Being in the U.K. in my twilight years , waiting on gods bus, I’m unlikely to visit any of the stores named outside of RUclips videos, but I found this video extremely enjoyable. Thank you
Great video, Mr. Maslov! - I've been vinyl shopping for over 45 years & also worked in record stores for around a decade before moving into the distribution side of things >>> started my own record label, etc., etc. In my, behind-the-counter, record store days - 3 different stores - the store policy, re; used/new vinyl sleeve price stickers was... we placed the price sticker on the outer plastic sleeve which were easily removable, but we used a very blunt pencil and wrote the price and the filing number on the inside of the LP/12"/7" sleeve, *extremely lightly*, so no damage or indentation was done to the sleeve at all & also, to make sure no customer tried to tamper with the price, etc.. The pencilled-in price & filing # were extremely easy to erase... when a customer bought a record, one of our staff would use a simple eraser and remove the inside-sleeve price/file number >>then easily remove the outer price sticker >>> so we could give the customer their purchse *and a free* protective pvc outer sleeve. For outer CD cases, we used non-removable price stickers... but when a customer bought a CD, we swapped the stickered CD jewel-case and re-housed the CD in a brand new CD case, again... for free. (We recycled all our old outer plastic-sleeves and CD cases). Simple task for our staff which made for a happy, satisfied customer w/ their purchase - completely unspoiled, i.e., as it originally arrived at our store from the distributor/orig. seller **A 100% win/win for everyone, and, so, so easy for the store staff to do.** I've been a music collector for over 45 years and your topic is *so important* for all of us record store customers/collectors, & *so infuriating* when you find a title you really have been after for the longest of time and some bozo-headed, lazy half-wit has put a non-removable sticker on an expensive vinyl picture sleeve.... or worse; used an ink-ballpoint or a sharpie to write on the inside sleeve... There's absolutely *no excuse* for this pig-ignorant practice. I mean, would an antique store do this on any of their items??? All the very best to you & all the other commenters - G. in Japan!
One of the record stores that I frequent came up with a great idea. In addition to the sticker on the outer plastic sleeve, they use a form of "grease pencil" and write the price of the record on the deadwax of the vinyl. It very easily wipes off without a trace- no smudge, smear, nothing. The person at the register can take the record out and compare the price on the deadwax with the outer sleeve price. If it's a different price or been wiped off, then they check their inventory pricing. Works like a charm.
I retired to the Phoenix area in 2012 from San Francisco leaving behind Amoeba, Rasputin, Tower, and Revolver. Then, to my great surprise I discovered The In Groove in Phoenix. The store has moved and grown, but remains friendly, helpful, fun, and provides a great selection. Shipping (a lot during COVID) is timely and always packed extremely well.
I work about a half mile from The In Groove and I wouldn’t go back there if it was the only record store in Phoenix and they were giving records away. OK, maybe if they were free, but the CVS just down the street has better atmosphere and no used mattress salesman for an owner. The best record store in Phoenix does not deal online, which I am thankful for. If I want to pick something online there are plenty of great options, but that isn’t the subject of your rant (and I say rant with respect 🫵).
Being from Minnesota with no real record store in town I was excited to go to The In Groove. Spent a fair amount of money and was given a blank stare by the owner when checking out. Enjoyed Uncle Aldo's Attic much more. Next time visiting Phoenix will go to othe places than the Groove.
Sadly here in North Devon in the UK we have only a few record shops but they are great.... By the way great video keep it up. I also love a good rant especially over record condition & prices...The title of you channel should be "Old Guy's Record Rant" Oh Great harmonies as well
Hi great fun video. You two probably don't realize how lucky you are to have all these nice record stores around. Here in France, there are much less possibilities, especially if you want to buy used records like Dr Robert (and I) does.
I think just about every record I’ve bought new for some time has been shrink wrapped or in a cellophane bag with never a price tag touching it. I have a couple from prob 20 years ago that have the sticker on the sleeve but I kinda like seeing that I got White Blood Cells at Rough Trade for 8.99 when it came out… but yeh for second hand it’s a ball ache. I just tell myself it’s about the music not the sleeve, along the line of Jello Biafra’s comment that he collects songs, not physical objects. Love that you’re doing videos about this. And cocktails too! Big fan in London here.
I knew this was going to be another Mazzy banger production as soon as I heard the ice clanking in the glass at the start of the video....nice job boys very entertaining 🍺👍🍸
Fun stuff, guys! Lots of great stores, if I ever get back to the Pacific Northwest...lived on Key Peninsula for a year during junior high, still miss it...one of these days, I'm going to figure out the name of the record store in Tacoma I used to shop at - I know exactly where it was, know what stores were around it, I can even remember the clerk's usual khaki colored clothes, but i'll be damned if I can remember the name of the place...it's making me nuts...they treated 12 year old me well! 🙂
This is one of my biggest gripes as well...especially huge stickers! I have bought in the past from Everyday Music when they had the Broadway area store and those stickers were hell to get off let alone without messing up the covers. But on the 45's they would put them on the labels...early/mid 50s Decca label are guaranteed junk labels. I have bought and sold at High Voltage...great store and layout...not a single complaint whatsoever. I haven't yet been to Portland for records but have heard a ton and am itching to go south. I am in the south sound area and love my local store..Rainy Day in Olympia...definite must see..fair prices, stock rotates often...do check them out. I love easy Street in W Seattle too...haven't tried the food but love the vinyl:-) Jive Time is also great as you noted. Price stickers can USUALLY be removed without tearing the labels or sleeves although most take some of the shine/finish off of them but not easily seen unless you look really close...time consuming though🙂 A great video and thanks for doing it🙂
this was a friggin' great video...i got some much-needed laughs.....and you guys are right...so many used stores don't know what they're selling and don't care about their merchandise...the plastic on the outside is such an easy concept (but i will admit...i hate that plastic crap on the inside...i'd rather have the original sleeve no matter what the condition....especially the older ones that were more than just there to hold the record in)....anyway...thanks for this trip....hope you both are well...peace...rocky
We’re looking to take a vacation and after this I’m sure it will be Seattle don’t tell my wife Lol. Enjoyed every moment of this and those stickers. I go to the Salvation Army and they started using this big sticker that rips the cover right off. I was going to purchase a record and the clerk was adamant about the sticker as I told her not to. She put the sticker on went to remove it huge piece of the cover came off with it. Anyway went on Amazon and purchased 50.00 worth of Avery removable stickers for them. Thank You
At Aux 33 Tours in Montréal they have the perfect stickers.A big square sticker with all the informations that you need to know that is easily removable if on the jacket.Normally they are one the outer sleeve but sometimes there is no sleeve so it’s on the album. For me they are the reference on pricing lp’s.
my main man out in the West Coast just wanted to let you know that there was a stack of those catalogs on the counter of a tower here in Philly back in the 90s the cashier said to take what I want and I took a stack of them I got them somewhere stashed wrapped up tight I haven't seen them in 12 years so don't know quite where they're at in the house yeah I love those catalogs I keep one on hand up here in the living room all the time..... somehow I knew 25 years ago that they would probably be highly collectable in the future for now I am holding on to them
Back in the day one of my most frequented local stores put them on the label as well as the cover. They always left a stain when removed. These included the $2.00 and up records. Thankfully they no longer do this.
Unfortunately that’s too true. I use to have a booth at an Antique Mall and I’d find my $10 stickers on $2 records. So I knew they’d been switched out. If you put it on the outer sleeve they’d switch that too. At the Mall I was in, there were over 300 booths, so you can’t expect the cashier to check that the record and sticker match. A real record store there’s no excuse for stickers on the cover. When I was in London, all stores just had sleeves out and the vinyl was behind the counter. You bring the sleeve up, they give you the vinyl to check over and see if you want it.
Norman, I have to express my great pleasure for the use of quality alcohol during the creative conversation about our dear records :) I can only recommend the addition of Sweet Mary Jane as part of the widening of the viewing angle :)))
Just visited a couple of small records stores in SF that didn't have prices on boxes of "new arrivals".When asked the price the person said,"they had to check the computer" Then they came back to me with a ridiculous price. After 50 years of collecting this is bizarre!
Yes! Great video Mazzy😁 Could be a whole new segment for series of videos! Drinking with Mazzy! Will totally open up all new interesting conversations. I know some guys to do a podcast with a similar concept. It’s been a hit it for years. 😂🥃 F the haters what do they know about good talk art? 😁
l used to have a 99.9 percent success rate removing price stickers, but the last year or so it's dipped down to 98.1... l thought l might be losing my touch but after hearing you guys talk about it l'm convinced it's a dip in sticker paper quality... ;)
I have somewhat mixed feelings about Amoeba, but I almost always find something there that makes the trip worth it. What I think is worse than any price sticker is a certain store in my part of the world that doesn't bother pricing the records at all. You just have to bring the records up to the counter and they either pull a price out of their ass or, more often, consult Discogs to see how much they can get away with. Any time I ask a price at a record store and they pull out an iPhone, I just want to walk out the door.
@@mazzysmusic Indeed. Oh, and I forgot to mention the times you carefully remove a sticker from a record only to find it has been strategically placed to conceal cover damage from a previous sticker.
Oh man I wish I had mentioned that! That is double jeopardy for sure! Deserves its own circle in hell! Btw do you live in Las Vegas? I may know the store you’re referencing
You mention Amoeba and now am wondering if you are Bay Area and the record store that you mention pricing at checkout is The Record Man in Redwood City.
@@nicholasdoheny8702 Yep, that's the one. I had to visit the medical center down there several times last fall, so I did stop in at Record Man and picked up a couple items I'd been looking for. But I felt dirty afterwards.
I'm not sure what my local brick and mortar use but the price stickers come off very easily. The only ones I haven't removed are from the records I bought in Germany in the 80s, they are in DM (Deutsche Marks)
Often, if you get it off soon, it's a lot easier than it is a year later. But it's not good - would they put it on the best, least obtrusive spot? No. Should remove easily or not be there.
That was entertaining! Besides wanting to come there to visit the stores you mentioned, I really want to know what was in the cocktails! Cheers from Canada!
Price stickers was the first thing that came to mind. That one in Seattle at Pike Place is the most overpriced record store I've ever set foot in by a mile. I walked out of there laughing it was so bad. Nice video. Cool to see Doctor Robert. Cheapo!! Used to be great for used vinyl...especially when used vinyl wasn't that big of a thing in the mid-90s. Had a store in St. Paul that was vinyl only. Fetus rules.
@@mazzysmusic I didn't mean anything detrimental about it. It was fun watching and listening to you guys. It's tough to find good record shops where I'm at. It's not like when I was a teenager when every mall or strip plaza had a record shop so I'm a bit envious you can even name that many shops near you. Keep up the great videos.
You two have great rapport and neither of you talk over the other. If this was in fact a RANT, it was fairly subdued. The Kenny G reference was really funny too. I wish Record Store Owners would have some sense
My son has lived in Portland for about 8 years and we visit frequently. First, the new store in Sellwood that Dr. Robert misidentified is called The Record Pub. Nice guys, small store, both new and used, fair prices. My favorite stores in Portland: Tomorrow Records, Dig Vinyl (also in Sellwood), Jackpot Records (they also are a label) and you have to love Music Millennium, who have been around for about 50 years. If I lived in Portland (working on it), I would buy my new vinyl at Music Millennium. Of course, Everyday Music is also great for new records. I have yet to visit Too Many Records, hope to do that next time we are in town. Lastly, another good store you did not mention is 2nd Ave Records. Parking is a challenge and the place is a bit crowded and sort of a mess, but they have great new and used and excellent prices. Once we move up, we will road trip to Seattle and hit the stores up there.
I use the small, 3/4" round Avery (removable) stickers, printed on my Laser printer, for price stickers on my records. Yes, they can leave a mark, or even damage the covers if they've been on for months or years. That said, if it's a premium record ($20 or more), I use a small Post-it Note, hand written. Yes, people swap stickers and it's even easier if the sticker is only on the outer sleeve. Paranoia? It's called losing money to thieves, and it happens, all too often. I try to look at everything I'm ringing up at the counter, but sometimes I'm busy and I worry something might slip by. I've heard/read people say "why don't you computerize your inventory and print barcode stickers?". Give me a break. Like I have time for that shit.
Hahaha to this day, I’d say 75% of the used records I bought at Half Priced Books stick to the outer sleeve in one spot from where the sticker was removed, but the adhesive remained.
Yep two of my fave records are BIA and COTC. I do agree those are the two Supertramp albums that matter. Although, for me, they are both essential RnR albums! Fun show!
To address the issue, the good practice I've seen is marking the price inside the outer sleeve with pencil. It's not 100% foolproof, but it's universal and works. Yet, I understand why record sellers stick to the stickers. It's more visible. As an honest customer - it would seem that throughout the years, record stores have been working on a sort of social agreement - you don't shit in your nest, this is a place to buy stuff but to hang out and talk about music. So tampering with prices is a big no-no, especially today. Ofc, I guess, the shop owners know their prices and know their customers who is up to something. And if you fuck up big time, you eventually close your doors not only here, but in other places to. We have to be honest customers and honest sellers in this vinyl community. It's a two-edged sword.
My biggest beef with some records stores are bins that are packed so tightly you can't browse through them. Not even worth the effort. Also, bins that are not alpha organized.
There ‘s a great store here on the East coast with a massive inventory but you can only see the titles by the spines! It ‘s getting to be hard work for me especially with my aging eyes and bi-focals!
@Mazzy is right… the markup on new titles is not ideal. The issue, of course, is the dwindling supply of used (and not trashed) records. Also, the cash outlay on new titles can be steep. But more and more here in NYC the stores that used to trade almost exclusively in used titles have slowly added new inventory to their bins. I think it's probably inevitable.
Congratulations, Mazzy and Doctor Robert. This is the best rant-a-thon in ages!
🍸✌ Cheers.
Well Thank you

We need one of those record stores with a coffee shop in my area.
America's Favourite New Comedy Duo.
the amoeba tape jobs are criminal-- almost as bad as putting ice in a single malt whisky😜
🥃🍼
l've never had a problem with amoeba's tape jobs... when l ask someone to open it for me they're always cool...
@@juliusjabbar1011 yeah but opening the packaging at home has always been a pain in the ass
@@diamond_marimba next time we go l'll show you my amoeba sleeve cutting technique. you bring the scissors....
I always take scotch with a bit of ice. Just saying....
✌🏼 you need to get in with us on a rant video sometime. Let off some steam. 😵💫😏
How many refreshments did you guys have? Loved it. :)
One. And we hadn’t even finished it
@@mazzysmusic I didn't mean anything detrimental about it.
You would think by now !!
Two Grumpy Old Fart Collectors Half in the Bag THE Pride of the Vinyl Community
A large Scotch and records is the perfect combo. You guys are really spoilt for stores. - Love from London
yes ..I love rant videos by Norman
Youre on the right track. Hope you migrate to Portland and enjoy the record collector community here!
this is my number one rant.
!!! 1960 something Island Records sampler nice enough to eat,the sticker pulled of a bit of the cover, but a bloody brilliant sample album
I put my price tags in my booth on the inside of the record cover right there when you open it up
I like the idea you are saying about vinyl records
Hahaha to this day, I’d say 75% of the used records I bought at Half Priced Books stick to the outer sleeve in one spot from where the sticker was removed, but the adhesive remained.
The Show on Cable T.V. Drunken History, You Guys should do a Show called Drunken Vinyl History!
More of this
I’ve had success removing most price tags by using a hairdryer for a few seconds to heat the glue on the sticker
When do we get the Scotch & Soda tutorial?
Scotch needs to be a prerequisite for all future videos
Princeton Record Exchange is guilty of using the worst price stickers! I’ve peeled off pieces of cover art trying to remove them. 😡
Been there, done that
Loving this video, makes me want to open a bottle and join in lol
Chapstick gets rid of goo. Love the channel!
This made me think of The Turtles video talking about their managers.
I agree about those sealed used records at Ameoba. Ugh.
God! You guys are cracking me up!!
How many scotches did you have before you started this wonderful rant/gospel meeting?
Only this one 🥃
Yep two of my fave records are BIA and COTC. I do agree those are the two Supertramp albums that matter. Although, for me, they are both essential RnR albums! Fun show!
Louis and the Good Book , have it on cassette.
Maybe that will be a future rant. I agree !!!
There ‘s a great store here on the East coast with a massive inventory but you can only see the titles by the spines! It ‘s getting to be hard work for me especially with my aging eyes and bi-focals!
Agree on both counts!
Nothing better than Scotch, records and rants
@Mazzy is right… the markup on new titles is not ideal. The issue, of course, is the dwindling supply of used (and not trashed) records. Also, the cash outlay on new titles can be steep. But more and more here in NYC the stores that used to trade almost exclusively in used titles have slowly added new inventory to their bins. I think it's probably inevitable.
Tomorrow’s records is fantastic
Agreed! Place price sticker on the plastic sleeve and not LP cover or inside of cover.
What do mean , plastic sleeve?
Happens here to,im in the UK and my local used dealer sticks those hard ass un removable price tags on the album cover, drives me insane
I would not shop there, collect a load and dump on the counter, say that's what I'm not buying
I agree with you 100%.. It is so annoying with these stickers that don't come off.
in Portland you need to go to 2nd Avenue records. been there for years
Nice people run it but more new than great used vinyl stock. Its a historic and worthy store for sure
Mazzy did your exodus uhqr come yet? I was super lucky to get it on Friday even though I'm in CT. It sounds fantastic!
Great Video Mazzy, your friend is as good a ranter as you are! lol
Thanks 😁 ranting is very lethargic.
