI, well, I like the variety and general accuracy of the many new characters - but don't know whether to laugh, cry or despair about the impossibilities introduced into the stories. As for the ghosts - well, 'Ghost Train' as you say is the only original, canonical Awdry story, and was meant to be funny. They seem to have proliferated on youtube, from various sources of late. Some are very good - some, indeed, I feel Rev Awdry would approve of, others, well........ they get darker, and are certainly not pitched for children (There's an exe murderer ghost, for example.)
Again, on a personal level, I love the Skarloey stories - the incredible visual charm of the sets is top of the line.

The scariest for me is ‘spooky engines’, for its aggressive use of the colour red,
The pieces of scrap that actually twisted from being animated shook me to the core, since they may have well been parts off, well, the living engines of sodor. For me, Its like industrial gore seeing those parts strewn and hung about in the scrapyard.
And don’t get me started on the opening scene! while the ghost of duncan gets spooked was mysterious, i wasn’t really scared by it because it was a slower, paler ghost that served more as a warning then anything else. Compare that to the deep crimson of the smelting shed, which felt large and appearing to have several layers like a gritty metallic hell, and seeing this dark figure of an engine rushing through in the background as if it was a malicious creature. that is a combination that makes my spine sieze up in absolute terror.
Jack frost is funny though, i liked that one
