Its a cool truck, it deserves to be on the road.
I hope you are thinking of pulling the crank out of the block making sure to get all the oil passages in the crank and block clean its very important especially with the sludge I saw in poor Richards heart you dont want to give him a stroke lol.
Keep going! It is good
That engine looks like it was healthy until the flood water and gunk intrusion.
Thank you Dr. Art!. Can't wait to see how it turns out. I have a budget '76 318LA I'm building. Watching the steps you've performed along with Uncle Tonys direction has sure made me feel confident that I've done a good job. I'll be finishing it up in a month or two. A little nervous about the cam break-in but.. It'll either work or it won't. I have maybe $500 in it so far..
Considering this motor was as nasty as it was it's looking prety good. There's still a whole truck to play with though.
Great format for your videos too, easy to watch, no fluf. Thanks
Nice job on the tear down Dr. Art, it really doesn't look that bad once you see it all apart. Can't wait to see you put it back together and put it in Big Richard and fire er up..
Nice work Dr Art! Having the skills to do this work and bringing a old vehicle back to life on a budget is good stuff! This world is nuts with current day costs on vehicles and repairs. Dropping just under 600 at this point brings some sanity back to us all!

...That's incredulous!
Im in. Im not a poly fan,but im excited at the outcome.
Its amazing how small them valves are! Otherwise, looks pretty damn good, for being not very good.
Thanks for showing breakdown of cost. Not many do that.
Sounds good, so what you're saying is when I'm ready to do a refresh on an engine to get a hold of you for a free cam. I like it.😁👍
When doing a rebuild ensure someone “gifts” you a cam and lifters.
Very good video - actually the whole process on this engine is a good thing to see for any of us who might have an engine we want to tear apart, overhual, and get running.
Also, I like how you are doing your videos - just showing viewers the important stuff, unlike some who will record 15 minutes of them tearing something apart or washing off an engine, etc. Thumbs up!
Thank you very much!
Yup quick and simple
Look's like it'll freshen up nicely......and a lot cheaper than what I spent rebuilding the 340 in the 69 Dart gts I had. Lol It was worth it, I spared no expense, X block and heads, she was a beastly tire burner. Oh well, had her for 11 years and enjoyed the hell outa that car!
15 year old vehicles seem to be the magic number for good cheap vehicles that run and drive.
Good video.
...and that SUX. I grew up in the golden age, buying Chargers and Super Bees for a few hundred. Big blocks littered the junk yards. I miss those days. 15 year ago cars were junk. I got an 01 suburban and the dash is peeling.
Any attempt at checking to see if the valves sealed before tearing it apart. A little alcohol or gas into the ports to see if the valves seal is a good way to see which areas need more work and attention.
Dr. Art: Your operating table looks like the patient is on the way to the morgue! 😆 I know the ole girl is in good hands and will purrr like a kitten!
I sound like a broken record on this, but I keep saying it. When doing an engine replace core plugs, all of them on the block, and heads are like 20 bucks. They rust on the inside so may look good on the outside but be paper thin. Plus there's an amazing amount of crap in the water jackets.
I always just wack the all valve springs with the socket and hammer straight away.
Good news the heads are in good shape, and the budget is still under control. Thanks for the update.
The only thing I would do since your there is treat it to some main bearings. Other than that good show.
When you go over to Tony's, grab his "new" eBay ECU for the Jeep and take it home. Please, please install some good high quality caps before he starts making runs. If it gets into semi failure mode he'll chase the tune and waste time ...
Good so far on Big Richard 😁
Good video but I would have liked to have seen how you removed the valves.
Flannel X ray vision. Don't tell my wife it exists.
Considering the year of the heads I would recommend adding hardened valve seats if your unleaded is hell on them
It takes a long time for that to become a factor.
There are mid 70s smog heads so they have the hard seats
The 1967 (and some early 1968) 318 cylinder blocks are thick enough for a 4.00" bore. The same casting was originally going to be used in a high performance engine in the 1967 Dodge Dart, to compete with the 327 Chevy II. It had a 4 inch bore, but had 318 valve sizes. Its performance was so disappointing, that it was scratched from production for 1967, but led to the 340 in 1968. The original plan was to have the 1967 383 Barracuda compete with the 390 Mustang and the 4 inch bore small block was to be in the 1967 Dart to compete with the 67 327 Chevy II. The early 67 Barracuda did get the 383, but the 67 Dart didn't get the 383 until late in the model year, because it was supposed to get its own high performance small block engine instead of a big block.
Cool video Brotha!!!
Pray no wiped camlobe at start up, I used break in oil, spun the oil pump at distributor and 2k rpm , chevy 454
So, Tony's got a week. : )
Good luck with that
@@gulfy09 Probably could do it in under 2 hours - in his sleep. 🤪
probably a stupid question but did anyone remember to clean all that crud out of
all the oil passages
👌🏼⛽️
I'm enjoying these videos.
Shouldn't the valve seats be hardened for unleaded gas, or are they already? Does it really matter?
It depends on the year of the engine if it has hardened seats or not it probably should though
Here in Toronto Canada they still sell lead additive.
No, it’s like a 73 smog motor has harden seats
Don’t give the transmission to Tony. He will neutral drop it and destroy it.
Tony runs on smokes and caffeine. Might want to drop some off lol
Yup some Expresso coffee will give him a booster.. after all he's a Italian whop just like me
Head work? Am I supposed to tell you the first thing that comes to mind when you show me oil blots? Go for the "fast burn" heads. Woke my little mill right up!
What kind of 'Big Richard' would add up receipts? It's Blasphemy
Are those harded seats on the exhaust
Yes, they are mid 70s smog heads
Thanks
You going to boil the heads and bead blast ?
No, none of that this time it’s kind of a cheap and dirty rebuild not those not any of those are a bad idea just not this time
Is there a way to tell if they are hardened seat or not. I have a 1970 d 200. I believe it is the original engine. I have been adding lead substitute. Do i need to?
This one is a mid 70s smog motor that’s been transplanted so yes it does have the hardened seats and I believe being a 70. You should be OK with just a regular unleaded fuel
I highly doubt this guy is a Doctor. Because if Art was he would of fixed up Uncle Tony. Lol..
Cheap. Especially if you have a good friend that buys the cam and lifters.
