The British commando raids is easily one of the most exciting and fascinating source of stories to come out of World war 2, along with the various naval engagements. Loving this! Top quality work. Hope you have the raid on St. Nazaire or on the Norwegian heavy water plants in the pipeline :D
Interesting fact, the name commando comes from the boer Kommando's in the boer war from 1899-1902, where Churchill was stationed for a while. He was so impressed by their skill on horseback, marksmanship and fast raids against the British he brought the concept to Britain.
0:51 "However, aboard the converted landing ships, Prince Charles..." Holy crap, Prince Charles was on a commando raid in Norway?!? "... and Prince Leopold, ..." Ohhhhhh.
Haha those 2 destroyers look like they were having a blast in that fjord. God I love these videos. By far my favorite format of war docs. I just love the format and style. It shows you the visual movements, detailed larger scale movements, missing some context but short of that there's few other information sources I've found that give such an accurate overview. Really the only thing I would like added is maybe some initial rundown (or an info bar off to side) of combatants and units involved. Get to see some division emblems or ship seals/crests or whatever. With pictures of captains or leaders etc.
@@TheOperationsRoomThere is quite a lot of good stuff from Norway during the 2nd WW, we really gave'em something to chew on, Say, Operations Room - will you do one on Rjukan as well? (The deuterium raid thingy)???
As an amateur military analyst and (hopefully) a soon to be infantry officer, my favorite content on armed conflict has never been the grand battles involving hundreads of thousands of men, but the small engagements fought by at most a few companies of men, in which the tactics, leadership and innitiative of the men on the ground decide the battle. This is by far my favorite content on this channel and frankly, probably on the whole of RUclips, and the level of detail and production quality are astonishing. Keep up the good work man.
Man, could you imagine being on leave from Operation Barbarossa thinking it'll be a chill couple weeks in Norway, then the Royal Navy shows up and wipes out your entire platoon. Rest in peace German lads.
Always a good day when Operations Room throws us a bone. Excellent video as usual. Edit: it must fucking SUCK to try and fight a pair of destroyers with small arms, only to catch a reply of 4inch and 40mm.
Commando CO: right lads, only take vitals and make sure we make as little noise as possible, surprise and stealth is of the utmost importance Jack Churchill: *packs stealthy bagpipes and vital broadsword*
Churchill was also the first man to ride the Severn Bore on a Surf board ! (a tidal wave that runs the length of England`s longest river, the river Severn)
Really enjoyed this episode of The Operations Room. Great production quality and lots of interesting parts to the story. Mad Jack Churchill has got to be one of the greatest soldiers to have ever lived!
Love the transition to the satellite map, and good job on the Norwegian pronunciation. Foreigners usually get our three different letters (Æ, Ø and Å) wrong, but you nailed it! Edit: one minor nitpick is that Linge is pronounced Ling-eh and not Ling-ee. We pronounce the letter E differently than in English.
Exceptional video as always! The war in Norway is fascinating and so undocumented in popular history so thank you for bringing this incredible operation to light! A stunning display of combined armed forces working as one.
The one thing people may not realise about these amazing recreations, or at least one thing I'd like to highlight, is that when simple terms such as, but are not limited to, "they cleared the area" are used, that almost means that they just shot dead x number of enemy soldiers, but the way it is portrayed here is that they just took over the place and that was that. Not that it changes much, but it is important to note the brutality of what is being depicted in such beautiful art form.
I heard of -1 of US battleship- USS Wisconsin that were fired upon by North Korean during Korean War. They tried to sink the ship by using their -howitzers- 6 inch gun batteries, so naturally the BB swung her 406mm guns towards them and fired. The US troops later said that they only found massive craters.
Vaguely remember a story of allied troops in Normandy calling in battleship fire on advancing German tanks. Apparently the blasts were so strong the tanks got tossed about, landing on their sides. I think the last case of battleships providing fire support was the first gulf war
@@PresidentEvilX yeah they do we lost a lot of guys in norway fighting for their country after they surrendered quickly, they should have went full on guerilla, norway has the terrain to fight a war like that, instead their leadership leaves the country and their army drop their arms.
I believe that our national Christmas tree was always a gift from Norway. When I was a little boy 60 years ago, I recall my mam telling me that it was a gift from Norway to thank " our boys" as she called them, for all the help they gave Norway.
Living in Norway and not far away, I had heard of the raid, but was never sure of the exact location. I was surprised to see it all happen where I have sailed and visited many times. There's a large road bridge across the sound now linking Maloy to the mainland, thearea where the merchant ships were, I actually stopped there for fuel. The island with the gun emplacements now has a mole linking it to Maloy.

Another superb and well produced video from The Operations Room.👍🥇 This brings back memories for me, as when I first joined the Corp, we were told this tale by one of our weapons instructors, who's father was actually part of this raid and one of the reasons he wanted to join up. After we came out of this tale of our predecessors actions, we walked back to our pits realising that stories like this, was just one of the reasons that we had joined the finest corp in world. The research on this raid makes the discovery channel stuff look amateur. I've been aware of this battle for years as my father was a Commando (not on this raid though, served with Churchill in Salerno) but the presentation of this production gives so much additional information.. Great work
I'm really pleased that I found this video. i had not heard of this operation before and the way it was presented was the clearest representation I have seen thus far. You're to be congratulated on a superb telling of the operation. I look forward to seeing more of your offerings.
Phenomenal video, you’ve nailed a winning formula with this RTS style. Love the videos. Would love to see one on the second D-Day in Southern France, definitely a lesser known part of liberation of Europe.
Only bad thing i have to say is ive seen all videos on the channel (binged that stuff like crazy) and im seriously craving more! Great job sir, really great job!
Thank you for covering this battle. Actions like these are obscured by the passage of time and by the ease of reporting the larger, most consequential battles. This one, however, strikes me as a perfect reminder of the pluck, audacity and cunning of the Brits in WWII.
Just brilliant, well done, I have never heard about this raid, these young men were so brave and risked everything, thank you so much for your hard work and research, loved it❤️
Wonderful stuff. This raid reminds me of the battles on South Georgia during the Falklands War. In the Battle of Grytviken 22 marines with only small arms sunk an enemy corvette and shot down a helicopter before eventually surrendering to a much larger force. The island was recaptured 3 weeks later in Operation Paraquet by special forces in appalling conditions without a single casualty. Could we have a video covering either (or both) of these battles please?
That bagpiper was an absolute legend, broadsword included. This is why I love this channel--I learn more about battles I already knew about, and then there are episodes like this where I've never even heard of the battle being described. Very cool.

@ 11:15 "fire and movement" or as in my experience "fire and maneuver" is MADLY EXHAUSTING!! I'll attempt to communicate this to the uninitiated the very basic small unit tactic of advancing thru the objective or retreating while "Attempting" to coordinate: odd-even rushes where every other man (odd for this example) lays suppressing fire from available cover while the (even) other men rush forward less than 3 seconds then hit the deck and roll to available cover and then lay suppressing fire for the (odd) men to then rush forward, repeat until objective is seized. Whew! Words can not express the experience. There's also a somewhat more coordinated movement where selected individuals are positioned as a "Base of Fire". That group may consist of Automatic Riflemen w/ M249 SAW, M60 or M240B, or perhaps the same weapons as the "Maneuver Element" with extra ammunition. That Base of Fire lays constant suppressive fire while the Manouver Element advance towards the objective. When the Maneuver Element is close enough to the objective a signal is used to alert the Base of Fire to either cease fire or shift that fire away from friendlies, or continue to engage targets of opportunity while the objective is secured. Whew. I left a TON of information out, but I just wanted to try and convey that "fire and movement" is insanely intense.
Only one thing to say after watching this: wow! Especially the part about Mad Jack Churchill! Well done! If your going to another clip about world war 2 battles/secret operations. I recommend the Raid on St. Nazaire.
Very neat video! Could i suggest the X MAS Raid on the port of Alexandria for a future video? It's a very incredible event of WW2 that often cgoes unnoticed!
In case you're not aware, the channel Historigraph has a rexent video on the raid. If you're not familiar with that channel, it is similarly excellent and worth a look.
I can't imagine being one of the civilians evacuated from the town. You're sitting around having coffee when out of nowhere come hundreds of commandos from Britain and your own nation, who proceed to kill or drive off the Germans, destroy much of the town, burn down all the fish oil factories and then finish up with "Hey, you guys want to get out of here?"
Toothless ;) Tell that to the Japanese cruiser the USS Johnston sunk (DD-557). It was part of a destroyer force (escorting light carriers) that drove off an attack by the largest battleship in the world, Yamato, and her supporting ships. This saved the troop transport ships and supply ships of the Americans in the battle of Leyte Gulf. The Japanese baited the Americans into drawing off their battleships and carriers to sink some sacrificial carriers. Two Groups pounced on the landing site, but the Southern one was driven off before it could arrive at its target. The Northern one (Yamato force) greeted the light carriers with shell splashes, The Captain of the Johnston didn't wait for orders and charged the task force. Their torpedo salvo resulted in a hit that blew the bow off of the lead cruiser. Since it charged, the enemy assumed it was a cruiser and the fleet used armor piercing shells instead of high explosives, so their rounds just went through the Johnston which allowed it to stay in the fight almost until the end. Their bravery and courage convinced the enemy they were fighting cruisers and fleet carriers instead of destroyers and light carriers, so they eventually withdrew. Seeing the Johnston charge, the US carrier commander ordered the other destroyers to attack with torpedo's. The Johnston battered and moving slow, turned around to provide gun support for the torpedo attack of the rest of the squadron. Later it engaged 11 destroyers and turned them off of a torpedo attack on the light carriers, forcing them to fire too soon and miss. (The enemy destroyers were well aware a single destroyer shell would detonate their volatile torpedo's on deck. A squadron of Destroyers along with concentrated fire from the big ships was too much for the Johnston to survive and as it sunk, rumors of the Japanese sailors saluting as they sailed by were reported. Captain Evan's was wounded in the early fighting and moved to the rear of his destroyer when his bridge was destroyed and gave orders to the engine room down below. He had been wounded and refused to give up command. He ordered his ship abandoned when it was dead in the water and sinking, he made it into the water after making sure his men were off the boat, but was never recovered. Medal of honor winner.

The British commando raids is easily one of the most exciting and fascinating source of stories to come out of World war 2, along with the various naval engagements. Loving this! Top quality work. Hope you have the raid on St. Nazaire or on the Norwegian heavy water plants in the pipeline :D
Waiting for them
You should watch Ray Mear's Real Heroes of Telemark series, I think its on youtube
Interesting fact, the name commando comes from the boer Kommando's in the boer war from 1899-1902, where Churchill was stationed for a while. He was so impressed by their skill on horseback, marksmanship and fast raids against the British he brought the concept to Britain.
*Bagpipes start*
Me: Oh, goddammit, of course that guy is there.
Those sailors who took on a British destroyer with one little 20mm canon were brave men. They knew it was a suicide mission but went anyways.
And the fight on from the beach with rifles
The animation in this video is even more superb than usual! Bravo!
Thank you very much!
I agree it's getting better with each video 👍
@@darthhatchet775 yes they are so much more polished and immersive now
Any animation is 150% better when you suddenly fade out the standard background music and let the bagpipes play.
0:51 "However, aboard the converted landing ships, Prince Charles..."
Holy crap, Prince Charles was on a commando raid in Norway?!?
"... and Prince Leopold, ..."
Ohhhhhh.
Made me double take too.
😂
They brought Mad Jack Churchill. They can't possibly fail!
Their option was bring another destroyer or bring Mad Jack. They made the right decision that day.
@@mig0150 they should've needed another destroyer just to carry the weight of Mad Jacks massive balls.
Brit Commandos are the real deal, all props from your brothers in the States.
I've never heard of this operation before, thanks for educating us on something so interesting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@TheOperationsRoomThere is quite a lot of good stuff from Norway during the 2nd WW, we really gave'em something to chew on, Say, Operations Room - will you do one on Rjukan as well? (The deuterium raid thingy)???
They didn’t call him “Mad Jack” for nothing.
Only a Scotsman 🏴 would assault a gun battery with a sword and bagpipes
As an amateur military analyst and (hopefully) a soon to be infantry officer, my favorite content on armed conflict has never been the grand battles involving hundreads of thousands of men, but the small engagements fought by at most a few companies of men, in which the tactics, leadership and innitiative of the men on the ground decide the battle.
This is by far my favorite content on this channel and frankly, probably on the whole of RUclips, and the level of detail and production quality are astonishing.
Keep up the good work man.
This channel is literally the meaning of Quality over Quantity
"Move the landing craft closer to the enemy I want to hit them with my broadsword" - Mad Jack
Man, could you imagine being on leave from Operation Barbarossa thinking it'll be a chill couple weeks in Norway, then the Royal Navy shows up and wipes out your entire platoon. Rest in peace German lads.
They were NAZIs, and I'm thrilled to hear they rest in pieces, lol
Operations Room is giving us 4-5 videos a month now. The world is a better place
The amount of work it would take to put one of these videos together would be enormous.
"Stopping only to throw grenades" wonderful.
Always a good day when Operations Room throws us a bone. Excellent video as usual.
Edit: it must fucking SUCK to try and fight a pair of destroyers with small arms, only to catch a reply of 4inch and 40mm.
Those Germans brought rifles to a -Naval-Gunfight‼
Despite his uniform being temporarily aflame, he began storming the coast.
I'm speechless at the bravery and sacrifice of these men.
Commando CO: right lads, only take vitals and make sure we make as little noise as possible, surprise and stealth is of the utmost importance
Jack Churchill: *packs stealthy bagpipes and vital broadsword*
Churchill was also the first man to ride the Severn Bore on a Surf board ! (a tidal wave that runs the length of England`s longest river, the river Severn)
TOR, your work is terrific and informative. These 15 minute snippets of animation and chronology of action are better than many documentaries. Bravo.
Is that a new mapping tool? Looks great!
As usual, superbly researched and cleverly animated. This has become one of my favorite channels. New Patreon supporter. Keep up the great work.
Thanks and welcome aboard!
I never thought about massive naval guns being fired on infantry before, damn.
As a Norwegian i feel like it cant be said enough, thank you for your help Britain
You guys pulled your own weight aswell, no need to thank us.
The British were prepping to invade Norway and only stopped because Germany narrowly beat them to it. Operation Wilfred and Plan R4.
You know they only helped us because we took away German manpower :)
My Dad was on Kenya and my uncle was with the commandos during this raid - thank you for uploading.
Mad Jack Churchill was not a man to be trifled with especially when encumbered with bagpipes and ceremonial broadsword.
I look forward to each Operations Room video, and am never disappointed. If I'm not mistaken, you are approaching your two year mark, and have earned each of your patrons and subscribers. I find your formula for pacing, play-by-play content, graphics, and narration is exceptionally well done. You are a true talent! Thanks for all your hard work (I hope young history students discover your channel, I wish it had been around when I was a kid :).
Wow, thank you for the kind words
"You need to silence all the guns on that heavily fortified island right there."
"Yes sir, of course."
"What weapons will you be using?"
"Bagpipes!"
Another superb and well produced video from The Operations Room.👍🥇
This brings back memories for me, as when I first joined the Corp, we were told this tale by one of our weapons instructors, who's father was actually part of this raid and one of the reasons he wanted to join up.
After we came out of this tale of our predecessors actions, we walked back to our pits realising that stories like this, was just one of the reasons that we had joined the finest corp in world.
Thank you so much for putting this up. 👍
It’s a fearsome history to live up to, best of luck to you.
@@petersone6172 It was and we tried our best to live up to what they started all those years ago, but my best days are behind me now as I have been out since 1979. The only real regret I have is that I'm just far to old to go and play with the lads anymore, as it wasn't a job, it was just what we did and never really wanted to do anything else. (I really, really miss those days)
Brilliantly narrated as always. I'm quite sure, when the Germans on that little island heard Mad Jack play "boss music" on his pipes, they must have soiled their breeches severely. Thank you and regards from Hamburg.
A high quality video in terms of content, animation and presentation. Like the new mapping graphics. Spread the word to help support this RUclips gem. It has all the potential to be one of the leading history animation RUclips channels.
It's a shame that a video of kittens gets 7 million views , but a guy who does this much work to bring ad free, educational content gets a few hundred thousand. Good work mate keep it up. You deserve more.
The background music for all of your videos just fit in so perfectly :)
YES! Another video! I couldn't wait for the next video! Thank you so much!
Thanks!
@@TheOperationsRoom No, thank you!!
These just get better and better. Keep them coming.
This channel has the production quality of something you'd see on TV. But it's informational and isn't sensational. Unlike something you'd see on TV.
Always loved the top-down situational analysis view of the battlefield.
30 mins and I got my coffee and joint ready for THIS
Shout-out to the boys on the Föhn giving their lives to save the sailors in the merchant ships
"Admirable, but futile."
Bravery knows no nationality.
Phenomenal video, you’ve nailed a winning formula with this RTS style. Love the videos.
Would love to see one on the second D-Day in Southern France, definitely a lesser known part of liberation of Europe.
Great suggestion!
Unbelievable how well executed this was with so many moving parts
Awesome animations also guys
Love how the Brits always break out the bagpipes in the middle of a fire fight!!
I'm sure there was time for some tea too
@@ianchapman4274 Because it works!!!
You would shiting yourself in you were a German manning a 'quiet' post until you hear that along with a volley of grenades
Oh, I love the switch from the standard background music to the bagpipes! Awesome!
Your production values keep getting better, and they were already good, especially for a small channel like this. Great content, as always.
Much appreciated!
Very cool.
I just found your channel. Liked and subbed. Duuuude, your animations and narration of the video is top notch. Thanks!

I live in Iceland, Fish oil is consumed as a valuable source of vitamin D, which sunlight deprived submarine crews would have needed. The video says vitamin A, which is not taken as a dietary supplement in Europe.
Awesome video, appreciate the inclusion of mad jack. He is an absolute legend!
You come back from the gates of Moscow for a quiet Christmas break and this happens.
I was thinking the same, the Gebirgsjager thought they would have it easy in Norway xD
the quality just keeps going up. very well done
Whew. I left a TON of information out, but I just wanted to try and convey that "fire and movement" is insanely intense.
i swear i love your channel, you're the only one i've found in whole youtube that analyses battle operations instead of a political point of view
Only one thing to say after watching this: wow! Especially the part about Mad Jack Churchill!
Well done! If your going to another clip about world war 2 battles/secret operations. I recommend the Raid on St. Nazaire.
Good one!

Vitamin D is what you need if deprived of sunlight. Fish oil has both A and D in it. Great Video!
Glycerin also , used in the manufacture of explosives !
Yet another fascinating video and really well paced. Love the use of the map graphics, the extra detail really brings things to life
Many thanks!
When the destroyer opened fire at close range at the German platoon, I was like F_____! I could not imagine that heavy amount of fire..
Dude your content is getting better and better! I love this channel. Keep up the hard work we appreciate it!
Thanks! Will do!
I wonder just how many stayed, married and had kids, who would now be as old as me and just how many Anglo Norwegian citizens we have from this raid.
I really do love your battle maps, and they're getting better with every installment.
I'm used to destroyers being toothless cannon fodder in naval engagements. In a close sea support/commando ferry role they dominate the battlefield!
This videos production quality is amazing
Anyone else remained of the episode of "citation needed" by Tom Scott about the absolute Mad Lad Churchill ? :)
