Whats crazy is that Thao's tiny desk concert some 6-7 years ago was my first time even hearing of NPR music. I was in middle school and just finding out (mostly thanks to NPR) that indie music is actually a thing. That discovery sort of changed my life tho. Independent music and the surrounding community really mean a lot to me now. Funny to see things come full circle I guess.
Don't get me wrong I love this band but they cannot sing live well at all. The studio versions are amazing. Her voice is very unique but when she sings Live it's almost like she's not trying. Don't get me wrong, her voice is unique abd purposely strange like that. But you still gotta warm up and prepare to sing. That way you can use the weirdness of your voice and still sound good. But with Thao us like she dosent even try to sing live. Kinda weird cause her voice in the studio versions is ammazing!
It definitely doesn’t sound as good as the album version, but I think Thao focuses on expressing emotion and movement when playing live (she’s said so in some interviews). She has an amazing stage presence and her show was one of the best I’ve attended. Also the mix here is pretty bad lol
Me being and idiot (which incidentally is true) has nothing to do with how badly she sings (let alone the heinous guitar solo). Liking the band or not is subjective. Her being out of tune is not.
This live version captures her emotions more than the album did and I wasn't sure how this album could get any better!
