    Cheap Chinese Kapton tape. Does it work?
    Needed a couple of rolls of Kapton tape. Found some cheap on AliExpress. Had to try it out and thought I would make a little video.

      Probably because they've seen other cheap tape tests which fail well below 280C.

    Hi, could I use kapton tape for a plastic hinge to prevent it from warping, say for Nintendo 3ds handheld console?

    Sir can i put this on COB(black epoxy blob) and pass Chip On Board(COB) fron wave soldering machine? WOULD I BE ABLE TO PREVENT DAMAGING OF COB WHEN MOLTEN SOLDER TOUCHES ITS BLACK SURFACE IN WAVE SOLDERING MACHINE?

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  5 лет назад

      Possibly. It depends on the epoxy in the cob as well as the time spent in the soldering bath. The COB is usually the same internally as most other microcontrollers but it relies on the epoxy for its protection. The other factors include solder bath temperature, lead or non lead solder, pcb thickness, epoxy thickness, internal structure of the cob and many other variables. The cob manufacturer would be the best to advise on the flow solder parameters as they will have all of the details of the chip manufacture and the epoxy that encloses it.

    George use for insulating winding's on transformers and such. 2 or 3 different width rolls. comes in handy:>)

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  5 лет назад

      Indeed. Any application where good insulation along with high temperature protection is needed.

    Thanks George, I did not know what Kapton tape was! but now I do Thanks again. John ( Also your fingers wear very close to the soldering iron lol )

      No Problem John. As for fingers being close to the iron.. they have been closer!!😉

    Hi George, Now I know what Kapton tape is, Thanks. Also I thought your fingers where very close to the iron lol. ( do you have many burns?. :)

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  6 лет назад

      No, surprisingly, I have very few burns. I think it comes down to age and practice. When you first start soldering you tend to get burnt a bit more but I have been doing it long enough now to sort of guess just before my fingers touch the iron.

    Is kapton electrically conductive? Can i use for electrical wire? Oven or electronical device

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  3 года назад +2

      Kapton is a good insulator so can be used much like ordinary electrical tape but in high temperature situations

  • @paul-c7541
    @paul-c7541 3 года назад +1

    I've known people use it for insulating transistors from the heatsink instead of pads, I have no idea how good it is for that.

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  2 года назад

      I have not tried it for that purpose, preferring mica for that

  • @ccymi6a494

    Most things would burn or melt down once it was set on 🔥, incl. the non-inflamable. Kapton should be a high-temp resistance stuff instead. Please advise further...

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  3 года назад +2

      Kapton has two main properties. High temperature resistance and the ability to self extinguish should flame be present.

    hello george do you think buying from a brand like 3m would help heat transfer faster or better? i have a brushless motor controller i would like to pull more amps out so i put a lil bit of solder on the shunt and i was told ina forum that by getting a better brand kapton tape i would be able to pull even more amps dont know is this is true but i was thinking of giving it a try . thanks

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  4 года назад

      I'm not really sure. I know that you will pay more for branded but it's not a conductive layer but a thermal barrier. It is designed to be used as protection from heat to whatever it covers rather than heat transfer.

    • @bigfirepop

      In short, insulation helps to reduce what is referred to as 'electrical leakage' among other reasons but in as to why another brand, that could be thickness or just overall reliability/quality of the product.

  • @kornshadow097
    @kornshadow097 6 лет назад +1

    So does this insulate heat or can it be used on heating elements while allowing heat to escape through the tape?

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  6 лет назад

      It is a high temperature electrical insulator. If you need to protect components from heat or keep high temperature parts isolated from each other electrically then kapton is ideal. It's other property that I demonstrated in the video is that it does not support combustion so in the event of a component causing a flame it will not burn but self extinguish.

    • @kornshadow097
      @kornshadow097 6 лет назад +1

      George Christofi ok high temp electrical insulator got it. Second part makes it confusing... So it's not a thermal insulator, just electrical insulator correct?

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  6 лет назад

      @@kornshadow097 it does thermally insulate too. If you were using hot air to reflow solder on and boards you can protect the other components using it.

    Does the original Kapton tape also has that adhesive strength?

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  5 лет назад +3

      I believe it does. To be honest, I haven't used genuine branded tape now for a very long time because of the cost.

  • @czj6448

    Is it ESD safe when unwrapping it?

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  6 лет назад

      I would imagine so as the material is inherently ESD safe. As it is non conductive I cannot see it generating static.

    • @czj6448
      @czj6448 6 лет назад +1

      It actually has two variation (static/anti-static) www.antistat.co.uk/product/kapton-tape/. I Hope I didn't get the one without antistatic as I intend to use them on PCA and inside EPA.

    • @bigfirepop
      @bigfirepop 3 года назад

      @@czj6448 even anti static kapton tape will produce static. It is however less charge held overall.
